A method and system for determining and controlling air/fuel ratio during engine cold start operation relies on applying a monotonically decreasing fuel pulse width modulation to the engine and synchronously measuring the effect of the modulation on related engine event periods. This effect is utilized in estimating air/fuel ratio, which is then compared to the desired air/fuel ratio. The difference between the estimated air/fuel ratio and the desired air/fuel ratio is used in controlling the air/fuel ratio to the desired air/fuel ratio.

An air/fuel mixture control system for an internal combustion engine uses a closed-loop controller which varies the air/fuel mixture in response to the oxygen level in the engine's exhaust emissions to achieve stoichiometry. The oxygen level sensor produces a binary signal indicating either a rich or a lean mixture. The controller responds by generating a fuel delivery rate control signal which has three components: an integral (ramp function) component, a proportional step function component which abruptly jumps the control signal to an intermediate level at the time of each oxygen level change, and a differential overshoot component which (1) injects a compensating volume of fuel into the engine intake at the onset of each lean signal, and (2) subtracts a compensating volume of fuel from the intake at the onset of each rich signal. The compensating fuel volume minimizes the effects of fuel puddling in the intake manifold to reduce the effective closed loop delay time for better control. The magnitude of the compensating volume may be altered in response to detected engine speed and/or load, or alternatively may be adaptively varied to achieve maximum closed loop cycling frequencies.

The method for determining a fault in an exhaust gas recirculation system includes comparing the measured exhaust gas flow of the EGR system to an expected exhaust gas recirculation flow. If the two are not the same the time period that the expected exhaust gas recirculation flow deviates from the measured exhaust gas recirculation flow by a calibrated EGR flow amount is determined. A fault condition in the EGR system is indicated if the duration of the deviation exceeds a predetermined amount of time.

A compressor with a rotary driven centrifugal impeller which receives inlet air from an inlet passageway and this discharges compressed air through a radially extending diffuser passageway. Moveable vanes are provided both in the inlet passageway and diffuser passageway for varying the pressure and flow output from the compressor while maintaining the rotary speed of the centrifugal impeller substantially constant. In the preferred form of the invention, the centrifugal impeller and an electrical generator are rotatably driven at a constant speed and in synchronism with each other and, together, form an electrical and pneumatic power system.

A fuel injection fuel supply system for an automotive type internal combustion engine in which a single fuel injector injects all of the fuel in equal amounts to each of the engine cylinders through an atmospheric air chamber from which fuel is discharged and combined with the air for atomization of the fuel and passage of an emulsion of air and fuel into each individual engine intake port.

A very low pressure fuel injection system uses an engine driven mechanical fuel pump to supply fuel at low pressure to a fuel devaporizing chamber normally filled with liquid fuel and in which is immersed the body portion of an electronically opened fuel injector positioned to spray fuel axially into the upper end of the induction passage of an air throttling body, the chamber containing a fuel pressure accumulator and a fuel pressure regulator maintaining the fuel pressure at a level slightly below the pump delivery pressure and at the injection level, the fuel chamber being rapidly purged of vapors during engine cranking and running operations.
