A replacement device for resurfacing a joint surface of a femur and a method of making and installing such a device is provided. The custom replacement device is designed to substantially fit the trochlear groove surface, of an individual femur, thereby creating a 'customized' replacement device for that individual femur and maintaining the original kinematics of the joint. A replacement device for resurfacing a joint surface of a femur and a method of making and installing such a device is provided. The custom replacement device is designed to substantially fit the trochlear groove surface, of an individual femur. Thereby creating a 'customized' replacement device for that individual femur and maintaining the original kinematics of the joint. The replacement device may be defined by four boundary points, and a first and a second surface. The first of four points is 3 to 5 mm from the point of attachment of the anterior cruciate ligament to the femur. The second point is near the bottom edge of the end of the natural articulatar cartilage. The third point is at the top ridge of the right condyle and the fourth point at the top ridge of the left condyle of the femur. The top surface is designed so as to maintain centrally directed tracking of the patella perpendicular to the plane established by the distal end of the femoral condyles and aligned with the center of the femoral head.

The invention includes a method of determining a surgical patient's pelvic position and inputting that position into a computer via a tracking system, suitable for use in navigating partial or total hip replacement surgery. The patient is first aligned with anatomical reference points in relation to corresponding locating features on a patient positioner. The positions of index features on the patient positioner are then acquired via a tracking system. Based on the positions of the index features and their known relationship to the locating features, the locations of the anatomical reference features are calculated and a pelvic plane is defined therefrom. The invention also includes a surgical tool for mounting a trackable target to a human bone, suitable for fixation to a human femur. This tool includes a removable bone clamp and a releasable coupling member, integrated with said removable bone clamp.

A surgical tool for mounting a trackable target to a human bone, suitable for fixation to a human femur. The tool includes a removable bone clamp and a releasable coupling member which is integrated with the removable bone clamp. The releasable coupling member is arranged to mate with a compatible coupling member mounted on the trackable target to establish a predetermined spatial relationship between the bone clamp and trackable target. The releasable and compatible coupling members form a releasable connection which is mechanically constrained to re-engage only in a re-engaged position that accurately recaptures the predetermined spatial relationship.

The use of implantable bulking materials for the treatment of urinary incontinence and a system for accurate positioning and delivery of bulking materials are described. The implantable materials are biocompatible, non-biodegradable implants which are designed for stabilization in soft tissue through the ingrowth of fibrous tissue after implantation. The positioning and delivery system comprises an injector which is adapted to allow a syringe to be attached and a housing. The housing includes a through cavity adapted to hold a viewing instrument, such as a cystoscope to allow accurate positioning of the injector. The housing also includes one or more injector through cavities, which are adapted to hold the injector at an angle to the viewing instrument. The angle between the viewing instrument and the injector is variably adjustable. The invention embraces the use of the bulking implants with various delivery methods, including the use of the described positioning and delivery system.

Implant positioning system and method

The present invention is directed to an apparatus and method of quickly and easily grasping and releasing a graft. The apparatus includes a sleeve with an opening through the axis of the sleeve. Within the opening of the sleeve is a shaft with a jaw on one end, and a threaded end on the opposite end. The sleeve has a square tip end that is adjacent to the jaw of the shaft. Furthermore, the shaft near the jaw has a square cross-section so that the shaft is substantially prevented from rotating but allowed to move axially along the opening of the sleeve. A knob is also rotatably coupled to the opening of the sleeve on the opposite end of the tip end. The knob has a protruding end which has an outer thread on the surface of the protruding end and a center thread. The outer thread of the protruding end is adapted to rotatably couple to the opening on the sleeve, and the center thread of the protruding end is adapted to rotatably couple to the threaded end of the shaft. The opening on the sleeve and the outer thread on the protruding end of the knob are threaded such that clockwise rotation of the knob extends the knob relative to the opening on the sleeve. Furthermore, the threaded end of the shaft and the center thread of the protruding end are threaded such that clockwise rotation of the knob retracts the shaft into the center thread of the protruding end. The net result is that as the knob is turned clockwise, the shaft is pulled into the opening of the sleeve at a faster rate because the knob is extending away from the sleeve and the shaft is being inserted into the protruding end of the knob at the same time. As the shaft is being retracted into the tip end of the sleeve, the tip end bears on the jaw to close the jaw quickly and conversely opens quickly as the shaft protracts from the tip end.

Inserter assembly

The metal shell of an acetabular cup has holes that allow a surgeon to screw the shell to pelvic bone. To prevent the debris of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene ('UHMWPE') or other plastic liner in the shell from migrating through the holes, the present invention seals each screw-receiving hole with a thin UHMWPE disc. The disc snaps into an annular groove in the hole. With the disc in place, debris from the liner does not pass through the screw holes.
