A magnet scanning device uses a helical scanning technique to scan a cylindrical magnet along a helical path on a cylindrical surface that corresponds to the cylindrical magnet. Based on the magnetic field profile, the device may detect any unacceptable irregularities in the magnetic field and identify a location of the cylindrical magnet associated with the irregularity.

Aspects of this disclosure describe a multi-pass printer having a photoreceptor device mounted on an axis, a developer that is arranged adjacent to the photoreceptor device and is movable between a first position and a second position, and a camming mechanism mounted on the axis that acts upon the developer to urge the developer between the first and second positions. The camming mechanism can further include a camming disc that is mounted to rotate about the axis. The camming disc can also have an outer periphery edge having a first portion defined by a first radius and a second portion defined by a second radius. The camming mechanism can also have a developer roll spacing cam having an effective radius that maintains a spacing between the developer and the photoreceptor device.

Camming method and apparatus for controlling color developers for non-contact development

A xerographic printing system and method of printing that includes two photoreceptor drums, each configured to enable printing with a different type of toner, a first pathway that connects the two photoreceptor drums, a second pathway that bypasses either of the photoreceptor drums, and an intermediate transfer belt, configured for either a one or two pass architecture, for transferring an image created by the toner to print media. This system and method of printing is specially adapted to enable efficient use of different combinations of toners within one printing system. In one embodiment, this system is able to limit use of a special toner to situations where one photoreceptor drum is not in bypass mode, thus conserving the more expensive special toner.

In a xerographic development apparatus using a magnetic brush formed from magnetic carrier particles, a magnetic strip disposed downstream of the development zone along the direction of motion of the photoreceptor retains a separate, small brush of carrier particles near the photoreceptor. The brush acts as a barrier separating a flow of 'dirty' air (laden with airborne toner particles) upstream of the strip, and a flow of clean air downstream of the strip.

A printing apparatus includes a guide member for directing sheets toward a transfer zone. The guide member defines a set of ribs which hold the sheets above the main surface of the guide member. Thus, any stray marking material which lands on the guide member is relatively unlikely to contact a sheet moving over the guide member.

An apparatus and method are described for extending the life of a photoreceptor in xerographic printing. At a predetermined point in the life span of a photoreceptor, a correction circuit is interposed between the power supply and the charging device of the printer. Correction circuits of different designs can be selected to compensate for the photoreceptor properties at different stages of its useful life. The different correction circuits can be automatically activated over time, or can be retrofitted into a replaceable module when the replaceable module is remanufactured.

A photoreceptor assembly and a xerographic cassette for a printing or copying machine, the cassette including a photoreceptor drum, a drum cleaner, a waste toner container, for storing waste toner; and a waste toner conveyor for conveying waste toner cleaned off said photoreceptor drum by the cleaner into the waste toner container characterized in that the waste toner container is positioned in the interior of the photoreceptor drum and is reversibly removable therefrom. The conveyor typically includes a flexible helical wire which acts as an auger. Once filled with waste toner, the waste toner container is removed from the drum and is replaced by a fresh container.

An electrostatographic printer has a process unit adapted to be removably mounted in a main assembly of an electrostatographic reproducing machine, the process unit including a developement apparatus at which an electrostatic latent image is developed on an imaging member, and a transfer device which causes a developed toner image to be transferred from the moving imaging member to a copy sheet. The development apparatus is contained within a housing of an electrically insulating material, and comprises conductive means adjacent the exit portion of the development apparatus, i.e. the portion from which the imaging member emerges as it moves towards the transfer device. The conductive means includes a conductive coating on the exit portion of the developer housing, and a conductive seal member through which an electrical discharge path is provided. This reduces the tendency of debris to accumulate in the region of the exit portion, and prevents any debris which does accumulate from building up a charge (which would have detrimental effects on the developed image).

Electrostatographic machine

A sealing arrangement for a container in which an auger having vanes is disposed in the chamber thereof for moving particulate material stored therein. A threaded sealing member is adapted to engage the auger vanes so as to be driven along the container on rotation of the auger. The sealing member is mounted slidingly within the container but is restrained from rotating about the auger. On rotating the auger, in one direction, the sealing member moves along the auger to a storage position located beyond the auger vanes.

A cylindrical magnet for a magnetic brush developer unit used in an electrophotographic printing machine is of U-shaped cross section having a cylindrical outer surface, and a cavity through which extends the rotary axis of the sleeve. The material forming the magnet is a moldable plastic containing a comminuted ferrite. The longitudinal, angularly spaced, poles are produced in the material during the molding operation. The magnetic body is bonded to end support members, and it is self-supporting between them.

An apparatus in which flowing developer material is mixed. A plurality of spaced vanes project outwardly from a dividing plate to define a plurality of sets of chambers arranged in substantially parallel rows. Each chamber is arranged to receive developer material at an entrance aperture and to release the developer material from an exit aperture with the exit aperture being displaced from a position vertically below its entrance aperture. Each row has an alternate series of chambers with their exit apertures spaced respectively to the left and right of the position vertically below their entrance apertures. The entrance apertures and exit apertures of the chambers of different rows are aligned so that on successive recirculations of the developer material, the developer material moves simultaneously from left to right and from row to row, and from right to left and from row to row.

Mixing device for particulate material

A scanning optical system for a photocopier is mounted on a reciprocating carriage which travels between a start-of-scan and end-of-scan position. The carriage is engaged and driven by a drive transmission member which, in a preferred embodiment, is an endless belt having detents spaced along its length. The belt simultaneously drives the support for a photosensitive surface.
