Methods and devices for detection of micro-organisms present or suspected to be present within a mammalian blood sample are provided. A selective lysis is obtained by incubating the sample in a non-ionic detergent under alkaline conditions.

A method of producing a lenticular device for an autostereoscopic display apparatus includes providing a substrate having a surface which corresponds in shape to a desired surface profile for the array of lenticular elements, and providing an optical layer mixture of an optically birefringent material and a polymer precursor over the substrate surface. The optical layer is exposed to a stimulus for polymerizing the polymer precursor to have at least a polymer surface layer, thereby enclosing the material between the polymerized material and the surface to define lenticular elements. This method allows a simple polymerization process, forming a single layer, to complete the LC cell formation in the desired lenticular array shape.

A method for filtering a sample comprising the steps of: (a) providing a sample with eukaryotic cells and containing or suspected to contain a micro-organism; (b) performing a selective lysis of the eukaryotic cells to obtain a lysed sample; (c) filtering the lysed sample obtained in step (b) through a filter arranged to retain the micro-organism; and (d) washing the filter with a detergent based wash buffer to selectively solubilize proteins originating from the eukaryotic cells retained by the filter, by passing the detergent based wash buffer through the filter, to remove protein clogs from the filter in order to allow an additional step (c) of filtering said lysed sample.

According to an aspect of the present invention, a device for fragmenting molecules in a sample by ultrasound is provided. The device comprises a planar-shaped cartridge and a fragmentation instrument that has a vessel-like shape. By means of applying under-pressure in the fragmentation instrument the cartridge is pulled towards the fragmentation instrument and therefore spatially closes a fluid compartment that is comprised by the fragmentation instrument. Afterwards, an ultrasound treatment of the sample, which is comprised in a sample compartment of the cartridge, may be processed. A sealing layer is provided in between the cartridge and the fragmentation instrument in order to hold the fixation of the cartridge tightly and in order to provide for leakage prevention out of the fluid compartment.

A microfluidic cartridge for placement onto a parallel pneumatic interface plate of a pneumatic instrument is provided. The cartridge includes a three dimensional fluid channel, in which a fluid is to be transported, a flexible membrane that spans a plane and is part of an outer surface of the cartridge. The three dimensional fluid channel is spatially defined in three dimensions by internal walls of the cartridge and by the flexible membrane. The flexible membrane is in a ground state, when no pressure or vacuum is applied to the flexible membrane. However, the flexible membrane is pneumatically deflectable from the ground state perpendicular to the plane of the flexible membrane in two directions when the cartridge is placed onto the parallel pneumatic interface plate.
