A high pressure fuel line connection assembly for a fuel injector positioned in a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The cylinder head includes at least two bores formed therein with the second bore intersecting the first bore at an angle with respect to an axial direction of the first bore. A fuel injector is received in the first bore for injecting fuel into a cylinder of the engine, a fuel line for directing fuel to the fuel injector, an intermediate elongated fuel line adapter are received in the second bore for fluidicly conducting fuel from the fuel line to the fuel injector. The elongated fuel line adapter includes a first end contacting the fuel injector in a region of the fuel injector for receiving fuel to be injected and a fuel line connection fitting for biasing an end of the fuel line against a second end of the adapter and the first end of the adapter against the fuel injector in order to sealingly engage the adapter with both the fuel line and the fuel injector.

Manufacture of a liquid cooled cylinder head for an internal combustion engine is described which reduces incidence of casting fins that may block or impede coolant flow through the cylinder head. The head is cast without internal liquid coolant passages to interconnect the first and second cooling cavities. An opening is machined through an outer surface of the head to define a passage interconnecting the first and second cooling cavities to provide for communication of cooling liquid therebetween. The opening formed by machining through the outer surface of the head is closed. Throat area of the the passage may be selected to control coolant exchange between the first and second cooling cavities and additional passages may be machined in each head to provide additional coolant interchange or to vent air from the cooling cavities.

A rocker lever assembly for an internal combustion engine which employs four valves for each cylinder is provided. The rocker lever assembly includes a low cost support base formed of a sintered metal configured to support and precisely position an intake and an exhaust rocker arm in axially offset relative positions to provide driving connections between the engine pushrods and the cylinder valves.

Cast iron gears, such as those used as cam gears on engines and as used for fuel injection gear pumps, which have a hub and a rim that are thick in comparison to the relatively thin web used to interconnect the hub with the rim and a process by which such iron gears can be cast, especially in a vertical orientation. To eliminate porosity problems, single flow channel of substantial thickness is incorporated into the mold cavity which forms a flow rib that runs radially between the hub and rim of the gear being formed. To compensate for both the added weight of the rib that is produced on the web of the resultant gear, as well as to counterbalance the effect caused by the presence of a single rib, at least one opening is formed in the web at each side of the rib.

Ductile iron gear and casting process for the production thereof

A protective boot formed of a resilient elastomeric material is provided having a housing with an opening therein through which the reciprocating shaft of a solenoid or like device projects with the shaft being axially movable relative to the housing of the solenoid through a stroke of a predetermined length from an extended position to a retracted position. The protective boot includes a first ring portion sealingly fixed to the housing about the opening and, a second ring portion sealingly fixed to and reciprocatable with the shaft. The body portion of the boot forms a fluid chamber about the shaft between the first and second ring portions, with the body portion comprising at least one pair of truncated conical sections each being integrally formed at their narrow portion with a respective one of the ring portions and an intermediate portion integrally formed between the widened portions of the conical sections. The conical sections and the intermediate sections are provided with axial convolutions, ribs, or both for maintaining the conical sections and the intermediate portion axially rigid during movement of the shaft between the extended position and the retracted position. These convolutions or ribs also permit the conical sections and the intermediate portion to circumferentially expand and retract during movement of the shaft between its extended position and its retracted position to maintain an essentially constant volume within the fluid chamber.

A gear train housing of an engine of the type having an internal gear space located within housing parts which include at least one housing body part and at least one cover part. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the lower end of the gear space is substantially embodiment, the lower end of the gear space is substantially of a V-shape defined laterally on opposite sides by a radially facing sloping walls of the housing body part. In order to minimize oil related problems, bosses on the upwardly facing sloping walls have a wedge-like shape with a downwardly inclined, inwardly facing surface and are free of upwardly sloping surface portions which can collect fluid flowing over the bosses in proximity to a gasket seal between edge faces of the housing parts, and a splash shield is formed for preventing excessive quantities of oil from being splashed, by a crankshaft gear, into the area of other gears of the gear train, so as to reduce associated frictional losses.

A liquid fuel operated engine has an integral fuel filter head formed unitarily on a part of the engine, particularly the engine cylinder head. The integral fuel filter head is designed to matingly receive a fuel filter canister or an adapter for enabling a plurality of fuel filter canisters to be attached thereto. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the adapter is a plate-like structure having a base mounting socket on one side and a pair of filter canister mounting sockets on an opposite side thereof. The integral fuel filter head is, in accordance with the preferred embodiment, situated on the underside of a horizontally projecting flange formed on a side of the cylinder head. The adapter is designed to receive the same type of filter canisters as does the integral filter head.

A cooling unit is provided for an internal combustion engine wherein the latter is provided with a first interior portion having external inlet and outlet ports through which a first liquid circulates and a second interior portion through which a second liquid circulates. The second interior portion is provided with an access opening. The unit includes a base section which overlies the access opening and is sealingly secured to surface portions circumjacent the access opening. The base section is provided with a first set of ports which register with the inlet and outlet ports of the first interior portion, and a second set of ports. Mounted on one side of the base section is a heat exchange section which projects through the access opening into the second interior portion. The exterior of the heat exchange unit is contacted by the circulating second liquid. The interior of the heat exchange section is provided with a passageway through which the first liquid circulates. Mounted on and in sealing engagement with a second side of the base section is a cover section which is provided with a plurality of passages. One of the passages interconnects one of the first set of ports with one of the second set of ports and a second of the passages interconnects another of the first set of ports with another of the second set of ports.

Liquid cooling unit for an internal combustion engine

A ventilating system is provided for the crankcase of an internal combustion engine. The system includes an engine block provided with a crankcase and an upright housing, the latter having a lower section communicating with the crankcase and an upper section provided with a vent to the exterior of the engine. A crankshaft is mounted within the crankcase and is drivingly connected to a pressure-generating means disposed within the housing upper section and adjacent the vent. The driven presssure-generating means effects a predetermined pressure within the housing which is greater than the exterior pressure of the engine.
