The present invention addresses the problem of using reputation to establish trust between strangers in a person-to-person transaction in an electronic commerce system without the drawbacks of subjective reputation feedback systems. The present invention generates objective feedback for transaction participants by monitoring their actual behavior at a variety of well-defined points in the transaction, such as payment and shipping. An objective reputation characterization system for use in a person-to-person electronic commerce system is disclosed. The system includes a data capture component to receive a first notification of a deadline relating to a transaction event and to receive a second notification of the transaction event occurring corresponding to the deadline, and an analysis component to build an objective reputation profile of a transaction participant based at least in part on the notifications.

Facilitating electronic commerce through automated data-based reputation characterization

A person-to-person electronic commerce system that protects the anonymity of buyers and sellers. Embodiments of the present invention interpose a trusted intermediary between the buyer and seller during the transaction fulfillment process. Buyer and seller may disclose their personal information to the trusted intermediary. The trusted intermediary then arranges payment and shipping on behalf of the parties. In this way, neither buyer nor seller need know anything about the other in order to fulfill the transaction. The system may include an auction web site for holding an electronic auction of goods resulting in a transaction between a buyer and a seller, and a trusted intermediary, coupled to the auction web site, to obtain transaction, buyer, and seller information from the auction web site, to arrange for shipment of the goods with a selected shipper, to generate an encrypted mailing label, at least part of the transaction, buyer, and seller information being included as part of the encrypted mailing label, to send the encrypted mailing label to the seller, to receive notification of acceptance by the buyer once buyer receives the goods from the seller via the shipper, and to send payment for the goods to the seller.

A method for characterizing the bandwidth available to a user of a Web browser is disclosed. The method includes sending a request to a server requesting a transfer of a file containing data; receiving a response back from the server relating to the transfer; determining the amount of time expired between sending the request and receiving the response; receiving at least a portion of the data of the file from the server; and determining the amount of the data received within a preselected period of time.

Implemented to operate in conjunction with a non-real-time operating system, the real-time media driver comprises a wave driver which controls a predominant percentage of the operations of the media hardware device and a mini-device driver which is software provided by the vendor of the media hardware device to support functions unique to the particular media hardware device. Furthermore, the real-time media driver comprises a media scheduler which (i) synchronizes multiple media streams prior to being input into a mixing/splitting device of the media scheduler; (ii) allows reconfiguration of attributes of media streams without loss of content prior to and after operations by the mixing/splitting device; and (iii) appropriately mixes media to produce multi-channel media according to a certain 'prioritized sharing' policies.
