A wireless data communication system simultaneously transmits data signals from more than one antenna with a deterministic, time-dependent phase difference between the signals. In one example, more than one antenna transmits the same data signal with a phase difference between the transmitted signals. In another example multiple users' data signals are simultaneously transmitted using a corresponding plurality of beams that each use at least two transmitting antennas. Transmissions to multiple users on a shared packet data channel can be scheduled at the same time. In one example, the phase difference is periodic and the beams are orthogonal to maximize system throughput even when one or more users is stationary or slowly moving.

Multiple antenna transmissions with deterministic phase differences

Described herein is a method and apparatus for transmission that provides the performance of space time spreading (STS) or orthogonal transmit diversity (OTD) and the backwards compatibility of phase sweep transmit diversity (PSTD) without significantly degrading performance in additive white guassan noise (AWGN) conditions using a transmission architecture that incorporates STS/OTD and a form of phase sweep transmit diversity (PSTD) referred to herein as biased PSTD, which involves transmitting a signal and a frequency swept version of the same signal over diversity antennas at different power levels to reduce the depths of nulls normally seen in AWGN conditions when regular PSTD is utilized.

Space time spreading and phase sweep transmit diversity

Disclosed is a method and apparatus of transmit diversity that is backward compatible and does not significantly degrade performance in additive white guassan noise (AWGN) conditions using a transmission architecture that incorporates a form of phase sweep transmit diversity (PSTD) referred to herein as biased PSTD. Biased PSTD involves transmitting a signal and a frequency swept version of the same signal over diversity antennas at different power levels. By transmitting the two signals at different power levels, the depths of nulls normally seen in AWGN conditions when PSTD is utilized is reduced and performance degradation in AWGN conditions is mitigated.

Biased phase sweep transmit diversity

Disclosed is a method and apparatus of transmit diversity that is backward compatible and does not degrade performance using a transmission architecture that incorporates a form of phase sweep transmit diversity (PSTD) referred to herein as split shift PSTD. Split shift PSTD involves transmitting at least two phase swept versions of a signal over diversity antennas, wherein the two phase swept versions of the signal have a different phase. The phase sweep frequency signals may have a fixed or varying phase shifting rate, may have an identical or different phase shifting rate, may be offset from each other and/or may be phase shifting in the same or opposite direction.

Split shift phase sweep transmit diversity

Described herein is a method and apparatus for transmission that provides the performance of space time spreading (STS) or orthogonal transmit diversity (OTD) and the backwards compatibility of phase sweep transmit diversity (PSTD) without degrading performance of either STS or PSTD using a symmetric sweep PSTD transmission architecture. In one embodiment, a pair of signals sand sare split into signals s(a) and s(b) and signals s(a) and s(b), respectively. Signal scomprises a first STS/OTD signal belonging to an STS/OTD pair, and signal scomprises a second STS/OTD signal belonging to the STS/OTD pair. Signals s(b) and s(b) are phase swept using a pair of phase sweep frequency signals that would cancel out any self induced interference. For example, the pair of phase sweep frequency signals utilize a same phase sweep frequency with one of the phase sweep frequency signals rotating in the opposite direction plus an offset of &#x3c0; relative to the other phase sweep frequency signal. The resultant phase swept signals s(b) and s(b) are added to signals s(a) and s(a) before being amplified and transmitted.

Symmetric sweep phase sweep transmit diversity

A timing acquisition algorithm for locating the sync timing position of a sync word embedded in a received signal for achieving synchronization between the received signal and a base station, e.g., a base station receiving the received signal, within a wireless telecommunications system. The timing acquisition algorithm is preferably a set of programmable instructions incorporated within a software package and processed by a processor at the within the wireless telecommunications system, such as at the base station. The timing acquisition algorithm gets rid of the unlikely sync timing position for each branch of an adaptive antenna array in the first step; gets rid of the unlikely sync timing position for all branches in the second step; and uses optimal diversity combining for the remaining timing position and uses the conventional correlation or mean-square-error (MSE) approach on the combined data in the third step to finally locate the timing position of the sync word. The first two steps limit the computational load of the third step to a reasonable level. For example, if only two sync timing positions remain after the first two steps, then during the third step, weight calculations need only be performed twice, i.e., one for each sync timing position that still remains.

Timing acquisition algorithm for an adaptive antenna array

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for enhancing diversity gain without reducing data rate by increasing the number of antenna elements and configuring the antenna elements for improving signal-to-noise ratio at a receiver. The antenna array comprise a first antenna group with at least two antenna elements and a second antenna group with at least one antenna element. The first and second antenna groups are spaced approximately ten carrier wavelengths or more apart from each other, and the antenna elements belonging to the first antenna group are spaced approximately a half carrier wavelength or less apart from each other. A plurality of data streams is generated from a signal and used to produce a first and second plurality of representative data streams. Each of the first plurality of representative data streams is phase-shifted and encoded using different orthogonal codes.

Apparatus and method of enhancing transmit diversity

A cellular base station transmitter/receiver system is provided which combines adaptive array processing, for the uplink RF signals, and fixed beam switching, for the downlink RF signals. An example of the configuration employs at least four antenna ports, with all four ports being used to provide uplink RF signals to a receiver processor, two being used to supply narrow beam uplink signals and two being used to supply wide beam uplink signals. Two of the four ports are used to provide beam switched narrow beam downlink RF signals.

Transmitter/receiver for combined adaptive array processing and fixed beam switching

An antenna array system includes a first array for operating in a transmit mode and a receive mode and a second array spaced apart for operating in the receive mode. A receiver adjusts a receive radiation pattern in the receive mode and provides a control signal for a transmit radiation pattern of the transmit mode.

Antenna array system having coherent and noncoherent reception characteristics

A method and system for adaptive signal processing for an antenna array reduces the requisite computations for executing an adaptive algorithm that combines or digitally filters baseband receive signals. The system receives uplink electromagnetic signals from a phased array and uplink electromagnetic signals from a diversity array during the reception of a desired electromagnetic signal transmitted by a desired mobile station. The uplink signals are converted into baseband signals for digital signal processing. The baseband signals are observable as a series of successive time slots. The system determines uplink coarse combining weights associated with the uplink baseband signals of the phased array and downlink coarse combining weights associated with the downlink baseband signals of the phased array. The baseband uplink signals are summed into as few as one resultant baseband signal during or after application of the coarse combining weights to the baseband uplink signals. The system determines fine combining weights for one or more resultant baseband signals and the baseband uplink signals on a symbol-by-symbol basis, or on any durational basis less than a time slot, to combine the signals into a single enhanced baseband signal for symbol detection.

Method and system for adaptive signal processing for an antenna array

A method and apparatus are provided for stabilizing at least one element of a mechanical system against echo-like responses to mechanical disturbances. One or more error signals are provided by sensing the motion of the system at one or more points. At least one adaptive filter is operated in response to the error signal or signals, and in response to at least one non-advanced reference signal that is directly related to some motion of the system. The adaptive filter produces a corrective signal for driving a mechanical actuator, thereby to apply to the element a stabilizing generalized force. By non-advanced is meant that there is a zero or negative time-delay between the presence of a given signal at the reference-sensing location and the arrival of the same, or a similar, signal at the error-sensing location. In particular embodiments of the invention, the reference-sensing location is the same as the error-sensing location.

Apparatus and method for adaptive suppression of vibrations in

Noise reducing circuits for electronic receiving instruments, such as telephone receivers in headsets or handsets that are used in noisy locations, provide compensation of the set's receiver unit-to-error microphone transfer function to enhance the noise reduction. Further circuits provide pre-conditioning of the incoming voice signal to make the noise cancellation more effective. The tendency of these noise cancelling circuits to oscillate is substantially lessened by added circuitry which rapidly detects onset of oscillation and momentarily reduces the noise cancellation without interrupting the incoming speech path altogether.

Electronic cancellation of ambient noise in telephone headset

A radio or telephone handset configured with the usual transmitter and receiver ends and connecting handle is designed to have physical characteristics well adapted in its acoustic characteristics to complement noise cancellation circuitry. The receiver speaker is mounted in the receiver cap, and the cap is built with a domed, apertured earpiece extending from the exterior surface of said receiver cap. The dome fits into a user's outer ear, thereby to aid in positioning said handset on a user's ear. Openings radially placed on said receiver cap exterior surface and surrounding said earpiece, define an acoustic grill through which signal from said receiver speaker is passed substantially directly to said user's ear canal. Noise absorbing material is placed at strategic locations within the handset interior.

Noise-cancelling telephone handset

A telephone handset outbound noise canceller uses an omnidirectional reference microphone placed near the transmitter grille. Two adaptive filters are employed, one driven by the handset transmitter to subtract speech from a reference value to produce an enhanced reference signal; and a second adaptive filter driven by the enhanced reference signal to subtract noise from the transmitter. The weights of the two adaptive filters are allowed to adapt or are frozen according to criteria set as a result of transmitter power measurements which determine whether speech is likely to be present or not.

Outbound noise cancellation for telephonic handset

Telephone headsets used by operators and airline pilot headsets are subject to substantial amounts of interfering ambient noise which detract from the intelligibility of incoming speech. Noise reduction circuitry does not altogether eliminate the interfering sound. A headset speaker and error microphone housing are disclosed which enable a greater amount of unwanted noise elimination. The speaker and microphone are configured closely with respect to each other and also to the user's ear. They are acoustically isolated in their own chamber. The microphone is located approximately on the speaker axis and protrudes substantially into the user's ear; and also is disposed close to the speaker cone surface. Additional acoustical tuning features include venting ports in the housing, and acoustic damping padding at the microphone entrance and on either side of the speaker. These expedients enhance the ability of the noise-cancelling circuitry to effectively reduce the undesired noise heard by the user.
