A subcutaneous radiation reflection probe for measuring oxygen saturation in living tissue includes an elongate drive shaft on one end of which is detachably coupled a mounting cup. The mounting cup includes a hollow for receiving and holding a base element on which is mounted a spiral needle which coils outwardly from the mounting cup to terminate in a pointed end. A window is formed in the spiral needle near the pointed end thereof for receiving and holding a radiation emitter, such as a light emitting diode. A radiation detector is disposed on the base element within the coil of the spiral needle. The probe may be used to measure oxygen saturation in living tissue, such as a fetal scalp, by inserting the mounting cup and drive shaft through an introducer into a woman's vagina until the spiral needle contacts the fetal scalp. The drive shaft may then be rotated so that the spiral needle rotates into the scalp, after which energizing pulses are applied to the radiation emitter to cause it to emit radiation and illuminate the fetal scalp tissue into which the needle is inserted. The radiation detector detects a portion of this radiation, depending upon the oxygen saturation of the tissue, and develops a signal to thus provide a measure of the oxygen saturation.

Subcutaneous radiation reflection probe

A system for intrauterine detection of one or more biological substances, such as meconium or blood, is described. The presence in amniotic fluid of such biological substances indicates an abnormal condition which justifies intervention on the part of a medical practitioner supervising the labor and delivery. A flexible cable which can be inserted into the uterus is provided which includes at least two lumens. The first lumen is used to draw amniotic fluid through the lumen into an observation chamber outside of the uterus and at the an end of the first lumen. The fluid is visually observed by a medical practitioner for the presence of a biological substance or the biological substance can be detected by any one several described instruments. It is preferred that if an instrument is used to detect the biological substance that a transparent visual observation chamber also be included so allow visual detection also. The apparatus allows stained fluid to be withdrawn from, and clean fluid to be infused into, the uterus in order to reduce the concentration of, and the effect of, the undesirable biological substance in the uterus.

Intrauterine meconium detection system

A hand-held gynecologic instrument for use in manipulating a uterus comprises an elongate body and a handle with a contour. An actuating lever used to control uterine movement is operable by the same hand that grips the handle. A uterus manipulation member pivotally connected to the elongate body comprises a tube formed with a shallow curve and fitted with an elastomeric tip and an irrigation conduit. The tube is releasably connected to a pivot block which has a tapered bore. A tapered bushing which mates with the bore is disposed about the tube. The tube and bushing are releasably secured by a nut to permit alteration of the effective length and rotational position of the tube to accommodate different uteruses. The pivot block is pivotally connected to the elongate body and to one end of a rod. The rod's other end is pivotally connected to the actuating lever to translate movement of the actuating lever into pivotal movement of the pivot block and hence into rotation of the tube about the anteverting axis. A membrane disposed about the tube is inflatable to exert resilient pressure for retaining the instrument in place without a tenaculum. A lever lock for locking the actuating lever comprises a biased member which has a prong for engaging teeth on the actuating lever. An adjacent cam member which includes a thumb-operable extension is used in moving the prong in and out of engagement with the teeth.

Uterine manipulator

A composition for determining pH of a solution comprises a fluorescent carbazine dye covalently bound to a solid support. A method of determining pH of a solution comprises placing the composition in the solution, contacting the composition with a selected wavelength of light to excite fluorescence by the carbazine dye, measuring intensities of the fluorescence at two selected wavelengths, calculating a ratio of fluorescence intensities at the two selected wavelengths, and correlating the ratio with a predetermined relationship of such ratios to pH. A fiber optic system for measuring pH of a solution with the carbazine-dye-containing composition is also disclosed.

Carbazine dyes and derivatives for pH measurement

A novel two part lancing device comprising a multiple compartment housing for lancets and a carrier. The compartments are joined in a common multiple lancet housing for improved handling and distribution. The housing consists of two end compartments and at least two serially linked, frangibly separable, disposable lancet compartments which comprise presterilized, self-actuating lancets. When fired, each lancet, driven by a precocked torsion spring, executes one reciprocal cycle wherein the lancet tip is driven outward a precise distance to lance a patients finger or the like and is then fully retracted into the housing compartment. The spent lancet can be frangibly separated from the housing to provide access to the next-to-be-used lancet which remains aseptically pure until the moment of separation of the spent lancet. Because the used lancet tip is fully retracted into the housing, the separated lancet compartment can be safely discarded without special handling. The carrier is a handler for the lancet housing and provides a convenient tool of constant length and 'feel' for positioning and firing the lancets.

An assay employing a tracer comprising a ligand having a mercury label wherein mercury label is released from at least one of a bound or free tracer phase and interacts with a metal. Analyte is determined by a change in at least one property of the metal caused by such interaction. The invention also relates to a device for such an assay wherein mercury ions released from a free or bound tracer are caused to eventually amalgamate with a metal, and the presence and/or amount of analyte is determined by changes in the metal resulting from the eventual amalgamation which may be measured electrically or by other means. The invention also relates to novel assay instruments, novel lancets, assay sensors, assay sensor packets, instrumentation and combinations of assay components, and related methods.

An assay employing a tracer comprising a ligand having a mercury label wherein mercury label is released from at least one of a bound or free tracer phase and iunteracts with a metal. Analyte is determined by a change in at least one property of the metal caused by such interaction. The invention also relates to a device for such an assay wherein mercury ions released from a free or bound tracer are caused to eventually amalgamate with a metal, and the presence and/or amount of analyte is determined by changes in the metal resulting from the eventual amalgamation which may be measured electrically or by other means. The invention also relates to novel assay instruments, novel lancets, assay sensors, assay sensor packets, instrumentation and combinations of assay components, and related methods.

An air bubble sensor device comprises a sensor block and a recess in the block for receiving a hollow tube through which liquid flows. The tube has an interior surface and an exterior surface. A light source is arranged in the block to direct light at the tube when placed in the recess. This arrangement permits light rays to strike the interior surface at an angle with respect to the normal of the interior surface. A light detector is arranged in the block to receive a light reflected at the interior surface when an air bubble is present in the tube. The light detector is positioned to receive substantially no light refracted at the interior surface when liquid is present in the tube. A mechanism is provided for taking the light received by the detector to produce a signal for indicating the presence of an air bubble in the tube. A method for detecting the presence of an air bubble in liquid is also within the purview of the present invention.

A detector assembly for use with an analyzer instrument comprises a light source for providing a light beam for analyzing one or more substances in a sample. A detector is included for detecting light associated with the sample under analysis. An analysis station permits the light beam to enter the sample and shields the sample from extraneous light. The analysis station further permits light to pass from the sample to the light detector. A plurality of filters is selectively positionable in the light beam between the light source and the sample. These filters permit different wavelengths of light to pass therethrough so that selective light analysis of the sample may be performed.

Detector assembly for analyzer instrument

A self-contained reagent package device for an assay comprises a support member and a plurality of wells in the support member. All of the wells are capable of retaining liquids therein. At least one of the wells has an aperture at its bottom end for the passage of liquids therethrough. The one well includes a carrier to which a reagent is bound and further includes a porous filter positioned between the carrier and the aperture which is capable of retaining liquids used in the assay under normal atmospheric pressure conditions. The filter permits the passage of those liquids, including unbound and soluble substances, at increased pressure within the one well. Further, the filter is capable of retaining the carrier and substances bound thereto. At least one of the wells includes a predetermined amount of reagent therein. Another of the wells is empty so that the specimen to be assayed may be deposited therein. A removable protective cover is sealed over the open ends of the wells to maintain the incorporated reagents in stable form prior to use. A method for the performance of an assay using the above-described device is another aspect of the present invention.

Self-contained reagent package device and an assay using same

A self-contained reagent package device for an assay comprises a support member and a plurality of wells in the support member. All of the wells are capable of retaining liquids therein. One of the wells has on its interior surfaces an immunoreactive substance for carrying out the assay. At least one of the wells includes a predetermined amount of reagent therein. Another of the wells is empty so that the specimen to be assayed may be deposited therein. A protective cover is sealed over the open ends of the wells to maintain the incorporated reagents in stable form prior to use. The cover preferably does not seal the open end of one of the wells which serves as a specimen collecting well.
