Example embodiments relate to phase difference detection systems and method for detecting phase difference. One embodiment includes a phase difference detection system for a single target location. The system includes a laser source to generate a laser beam. The system also includes a phase difference detector coupled to the laser source and having a multi-layer structure. The phase difference detector includes a planar waveguide for guiding the laser beam. The phase difference detector also includes a grating coupler to split the laser beam into a reference beam and a measurement beam. Additionally, the phase detector includes a planar imager array forming a second layer of the multi-layer structure. Further, the phase difference detector includes an optical system configured to focus the measurement beam output from the phase difference detector on the single target location and to focus signals reflected at the target location to the phase difference detector.

Phase difference detection system and a method for detecting a phase difference

The disclosure includes a system for photoacoustic inspection of an object. The system includes a broadband emission source configured to generate an emission beam, a direction apparatus including at least one spectrum splitter configured to split the emission beam into at least a first and a second component, the direction apparatus being configured to sequentially direct the respective components to N respective locations on the object at N times to generate N respective acoustic waves within the object. The N respective locations and N times are such that the respective N acoustic waves at least semi-constructively interfere to generate a respective propagating acoustic wave within the object. The system also includes a vibration sensing system configured to detect said respective propagating acoustic waves at a respective detection location on the object.

System and method for photoacoustic inspection of an object

A temperature compensation method for wavelength monitoring using spectrometers on photonic integrated chips and a related temperature-compensated wavelength monitoring device include an optical filter of the chip filters a source signal to provide at least one spectral reference line to a first spectrometer to detect thermal wavelength drifts thereof. At least one spectral line to be monitored is received by the same or another spectrometer of the chip to detect wavelength shifts thereof. The detected thermal drift of the reference line is compared to calibrated thermal drifts for the reference line which is associated with a calibrated thermal drift for the spectral response curve of the spectrometer receiving the spectral line to be monitored. A thermal drift rate for the response curve of the optical filter differs from a thermal drift rate for the response curve of the first spectrometer at least by an amount.

On-chip temperature-insensitive read-out

A gas sensor device () is configured to measure a predetermined gas of interest and comprises an enclosure () comprising a semiconductor substrate () and defining a first cavity (), an optically transmissive second closed cavity () and a third cavity (). The second cavity () is interposed between the first and third cavities (). The first cavity () comprises an inlet port () for receiving a gas under test, an outlet port () for venting the gas under test. The first cavity () also comprises an optical source () and a measurement sensor (). The second cavity () is configured as a gaseous filter comprising a volume of the gas of interest sealingly disposed in the second cavity (), and the third cavity () comprises a reference measurement sensor () disposed therein.

Gas sensor device and method of manufacturing the same

An integrated wavelength-selective filter device comprises a first optical element, for directing received radiation into a direction defined by a first angle, and a second optical element being a diffractive element configured for diffracting the directed radiation under a second angle. The second angle is such that for a single reference wavelength the diffracted radiation is directed into a propagation medium for advancing therein towards a predetermined position on the first optical element or on a further optical element for filtering radiation having a wavelength substantially matching the reference wavelength from radiation having a substantially different wavelength. The propagation medium is formed from a material that is different from any material of the substrate of the first and the second optical element.

Temperature insensitive filter

Described herein is a method and system for mitigating the effects of speckle in a laser Doppler system, and, in particular in a laser Doppler vibrometry/velocimetry system. A scan unit is provided in at least one of: a transmit path for scanning at least one beam from a transmitting antenna over a moving target surface and a receive path for scanning at least one reflected beam received from the moving target surface onto a receiving antenna. An averaging unit is provided prior to post-processing or demodulation to average electrical signals corresponding to the reflected beams. By averaging before demodulation, speckle in the output signal is mitigated.

Speckle mitigation

An on-chip broadband radiation source, and methods for its manufacture such that a photonics IC comprises an optical waveguide such as a semiconductor waveguide, a thin III-V material membrane with absorption capability for absorbing an optical pump signal induced in the waveguide. The III-V membrane comprises a LED implemented therein. The photonics IC also comprises a coupling means between the waveguide and the membrane. The device provides a broadband radiation source at a wavelength longer than the wavelength of the transferred radiation. The broadband signal can then be coupled out through the waveguide and used in the chip.

On-chip broadband light source

A sensor for sensing a substance such as for example glucose. The sensor is implantable in the body of a living creature. The sensor has a photonic integrated circuit, e.g. silicon-photonics integrated circuit, for spectrally processing radiation interacting with the sample. A continuous monitoring system can also include such a sensor.

Implantable sensor

An integrated waveguide based spectrometer is described. The spectrometer comprises a sensing region for receiving multi-wavelength radiation for irradiating a sample in the sensing region, a wavelength demultiplexing element arranged for capturing said multi-wavelength radiation after interaction with the sample and for providing a number of wavelength demultiplexed radiation outputs or a number of different groups of wavelength demultiplexed radiation outputs, an integrated modulator for differently modulating the different demultiplexed radiation outputs or different groups of demultiplexed radiation outputs, and a multiplexer element for multiplexing the differently modulated demultiplexed radiation outputs or the differently grouped demultiplexed radiation outputs.

Integrated spectrometers with single pixel detector

A system for selectively adiabatically coupling electromagnetic waves from one waveguide to another waveguide is described. It comprises a first waveguide portion and a second waveguide portion having substantially different surface normal cross-sections. Portions thereof are positioned with respect to each other in a coupling region so that under first predetermined environmental conditions coupling of electromagnetic waves between the first waveguide portion and the second waveguide portion can occur and under second predetermined environmental conditions substantially no coupling of electromagnetic waves between the first waveguide portion and the second waveguide portion can occur. The system also comprises a fluid positioning means for selectively positioning at least a first fluid simultaneously overlaying both said first waveguide portion and said second waveguide portion in the coupling region thus selectively inducing first predetermined environmental conditions or second predetermined environmental conditions.

Adiabatic coupler

A sensing system and method for sensing a component in a liquid is disclosed. The system comprises a microfluidic channel, the microfluidic channel comprising a first end and a second end, wherein the microfluidic channel is open at the first end and closed at the second end. The system also comprises at least one measurement sensor positioned adjacent the first end, the measurement sensor being arranged for detecting a measurement signal and a reference sensor positioned in the microfluidic channel adjacent the second end, the reference sensor being arranged for detecting a reference signal of the liquid. The system further is configured for combining the measurement signal and the reference signal so as to filter out background influences.

Sensing of components in liquids

In the present invention, a molecular analysis device comprises a substrate, and a waveguide with a planar integrating element and filter or reflector element adjacent thereto is disposed on the substrate. The waveguide comprises a coupling means configured for coupling a predetermined frequency range of laser radiation into the waveguide. At least one metallic nanostructure is disposed on or adjacent to the planar integrating element, at least one metallic nanostructure is configured such that the field intensity and the gradient of the laser radiation, that is coupled into the waveguide, are enhanced over a sufficiently large volume around the nanostructure to simultaneously cause plasmonic based optical trapping of analyte(s) in a medium, and plasmonic based excitation of the particles to produce Raman scattered radiation. A Raman scattered radiation collection means is disposed on the substrate for collecting said Raman scattered radiation produced by the particles.

Molecular analysis device

A photonic integrated device comprises a waveguide embedded in a photonic substrate. The waveguide has a waveguide radiation exit surface and the waveguide is optically connected to a two dimensional grating. The photonic integrated device also comprises a two dimensional grating having a plurality of curved elongate scattering elements. The two dimensional grating is adapted for diffracting radiation received from the waveguide toward a direction out of the photonic substrate and the curved elongate scattering elements are oriented with respect to the waveguide such that, for points of the scattering elements which can be irradiated by radiations stemming from the waveguide, normal lines to at least the curved elongate scattering element closest to the waveguide radiation exit surface do not substantially intersect with the waveguide radiation exit surface of the waveguide.

Integrated photonics waveguide grating coupler

A hybrid laser for generating radiation includes an optical passive material and an optical active material. The laser includes a first optical waveguide and optical laser components with reflectors in the optical passive material. The first optical waveguide is adapted for coupling out radiation from the hybrid laser. The laser also includes a second optical waveguide defined in the optical active material. The optical laser components include reflectors defining a cavity and furthermore are adapted for providing laser cavity confinement in the first optical waveguide and the second optical waveguide. The second optical waveguide thereby is positioned at least partly over the first optical waveguide so that an evanescent coupling interface is defined between the second optical waveguide and the first optical waveguide and the evanescent coupling interface is positioned within the laser cavity.

Laser light coupling into SOI CMOS photonic integrated circuit

A method for trimming an effective refractive index of optical waveguiding structures made for example in a high refractive index contrast material system. By compaction of cladding material in a compaction area next to patterns or ridges that are formed in the core material for realizing an optical waveguiding structure, the effective index of refraction of the optical waveguiding structure can be trimmed. Thus, the operating wavelength of an optical component comprising such an optical waveguiding structure can be trimmed. An optical waveguide structure thus obtained is also disclosed.
