An auxiliary wing and flap assembly for an aircraft which is to be extendable from a retracted position to a deployed position. Relative to the chord of the wing, the split flap is located directly adjacent the trailing edge of the wing with the auxiliary wing assembly being located at approximately the mid length of the chord of the wing. A split flap assembly extends approximately one-half the length of the aircraft wing with the auxiliary wing assembly extending the total length of the aircraft wing. The split flap is extendable to assume approximately a sixty degree angle relative to the bottom surface of the aircraft wing while the auxiliary wing assembly is extendible to assume a maximum of ninety degree angle relative to the bottom surface of the aircraft wing. The chord length of the split flap is equal to approximately 0.15 of the chord length of the aircraft wing while the auxiliary wing assembly has an airfoil-shaped member that has a chord length of approximately 0.25 the chord length of the aircraft wing.

A method and apparatus for evaluating the viability of a tissue of interest, particularly that presents as dead but may be merely stunned or hibernating with reduced or no obvious activity, such as contractility. Dynamic measurement of oxidative metabolism or other metaboic function permits distinguishing between different stages of compromised tissue such as myocardium. Measurements can be made using near-infrared illumination and detection coupled with infusion of one or more metabolic substrates to the region of interest to evaluate whether a metabolic pathway cascade or a trans-membrane ionic potential are intact and thereby provide an indication of the viability of the cell. One preferred instrument includes a catheter having a tip configured to be positioned adjacent to the tissue to be monitored. Optical fibers extend through the catheter to transmit a monitoring light beam from the tip into the tissue, and to receive a cytochrome-redox-response-dependent light beam from the tissue. Needles in the tip releasably anchor the catheter to the tissue and deliver metabolism-stimulating substances. Redox signals representative of cytochrome aa.sub.3 redox responses in the tissue are generated by a spectrometer coupled to the optical fibers. A computer coupled to the spectrometer generates metabolism readings as a function of the redox signals.

A flap assembly attached to the undersurface of a wing of an aircraft. The size of the flap has been precisely designed in view of the size of the wing of the aircraft and also precisely located relative to the wing of the aircraft so that the flap can be used as an air brake to substantially slow the speed of the aircraft when landing without loss of lift thereby utilizing substantially less runway during landing. Also, the flap assembly can be deployed to increase lift for the purpose of utilizing substantially less runway during take-off.
