Copy production machine having a print mode for making copies under automatic control interruptible by a copy mode of making copies. In the print mode images to be copied are automatically supplied to a copy production portion. In the copy mode, a variety of image supplying techniques may be employed. Copy output means separate copies made from the two modes. In the print mode images are preferably precollated whereas in the copy, mode produced copies are collated. In a print mode plural image sources may be employed, such sources being activated ad seriatim.

Copy production machines

A store and forward unit having an output print station with convenience copying capabilities has connections to diverse text signal sources and destinations. Such diverse sources and destinations may have established textual format and control characters not necessarily shared with other sources and destinations. The store and forward unit, upon receiving a set of text signals, examines the text control characters. Based upon such examination, the store and forward unit processes such text without changing the control characters provided that all destinations connected to such unit can use such control characters. If, on the other hand, the destinations cannot use such control character, the unit adds sufficient control characters for allowing the received text as modified by the additional characters to be transmitted without text processing analysis to any of the connected destinations. If desired, the control characters not usable or not recognized by a receiving destination can be deleted prior to transmission to such destination. Accordingly, when received text is to be retransmitted to a plurality of diverse destinations, the store and forward unit text processes the received text signals but once and supplies the text processed signals to the diverse destinations with only deletions of control characters.

Job recovery method and system for generating complete sets of copies and providing billing information with respect thereto. Job recovery is automatically effected after a jam occurs with respect to copy sheets by maintaining counts of sheets reaching the exit pocket and retained in the duplex tray for determining therefrom images lost due to the jam and responsive thereto generating replacement copies. Counts are also maintained for determining when copying of each set is complete and for billing purposes with the count for billing purposes reflecting only delivered copies with no additions being made for replacement copies generated due to lost images. For effecting job recovery due to jams occurring during imaging of duplex copies, replacement sheets are generated immediately after each jam to replace those sheets lost due to the jam by determining the number of pages to be printed, dividing this number by two, and subtracting therefrom the count of sheets in the duplex tray and in the exit pocket, with this determination being then used to control generation of first side images on sheets needed for replacement purposes with said sheets being then conveyed to the duplex tray so that the resulting duplex copy generation is complete when reaching the exit pocket.

The first set of each print job is printed one sheet at a time ad seriatum; in subsequent sets all first sides are printed, then all second sides. The first set printing is interleaved with image signal reception and in all subsequent sets, all image signals for the sets or production portion of a set have been received.
