A sensor is described for sensing a substance such as for example glucose. The sensor is implantable in the body of a living creature. The sensor comprises a photonic integrated circuit, e.g. silicon-photonics, based radiation processor for spectrally processing radiation interacting with the sample. A continuous monitoring system also is described using such a sensor.

Implantable sensor

The present invention relates to a coupler () for coupling radiation to one optical element. The coupler () comprises a splitter () for splitting a received radiation beam in at least two radiation sub-beams, at least two distinct sub-gratings () adapted for directing radiation sub-beams such that all radiation is coupled out by the coupler into substantially one direction, and a means for guiding () each of the radiation sub-beams between the splitter and a sub-grating ().

Method and system for coupling radiation

A photonic integrated circuit () is described comprising at least one signal processing circuit (). The signal processing circuit () comprises at least one input coupling element () for coupling incident light from a predetermined incoupling direction into the photonic integrated circuit (), and at least one output coupling element () for coupling light out of the photonic integrated circuit () into an outcoupling direction. The relation between the incoupling direction and the outcoupling direction is different from a relation according to the law of reflection and the incoupling direction and the outcoupling direction are substantially the same. Furthermore, an optical sensor probe () comprising such a photonic integrated circuit () is disclosed. In some embodiments, the optical sensor probe () comprises an optical fiber () having a first facet and comprises a sensing element physically attached to the first facet, wherein the sensing element comprises said photonic integrated circuit ().

Retro-reflective structures

An optical device for optically multiplexing or demultiplexing light of different predetermined wavelengths is provided, the optical device comprising at least one first waveguide () and at least one second waveguide () formed on a substrate (), wherein the at least one first waveguide and the at least one second waveguide intersect at an intersection, comprising a diffraction grating structure () formed at the intersection. There exists a first wavelength or wavelength band travelling within the first waveguide () exciting the grating structure and being diffracted an angle corresponding to an outcoupling direction and there exists a second wavelength or wavelength band, different from the first wavelength or wavelength band, travelling within the second waveguide () exciting the grating structure and being diffracted at an angle corresponding to the same outcoupling direction. The two radiation beams comprising radiation of two different wavelengths or wavelength bands are spatially separated into the optical waveguides (and) or combined into single outcoupling direction, e.g. into a single optical element, e.g. a single optical fiber (). An optical device may be used in local access communications such as fiber to the home, office or curb applications.

Method and system for multiplexer waveguide coupling

An optical waveguide to fiber coupler comprises a substrate, a first waveguide and a second waveguide. The first and second waveguides are formed on the substrate and intersect at a right angle. A diffraction grating structure is formed at the intersection of the first and second waveguides, such that, when the coupler is physically abutted with a single mode optical fiber, in operation, a polarization split is obtained that couples orthogonal modes from the single-mode optical fiber into single identical modes in the first and second waveguides. Also, employing the coupler in optical polarization diverse applications provides for implementing a polarization insensitive photonic integrated circuit using such diffraction grating structures, such as, for example, photonic crystals.

Fiber-to-waveguide coupler

Alternative laser structures, which have potentially the same tuning performance as (S)SG-DBR and GCSR lasers, and a fabrication process which is similar to that of the (S)SG-DBR laser, are presented. The advantage of these structures is that the output power does not pass through a long passive region.

A waveguide component has a slab waveguide, a rib waveguide, and a mode transition section where the rib waveguide and the slab waveguide are adjacent, and where the rib waveguide is tapered, to provide optical coupling, and lateral confinement rib waveguides are provided along the slab waveguide in the mode transition section to confine light from spreading laterally. The lateral confinement ribs can be formed in the same step with the same mask as used for the taper, to ensure alignment with the taper. They can be arranged either side of the taper. The lateral confinement ribs are significant for enabling a mode transition section which couples with low loss. In particular, it reduces the need for the taper to be so fine, or the taper to be made in both vertical and horizontal axes, both of which cause fabrication difficulties.

Semiconductor optical component utilizing leaky structures to match the mode of rib waveguides to that of the fiber

A system and method for guiding a beam of electromagnetic radiation is disclosed. The system includes at least a first stack of dielectric layers, the first stack comprising at least a first substack, a second substack and a third substack, the third substack separating said first and second substack, the first substack comprising at least one dielectric layer, the second substack comprises at least one dielectric layer, the third substack comprises at least one dielectric layer. The dielectric layers of the first substack and the second substack equidistant from the third substack have the same refractive index. The sum of the thickness of dielectric layers of the first substack and the second substack equidistant from said third substack is a multiple of half of the vacuum wavelength of the beam divided by the refractive index of the dielectric layers of the first substack and the second substack having a same distance from the third substack, the third substack thickness being substantially different from a quarter of the vacuum wavelength of the beam divided by the refractive index of the one dielectric layer of the third substack.

System for guiding a beam of electromagnetic radiation

An optical decision circuit, based on gain clamped semiconductor optical amplifiers, is disclosed. This optical decision circuit can be used for 2R signal regeneration in optical communication systems. By adding a clock signal to the input of said optical decision circuit, said circuit is also suited for 3R regeneration. Such a circuit can easily be implemented as an integrated circuit or an OEIC.

Optical decision circuit and use thereof

The present invention is related to a system for transferring a beam of electromagnetic radiation having a vacuum wavelength. The system according to the invention includes a first dielectric medium, a second dielectric medium and a dielectric layer in between the first and the second medium. The dielectric layer has a periodicity of the dielectric properties parallel to the layer. The periodicity has a period that is smaller than the wavelength of the electromagnetic radiation in the second dielectric medium.

Optical system with a dielectric subwavelength structure having high reflectivity and polarization selectivity

An integrated tunable optical filter comprising a substrate made of a semiconducting material. The substrate includes first and second sections. The first section forms a tunable transmission filter, based on a codirectional coupler having a low selectivity. The second section forms a reflection filter with a reflection spectrum containing a number of peaks. A first injector, designed for current injection into said first section, is provided. Thus, the filter response of the first section is shifted in wavelength over a large wavelength range. There is also a second injector, designed for current injection into the second section. As a result, the reflective spectrum of the second section is slightly shifted in wavelength, in such a way that one reflection peak of the reflection spectrum corresponds to the coupling wavelength of the first section. Consequently, the total filter response has a very narrow bandwidth and wide tunability.
