An apparatus for determining the pressure within the combustion chamber of an engine. The engine has a fuel injector seated within an opening of a cylinder head to inject fuel into the combustion chamber. Combustion chamber pressure acts upon the fuel injector to eject the fuel injector from the cylinder head. A clamping arrangement is provided to mount the fuel injector on the cylinder head and resist the force applied against the fuel injector by the pressure within the combustion chamber. A strain measuring transducer is associated with the clamping arrangement to measure the force that is exerted upon the clamping arrangement by the fuel injector, to thereby indirectly measure the combustion chamber pressure acting against the fuel injector.

Method and apparatus for indirect measurement of engine cylinder pressure

Dual-lobed cams mounted on the intake camshaft of a diesel engine selectively retard timing of the intake valve closure. The purpose of retarding timing of the intake valves is to retard valve closing sufficiently to shorten the effective compression strokes of the pistons and thus reduce the effective compression ratio. This occurs when the intake valves remain open past piston bottom dead center for a desired period into the normal compression stroke phase of engine operation. This reduces compression pressures so that combustion temperatures are reduced and exhaust emissions, primarily NOx, may be thus limited under conditions of warmed-up engine operation. Dual-lobed cams may also be employed to retard timing of the intake valve opening to throttle admitted air during cold running conditions to effect higher in-cylinder charge temperatures to reduce hydrocarbon and white smoke emissions due to poor ignition and incomplete combustion.

A cam phaser is mounted on the exhaust camshaft of a diesel engine and is operable to selectively advance timing of only the exhaust valves relative to a nominal position. The purpose of advancing timing of the exhaust valves is to advance valve closing sufficiently to shorten the effective exhaust strokes of the pistons and thus increase the trapped hot exhaust residuals. This occurs when the exhaust valves close earlier than piston top dead center in the normal exhaust stroke phase of engine operation. This increases the in-cylinder temperature so that combustion stability and hydrocarbon emissions are improved.

Exhaust gas temperature is increased to improve the effectiveness of an after-treatment system having an activation temperature by deactivating one or more engine cylinders to increase the exhaust gas temperature from the remaining cylinders (during acceleration) or to decreasing exhaust gas flow rate (during deceleration or idling). In the system of the invention, a controller effects the deactivation and reactivation of cylinders and/or decrease and increase of exhaust gas flow in response to one or more sensors providing input of exhaust gas temperature or information from which exhaust gas temperature can be approximated. By achieving and maintaining the activation temperature, the present invention improves the effectiveness of after-treatment devices thereby lowering regulated emissions to desired levels.

Method for reducing engine exhaust emissions

Combinations of split and valved exhaust ports are provided in a ported two cycle engine with divided emission control system to provide better control of the division of exhaust gas flow to the two converters.

Two cycle engine catalytic emission control

A two-stroke cycle spark ignition cylinder fuel injection engine is provided with an exhaust emission control system that separately treats hot blowdown gases and uses the hot treated gases to warm the scavenging gases for further treatment. Various exhaust gas separation concepts are described for use in separating the blowdown and scavenging portions of the exhaust gas discharged from the cylinder exhaust ports.

A direct injection internal combustion engine of the diesel or spark ignition type is provided with a combustion bowl recess in the head end of the piston having both a polygonal lip and a polygonal bowl with upwardly and inwardly curving reentrant sides to provide high turbulence for fuel air mixing during an extended portion of the piston compression stroke and improved combustion of the air/fuel mixture.

A two cycle engine wherein the scavenging gas is heated at low loads to improve scavenging. The gas may be heated by passage through finned passages in heat exchange relation with the exhaust ports with valves to direct the flow through unheated passages during higher load operation.
