The impact of a stabilizing additive for treating oil-based fluids having destabilized solids, such as asphaltenes and polynuclear aromatics, may be quantitatively assessed, by determining the settling rate of flocculated destabilized solids in samples of untreated oil-based fluids and oil-based fluids treated with the stabilizing additive through the use of a turbidity meter or nephelometer while the field and quantifying the difference between the two settling rates to determine if a change in the amount of stabilizing additive applied to the oil-based fluid is necessary.

Method for quantitatively assessing stability additive performance at field dosages

At least one pH-sensitive component may contact a refinery stream for measuring the pH of the refinery stream. A light from a light source may be emitted onto the pH-sensitive component, and a detector may detect a first luminescence or color change of chromophore measurement radiated from the pH-sensitive component. A first pH of the refinery stream may be determined from the first luminescence or color change of chromophore measurement.

Methods of measuring pH in refinery streams

The polymerization of monomers may be at least partially reduced or inhibited by introducing an effective amount of an additive. The additive may be or include at least one hydroquinone, such as but not limited to, 2,6-di-tert-butyl hydroquinone, 2,5 di-tert-butyl hydroquinone, 3,5 di-tert-butyl hydroquinone, 3,5 di-methyl hydroquinone, 3,6 di-tert-butyl hydroquinone, and combinations thereof. The polymerizable monomers may be or include, but are not limited to styrene, butadiene, isoprene, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, and combinations thereof.

Sodium borohydride (NaBH) may be used to removing carbonyl sulfide (COS) from a process stream containing it. The method involves contacting the process stream with an amount of effective of NaBHto react with the COS to form reaction products that may be removed by a process of washing away the reaction product by an aqueous basic compound and/or the reaction product having a higher boiling point than carbonyl sulfide which permits trapping the reaction product, such as in a caustic tower.

Elimination and/or mitigation of fouling in a vapor transport systems, such as vent lines and scrubber feed lines may be accomplished using an antifouling additive. The method for employing the antifouling additive includes introducing into the vapor transport system an additive including a polar solvent and corrosion inhibitor wherein: the vapor transport system is substantially water free; the vapor transport system is used to transport acidic materials; the additive is a liquid at vapor transport system operating conditions; and the additive is stable at the vapor transport system operating conditions.

Method for inhibiting fouling in vapor transport system

Heat exchanger fouling in organic chemical production processes may be reduced using an antifoulant additive. The antifoulant additive may have one component selected from the group consisting of an alkylphosphate ester, and an alpha olefin maleic anhydride copolymer; or it may have two components selected from the group consisting of a metallic overbase, an alkylphosphate ester, and an alpha olefin maleic anhydride copolymer, wherein at least one of the two components in not an overbase. An additive having three components: a metallic overbase, an alkylphosphate ester, and an alpha olefin maleic anhydride copolymer; is also within the scope of the disclosure.
