A marine propulsion device comprising a propulsion unit adapted to be mounted to a boat for pivotal movement about a generally horizontal tilt axis, and for pivotal movement about a generally vertical steering axis, the propulsion unit including a propeller shaft adapted to support a propeller for rotation therewith, the marine propulsion device further comprising a steering mechanism for pivoting the propulsion unit about the steering axis, and a control system including structure for sensing force applied on the steering mechanism by the propulsion unit, and structure for pivoting the propulsion unit about the tilt axis in response to the force sensed by the force sensing structure.

A valve having a housing including an inlet, an outlet, an internal passage connecting the inlet and the outlet, a pressure responsive member movably supported by the housing for opening and closing the internal passage, and a spring located between the member and the inlet for biasing the member away from the inlet.

A marine propulsion device comprising a propulsion unit including an internal combustion engine, the engine comprising a cylinder, a water jacket, a water jacket inlet port communicating with the water jacket, and a lower face having therein an exhaust outlet port communicating with the cylinder, the propulsion unit also including a drive shaft housing having a lower end, a gearcase connected to the lower end of the drive shaft housing, a propeller rotatably supported by the gearcase, a drive shaft which extends through the drive shaft housing and which includes an upper end driven by the engine and a lower end drivingly connected to the propeller, and an exhaust housing located at least partially within the drive shaft housing and connected to the lower face of the engine, the exhaust housing comprising an exhaust passage located interiorly of the exhaust housing and communicating with the exhaust outlet port, a water intake port, and a water intake passage located interiorly of the exhaust housing and communicating between the water intake port and the water jacket inlet port, and a water pump having an outlet communicating with the water intake port.

A marine propulsion device comprising a propulsion unit adapted to be mounted on the transom of a boat for pivotal movement relative to the transom about a generally horizontal tilt axis, and about a vertical steering axis, the propulsion unit including a rotatably mounted propeller, and an engine drivingly connected to the propeller, a tiller arm connected to the propulsion unit, a contractable and extendible hydraulic assembly including a cylinder connected to one of the propulsion unit and the transom, a piston slideably received in the cylinder and dividing the cylinder into opposite first and second chambers, and a piston rod having one end fixedly connected to the piston and an opposite end extending outwardly of the cylinder and being connected to the other of the propulsion unit and the transom, a valve for alternatively permitting and preventing fluid flow from the first chamber to the second chamber, and a lever mounted on the tiller arm for actuating the valve.

A marine propulsion lower unit including a gear case supporting a propeller shaft adapted to carry a propeller, which gear case has an upper surface including therein a cylindrical well defined by cylindrical peripheral wall and a bottom wall having therein an axial bore, a combined shift rod bushing and gear case seal assembly comprising a hub having an axis and axially spaced first and second ends, which hub also includes therein an axial bore extending from the first end, and which hub also includes therein a counter bore extending from the second end, and communicating with the axial bore in coaxial relation thereto, a flange extending from the hub and received in the well in the gear case, a pair of attachment arms extending from the hub in transverse radially outward relation to the axis of the hub and fixedly connected to the gear case, a plug member received in the counter bore and having an axial bore communicating with the axial bore in the hub, a shift rod extending through the axial bore in the plug member and through the axial bore in the hub, a first seal between the flange and the gear case, and a second seal between the plug member and each of the hub and the shift rod.

Combined shift rod bushing and gear case seal for marine propulsion

An assembly for mounting a marine propulsion unit on the transom of a boat, the assembly comprising a transom bracket adapted to be fixedly mounted on the transom, the transom bracket having mounted thereon a tilt pin and including bores permitting selective location of the tilt pin in a plurality of fixed positions relative to the transom bracket, a swivel bracket mounted on the transom bracket for pivotal movement relative thereto about a generally horizontal tilt axis, an extendible and contractable linkage having a first end pivotally connected to the tilt pin and a second end pivotally connected to the swivel bracket, and a mechanism for selectively and alternatively extending and contracting the linkage for moving the swivel bracket between an operating position and a raised position.

A cylinder liner comprising a generally cylindrical outer wall, a generally cylindrical inner wall defining a cylinder having a bottom end, and an exhaust port communicating with the cylinder and being defined by an upper wall extending between the inner and outer walls and being curved concavely with respect to the bottom end, a lower wall extending between the inner and outer walls and being curved convexly with respect to the bottom end, and opposite side walls extending between the inner and outer walls and between the upper and lower walls and converging toward the bottom end of the cylinder.

Two cycle cylinder block foam pattern

A core unit for use in casting a cylinder block of an internal combustion engine which core unit comprises a preformed cylinder liner which includes a cylindrical sidewall defining an interior bore and having a port in the sidewall. A first core unit is formed of a reducible material molded upon the preformed liner, which first core unit includes a first main core portion which partially occupies the bore and a port core portion which extends through the port. A second core unit is formed of the reducible material separately from the first core unit and is assembled upon the cylinder liner, which second core units includes a second main core portion in the bore and in mating alignment with the first main core portion, thereby forming a composite core assemblage. The composite core assemblage is placed into a cylinder block mold, and molten metal is caused to enter the cylinder block mold, thereby forming a cylinder block surrounding the composite core assemblage. The reducible material of the first and second core structures is then reduced to open the interior bore and the associated port, thereby forming a cylinder block having a cast body portion in which the cylinder liner and associated exhaust and transfer passages are all integrally cast.
