One embodiment of the invention provides a system for identifying an anomalous movement of a reciprocating element in a reciprocating device, the system comprising: at least one sensing device for sensing a vibration signal of the reciprocating element; a processing apparatus for separating the vibration signal into a first component having a first frequency range and a second component having a second frequency range different than the first frequency range; and a device for at least one of analyzing or displaying at least one of the first or the second components of the vibration signal, wherein the vibration signal includes positional data of the reciprocating element along at least one axis of the reciprocating element.

Detection of anomalous movement in a reciprocating device

A system and method enable monitoring of a mechanical condition of a reciprocating compressor. The compressor includes a compressor frame, a pressure chamber, and a pressure head. A plurality of tie bolts are secured between the compressor frame and the pressure chamber head. A sensor assembly is secured to one of the plurality of tie bolts. The sensor assembly includes an elongation member positioned to extend in concert with extension of one of the tie bolts. A sensor measures extension of the elongation member to thereby monitor cylinder pressure.

A method and apparatus for direct measurement of rider band wear in a valve assembly for a reciprocating compressor is provided. A distance transducer probe is inserted through a compressor valve assembly to measure a distance between a piston assembly and the transducer probe and the wear of a rider band is determined based on the distance.

A method for simulating a compressor valve leak is described. The method includes inducing a flow of gas past a compressor valve that is coupled to a bypass block, wherein the bypass block defines a first passageway and a second passageway therein, and wherein the bypass block is also coupled to a bypass valve that is in flow communication with the second passageway. The method also includes measuring a first temperature and a second temperature. The first temperature is the temperature of the gas flowing through the first passageway of the bypass block and the second temperature is the temperature of gas flowing within the second passageway. The method also includes adjusting the bypass valve to divert a portion of the gas flowing through the second passageway to create temperature conditions substantially similar to conditions that are created due to a compressor valve leak.

A method for monitoring a condition of at least one valve positioned with respect to at least one of a first chamber and a second chamber of a reciprocating compressor is provided. The method includes establishing a compressor operation cycle including a valve opening event, a valve closing event and/or a rod reversal event. A crank angle is determined at each of the valve opening event, the valve closing event and/or the rod reversal event during the compressor operation cycle using at least one of a static pressure input and a machine speed input. The method further include diagnosing a valve leak condition during the compressor operation cycle at the valve closing event, wherein the at least one valve is closed.

The apparatus includes a resilient, serpentine-shaped middle portion, a first end portion located at one end of the middle portion, and a second end portion at another end of the middle portion. A system and method for monitoring the condition of a gear assembly analyzes a signal output by a vibration detector that is attached to the gear assembly. Each time that an amplitude of the signal output from the vibration detector exceeds a threshold value, the system assumes that a debris particle has passed between meshing parts of the gear assembly. The number of times that this occurs, and possibly the amplitude of the vibrations are analyzed to determine a condition of the gear assembly, and possibly a damage index. A four-wire system is disclosed for communicating between the host station and several remote stations. A first pair of wires is employed across which the remote stations are coupled in shunt, and over which the host station addresses the particular remote station with which it wishes to communicate, and supplies power to the several remote stations. The remote stations are coupled in shunt to a second pair of wires and transmit real time analog information to the host station over the second pair of wires. Each remote station includes a receiving section, which determines whether an address appearing on the first pair of wires corresponds to the particular remote station, and if so, activates power to a transmitting section therein. The transmitting section responds to control information extracted by the receiving section from the address and transmits selected real time information back to the host station over the second pair of wires by way of a differential voltage format. The control information includes instructions as to the source of real time information to be transmitted by the transmitting section to the host station.
