In one example, a method includes processing, by a device that includes a camera, an image to generate a bounding box that surrounds a portion of content of the image, the portion of content of the image including at least a portion of a person shown in the image, determining a proximity of the person to the device based on a size of the bounding box, and adjusting a speaker of the device based on the proximity of the person to modify one or more audio characteristics of sound output by the speaker based on the proximity of the person to the device.

A device including a speaker and a housing, in which the speaker is configured to generate sound and includes a diaphragm and the housing encloses the speaker and includes a plurality of openings within one portion of the housing. The speaker is positioned within the housing to define a front chamber between the diaphragm and the one portion, and the plurality of openings are sized to collectively generate, with the front chamber, an increased output of the device within a frequency range of an output of the speaker corresponding to an alarm tone. Also provided are methods for assembling a device including a speaker and a housing.

Aspects of the present disclosure provide a system for selectively outputting indications of important events of which the user would like to be notified. Based, at least in part, on settings configured via user inputs, the system receives an indication of a detected acoustic event and determines whether the acoustic event corresponds an event in a list of preferences stored in a remote server. In response to determining that the events match, the system then instructs a personal audio output device to output an indication of the detected acoustic event to the user of the personal audio output device.
