The invention provides a combination of target genes that are useful as genetic markers for the strain-specific detection of. The invention also provides diagnostic methods using said combination of markers.

The invention provides genes that are unique either tostrain Gardel or tostrain Welgevonden, or allelic couples which are present in both strains but whose sequences differ between the two strains, as genetic markers to differentiate between these two strains. The invention also provides diagnostic methods using these genetic markers.

Three gene clusters that together encode albicidin biosynthesis, the complete gene DNA sequences, and the deduced protein sequences for the enzymes and methods for using the DNA sequences are disclosed and discussed as well as methods for plant protection and creating new antibiotics. The novel Albicidin family of antibiotics is disclosed and their structure deduced.
