Electrostatic imaging apparatus comprises a plurality of electrostatic radiators and a signal generator for driving the radiators to produce an electrostatic field having characteristics modifiable by the presence of an object within the field. The field characteristics are detected and processed to produce output signals representative of a surface profile of the object.

Apparatus for electrostatically imaging the surface of an object located

Apparatus is disclosed for detecting irregularities or flaws in seams such as the seams of cans. The apparatus includes means for irradiating the surface of the seam to produce reflected radiation signals, a plurality of radiation sensors, each having a selected field of view of the surface, and each producing sensor output signals dependent on reflected radiation signals received within such field of view. A signal processing means receives sensor output signals for a succession of fields of view along the longitudinal length of the seam and derives therefrom signal data representing a dimensional feature of the seam. Signl comparison means compares such derived data with signal data representing an acceptable dimensional limit and produces a rejection signal in the event that the dimensional feature does not fall within the limit. Means for classifying the nature of an irregularity is also disclosed, as is transport means for the movement of seams though the field of view of the sensors.

Apparatus for inspecting can seams and the like

An electro-optical displacement sensor comprises an optical source including a plurality of optical grating lines for producing from an incident optical signal a transmitted optical signal having a spatially periodic intensity pattern. Optical sensing means receives the transmitted signal as an input across a plurality of optical receptors, each of which receptors provides an output signal corresponding to the amplitude of the transmitted signal as sensed by the receptor. The receptors are spaced one from the other by a distance different from the fundamental spatial wavelength of the transmitted signal. Signal conditioning means derive a signal vector from the receptor output signals, the signal vector than being processed to derive first and second independent component signals. The component signals are then combined to produce an interpolated phase signal corresponding to the interpolated position of the grating lines relative to the optical receptors.
