A sanitary absorbent article having flaps which substantially continually diverge from their proximal side over large portion of their length, preferably until their distal side. The substantially continually divergent portions being preferably substantially straight. The garment-facing surface of the flaps including an adhesive fastener which has a length not less than 85% of the length of the proximal side, and preferably not less than 100% of the length of the proximal side. The fastener preferably having reduced adhesive strength in the zones nearer the transverse sides of the flap.

The present invention relates to a sanitary absorbent article such as a sanitary napkin that has the ability to protect the undergarment of the wearer from being soiled by menstrual liquid. The sanitary napkin has a main body with panels that originate from its longitudinal side edges. A distal end of each panel that is continuous with the respective longitudinal side edge is folded underneath and affixed to the barrier later of the main body to form a looping member and a freely extending flap. As a result the effective affixation point of each flap is located inwardly of the respective side edge of the main body.

A method of manufacturing sanitary absorbent articles suitable for placement within a crotch portion of an undergarment of a wearer, the absorbent article having a main body and a flap projecting laterally from a respective longitudinal side of the main body, the first flap having to longitudinal sides, each longitudinal side projecting laterally outward from the first longitudinal side of said main body intermediate the transverse sides of said main body. The method includes the steps of providing a web of at least one layer of continuous material, severing from the web a first article and a second article arranged with respect to the other wherein when the second article is rotated with respect to the first article such that the first longitudinal side of the main body of each of the articles faces the first longitudinal side of the main body of the other of the articles and such that the first transverse side of each of the articles is aligned with the second transverse side of the other of the articles, an imaginary line generally parallel to, and located in-between the longitudinal center-lines of each of the main bodies of each of the articles simultaneously intersects the first flap of each of the articles.

A sanitary absorbent article is provided which has a generally rectangular main body and two positioning tabs laterally extending from the main body for use in securing the article to an undergarment of a user. An apparatus for printing a fibrous web with a decorative pattern, comprising a printing roll having a cavity forming a shaped ink transfer zone to print a principal pattern on the fibrous web through rolling contact therewith, and an array of small recesses in a spaced apart relationship surrounding the cavity and having the ability to trap dirt particles adhering to the printing roll which are being trained over its relief surface by a doctor blade scraping excess ink therefrom. The array of recesses provides a cleaning action by continuously dislodging dirt particles collecting underneath the leading edge of the doctor blade and preventing the dirt particles from agglomerating into large flocs which may interfere with the operation of the doctor blade. The array of recesses also defines an ink transfer zone printing on the fibrous web a relatively faint background pattern upon which the principal pattern is visually eminent. The invention also extends to a method for conditioning a printing roll to prevent dirt particles from accumulating under a doctor blade used in association with the printing roll.
