There is provided a hydrocracking process using a catalyst comprising a hydrogenation/dehydrogenation component, such as a noble metal, and an acidic solid component comprising a Group IVB metal oxide modified with an oxyanion of a Group VIB metal. An example of this catalyst is zirconia, modified with tungstate and platinum. This catalyst is used to selectively hydrocrack naphtha range hydrocarbons to reduce the endpoint of reformulated gasolines.

Process for naphtha hydrocracking

This is a process for upgrading a petroleum naphtha fraction. The naphtha is subjected to reforming and the reformate is cascaded to a benzene and toluene synthesis zone over a benzene and toluene synthesis catalyst comprising a molecular sieve of low acid activity. The preferred molecular sieve is steamed ZSM-5. The benzene and toluene synthesis zone is operated under conditions compatible with the conditions of the reformer such as pressures of above about 50 psig (446 kPa) and temperatures above about 800.degree. F. (427.degree. C). In one aspect of the invention, the benzene and toluene synthesis catalyst includes a metal hydrogenation component such as cobalt, nickel, platinum or palladium. In one mode of operation, the benzene and toluene synthesis catalyst replaces at least a portion of the catalyst of the reformer. The process produces a product containing an increased proportion of benzene and toluene, and a reduced proportion of C8 aromatics, particularly ethylbenzenes, as compared to the reformate.

Hydrocarbon conversion

Catalytically cracked naphthas containing C.sub.9 + hydrocarbons are hydrocracked over a crystalline zeolite, typically, mildly steamed zeolite beta then subjected to reforming to achieve a gasoline product of reduced end boiling range and higher octane than the feed. A hydrogen stream from the reformer which contains a catalytic promoter, such as chlorine, is separated into a first stream and a second stream. The first stream is treated over a solid sorbent to remove the promoter and recycled promoter to the hydrocracking step while the untreated second hydrogen stream which contains promoter is recycled to the reformer.

Heavy naphtha conversion

A hydrocarbon fraction, preferably in the kerosene boiling range containing a substantial proportion of C.sub.9 + hydrocarbons is contacted with an n-paraffin fraction, such as n-pentane, over a catalyst of acidic functionality, such as Pd/zeolite beta, under conditions of hydrocracking sufficient to convert the feed to lower boiling range materials of high octane number. The n-paraffin cofeed promotes isomerization and suppresses production of n-paraffins.

Hydrocarbon conversion process

A fluid catalytically cracked heavy naphtha containing a substantial proportion of preferably more than 90% C.sub.9 + hydrocarbons is contacted with a reformate heavy naphtha containing a substantial proportion of C.sub.9 + hydrocarbons and, optionally, a benzene-rich stream, over a catalyst of acidic functionality, preferably unsteamed ZSM-5, under transalkylation reaction conditions of temperature and pressure to produce a gasoline boiling range product, boiling below 300.degree. F., having a reduced sulfur content and an increased octane number. In one mode of operation the reformate is cascaded from the reformer as the conditions of reaction are compatible with the conditions established in the reformer.

Heavy naphtha upgrading

There is provided a gallium-containing MCM-22 zeolite. There are also provided methods for making this zeolite and processes for using this zeolite as a catalyst for the conversion of organic molecules. Particular conversions are reforming and the dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane to form toluene.

A feed containing at least one C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 oxygenate, e.g., methanol, and at least one light olefin, e.g., propylene, is directly converted over a particular zeolite catalyst to a low aromatic distillate range hydrocarbon product.

Low boiling paraffinic feedstreams such as solvent raffinates and straight run naphthas are disproportionated in the presence of an intermediate pore size zeolite such as ZSM-5 under conditions of moderately elevated temperatures and pressures to produce products boiling in the middle distillate range, such as jet fuel and diesel fuel, of highly paraffinic character.

Production of middle distillates by paraffin disproportionation

Benzene reacts with itself to produce liquid aromatic compounds having more than 6 carbon atoms, in the presence of zeolite characterized as a medium pore size and having an activity defined by an alpha value of at least 50.

Benzene conversion over ZSM-5

Mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and toluene are alkylated with C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 paraffins in the presence of an acidic zeolite catalyst such as ZSM-5 in a one-step process to produce alkylaromatic products in high selectivity. Benzene and propane reactants produce predominantly C.sub.7 to C.sub.9 aromatics.
