A novel photovoltaic module (10) and method for constructing the same are disclosed. The module (10) includes a plurality of photovoltaic cells (12) formed on a substrate (14) and laterally separated by interconnection regions (15). Each cell (12) includes a bottom electrode (16), a photoactive layer (18) and a top electrode layer (20). Adjacent cells (12) are connected in electrical series by way of a conductive-buffer line (22). The buffer line (22) is also useful in protecting the bottom electrode (16) against severing during downstream layer cutting processes.

A laminating device for laminating a continuous web of paper material to a continuous web of film material for forming a continuous web of laminated composite material at a laminating nip. Apparatus for dividing the paper web into at least two segregated tension zones upstream of the laminating nip and for dividing the composite web into at least two segregated tension zones downstream of the laminating nip are described. Control systems for monitoring and maintaining the tension in each tension zone at different, preset values, are also described.

Disclosed is a system for automatically loading a transport vehicle with unit loads by automatically moving the unit loads from a predetermined loading position to prescribed positions in the transport vehicle. The present invention uses a loading vehicle which receives loads from a staging device which positions the unit loads in the predetermined loading position. A unit load transfer device transfers the unit loads from the staging device to the loading vehicle. The loading vehicle uses on-board sensors in combination with placement information provided by a staging processor to perform translational and operational movements which are processed by an on-board loading vehicle processor. Unit loads can be deposited throughout the transport vehicle by maintaining a guidance path which is internally generated within the transport vehicle and can be either internally or externally generated outside the transport vehicle.

A monitoring device for a can testing machine which provides a visual display on a cathode ray tube identifying potential can production process problems and can testing machine problems. The visual dislay provides a summary of can test data as well as analysis messages. A microcomputer is utilized in conjunction with the can testing machine and logic hardware to perform the summary and analysis functions of the preferred embodiment.

Monitoring system for a container testing machine

A photomultiplier tube assembly for use in high speed light testing apparatus for making a series of light measurements in rapid succession. Electronic circuitry is described for removing noise from a light measurement signal generated by the photomultiplier tube. Other circuitry is described for sensing the presence or absence of a measured object in a testing apparatus and for switching the photomultiplier tube on and off in response thereto. Circuitry for generating a signal to reject defective articles subsequent to testing is described.

A variable speed machine for continuous testing of articles by use of processing air including: a shaft member rotatably supported on a frame and driven by a variable speed motor, a transfer wheel with a plurality of article holding pockets affixed to the shaft member, sealing apparatus mounted on the shaft member and associated with each article holding pocket and an extendable and retractable apparatus for sealingly engaging a portion of an article carried by an associated pocket during a testing period, pressurizing apparatus associated with the sealing apparatus for providing pressurized air to the seal and the test article, control valve apparatus for regulating the air pressure to the seal and the test article, shaft rotational speed monitoring apparatus providing a speed based signal and processing means for controlling operation of the control valve apparatus based on the speed based signal to provide an optimum air pressure to the sealing apparatus and associated test article.

A device for enhancing the lift capability of an aircraft wing is characterized by at least one forwardly projecting finger member mounted on the leading edge of the wing. The finger generates counter-rotating vortices, each in contact with the other, trailing backwardly across the upper surface of the wing behind the fingers as the airflow moves upwardly and around the lateral edges of the finger. As the counter-rotating vortices trail backwardly over the upper surface of the wing, a blockage effect is created and the airflow patterns across the wing are modified to produce an increase in lift.
