In a communications system containing signal enhancement circuitry capable of selectively enhancing portions of a plurality of signals carried on a corresponding plurality of channels through the signal enhancement circuitry, a system and method for controlling enhancement on a per call basis. The system includes: (1) command generation circuitry for generating an enhancement command for transmission to the signal enhancement circuitry and (2) command reception circuitry, associated with the signal enhancement circuitry, for receiving the enhancement command from the command generation circuitry and selectively enhancing the portion of the signals on the per call basis according to the enhancement command.

To facilitate the processing of an incoming telephone call associated with a respective telecommunications network service an initial address message identifying the incoming call is intercepted before the message is presented to an associated toll switch that will process the call. The intercepted message is then examined in order to identify the toll switch service logic that will process the call. The resulting identity is then appended to the message and that result is then passed to the toll switch so that the identified service logic may be invoked to process the call in accord with the requested service.

Method and apparatus are disclosed for establishing a wideband communication facility from a plurality of narrow bandwidth channels through a switched communications network from a first to a second terminal in response to a call from the first terminal indicating a customer-selected bandwidth for the wideband facility. Apparatus is also disclosed for establishing a wideband communication path through an illustrative switching system interconnecting groups of narrowband time division multiplexed channels established for the wideband facility. The path has a bandwidth greater than any of the TDM channels. Additional buffer memories and memory control arrangements are added to the initial and final stages of a time-space-time switching network to prevent any of the time slot data of a given time frame from being delayed and included in another time frame.

Method of and apparatus for establishing a wideband communication

A method and apparatus for setting up a telecommunications call from a calling customer (caller) terminal to one of a plurality of call destinations through an interconnection network. The caller dials an 800 number. This number is identified in a first data base as indicating a plurality of possible services, each of which is associated with one or more call destinations. A second data base provides the identification of a switch for generating an announcement to the customer and for the identification of an announcement in that switch. The call is connected to that announcement and an automatic speech and tone recognition unit, and the announcement prompts the caller to speak a command or key a dual tone multifrequency (DTMF) signal in order to select one of the possible destinations. Based on the number dialed by the caller, the Numbering Plan Area (NPA) code of the caller plus the command keyed or spoken by the caller and recognized by the recognition unit, one of a plurality of POTS (plain old telephone service) telephone numbers is selected by the second data base and the call is routed to a destination identified by that POTS telephone number. Advantageously, such an arrangement permits a business to use a single directory number for serving a plurality of services of the business, to select among these services on the basis of a command spoken or a DTMF signal keyed by a caller in response to an announcement of that business, and permits the business to receive the call at an appropriate destination for processing that call.

Automatic speech recognition to select among call destinations

A wideband communication facility is established via a switched network between calling and called terminals. The wideband facility comprises a number of segments, each segment including a plurality of narrowband time division multiplex channels having a total bandwidth at least equal to the bandwidth of the wideband facility. A switching system of the network interconnects the wideband facility segments and assembles all the data received in a given time frame from one segment into the single time frame for transmission to another facility segment. Additional buffer memories are added to the initial and final stages of a time-space-time switching network to insure that all the data received in one time frame from a given facility segment is assembled only into the same time farme for transmission on an outgoing facility segment.

A method allowing a customer to define its telephone service within flexible boundaries for calls directed to the customer. Within constraints imposed by the selected embodiment, the method reduces software development traditionally associated with the provision of new services. A plurality of independent call processing capabilities, such as announcement, digit collection, billing, etc., are provided at a switching office. A program defined by a customer is executed in response to each call to the customer. The program makes decisions based on the parameters of the call, such as time, ANI, information digits requested and received from the caller, etc., and links together the appropriate ones of the capabilities in the proper order to dispose of the call based on the call parameters as specified in the program. A customer service may be modified by changing the customer program.

Method for customer definable telephone capability

A method of controlling a telephone office serving a call to obtain a call processing capability not available at the office. A data base executes a customer program unique to a customer in response to each call to the customer. The customer program determines from call parameters how to process a particular call and instructs the serving office to perform specific primitive call processing capabilities to process the call. If the serving office is unable to perform a capability required to process the call in accordance with the customed program, the date base selects a second office which should be able to perform the capability. The call is routed from the first office to the second office under control of the data base and the second office performs one or more call processing capabilities under control of the data base. Call processing may be returned to the first office under control of the data base after a capability is performed at the second office. This is referred to as a service assist. On the other hand, call processing may be turned over completely to the second office, in which case it is referred to as a service handoff.
