Apparatus and method for linearizing narrowband carriers with low resolution predistorters are provided. The method includes amplifying, using a power amplifier, one or more broadcast carriers and linearizing, using a predistorter coupled to the power amplifier, the one or more broadcast carriers. The method also includes determining, using an electronic processor, a composite bandwidth of the one or more broadcast carriers and determining, using the electronic processor, whether the composite bandwidth is below a modulation bandwidth of the predistorter. The method further includes controlling, using the electronic processor, a pacification carrier generator coupled to the electronic processor to combine a pacification carrier with the one or more broadcast carriers when the composite bandwidth is below the minimum modulation bandwidth of the predistorter.

Linearizing narrowband carriers with low resolution predistorters

Apparatus and method for reallocation of spectral resources in multiwaveform systems. One embodiment provides a base station operating in a narrowband spectrum and broadband spectrum that share a band allocation of RF spectrum. The base station includes a narrowband transceiver, a broadband transceiver, and an electronic processor coupled to the narrowband transceiver and the broadband transceiver. The electronic processor is configured to determine that a traffic load on the narrowband transceiver is increasing and determine a number of additional carrier channels based on the traffic load to operate the narrowband transceiver within a predefined blocking rate. The electronic processor is also configured to reduce a bandwidth of the broadband transceiver based on the number of additional carrier channels and assign additional carrier channels to the narrowband transceiver to operate the narrowband transceiver with the number of additional carrier channels.

Reallocation of spectral resources in multiwaveform systems

An exemplary system in accordance with some embodiments includes a field-replaceable unit (FRU) and a controller. The FRU may include an FRU Ethernet coupler comprising an FRU return node and an FRU power node. The controller may include a controller Ethernet coupler including a first controller node and a second controller node. The controller may include a comparator and a switch. The controller may be operable to detect whether the FRU is connected to the controller by comparing a voltage at the first controller node to a reference voltage. The controller is also thereby operable to, when the controller Ethernet coupler is connected to the FRU Ethernet coupler with an Ethernet cable, cause current flow from a voltage source to the FRU.

The method includes generating, using a plurality of radio frequency sources, a plurality of radio frequency carrier signals. The method also includes initiating modulation, using a plurality of carrier modulators, of a first subset of the plurality of radio frequency carrier signals with information signals at a first time to generate a plurality of modulated signals and initiating modulation, using the plurality of carrier modulators, of a second subset of the plurality of radio frequency carrier signals with the information signals at a second time to generate the plurality of modulated signals. The second time is a predetermined time offset after the first time. The method also includes transmitting, using one or more antennae, a multi-carrier signal including the plurality of modulated signals.

Multi-carrier crest factor reduction

System and method for efficient operation of power amplifiers in dynamic carrier systems. In one example, the method includes determining a composite RMS power and peak power for a carrier configuration of an RF transmitter, determining a number of active banks of power amplifiers as a function of composite RMS power and peak power, and determining a number of active power amplifiers within a bank of power amplifiers as a function of composite RMS power and peak power. The method also includes activating a first bank of power amplifiers and/or a second bank of power amplifiers based on the determined number of active banks of power amplifiers and activating a subset of a one or more first power amplifiers of the first bank of power amplifiers and a one or more second power amplifiers of the second bank of power amplifiers based on the determined number of active power amplifiers.

Efficient operation of multi-carrier power amplifiers in dynamic carrier systems

A method and base station transmitter for providing offline tuning of a base station transmitter. The base station transmitter includes a feed-forward power amplifier comprising a Radio Frequency (RF) input and an RF output. The base station transmitter also includes a simulated carrier generator operatively coupled to the feed-forward power amplifier prior to the carrier cancellation loop. The simulated carrier generator provides a simulated carrier signal including one or more individual carrier frequencies to the RF input. The base station transmitter also includes a processor that is operatively coupled to the feed-forward power amplifier and the simulated carrier generator. The processor performs tuning of a carrier cancellation loop using the simulated carrier signal when the processor determines that a carrier signal is not present.

Feed-forward power amplifier with offline tuning capability

Apparatus and method for extended operational bandwidth amplifiers with fractional instantaneous bandwidth feed forward correction. In one embodiment, the method includes amplifying a radio frequency (RF) input signal to provide an amplified RF signal and introducing a first delay in the amplified RF signal. The method also includes receiving an error signal of the amplified RF signal and centering a correction bandwidth with respect to the amplified RF signal. The method also includes amplifying the error signal and combining the amplified RF signal and the amplified error signal to reduce an error in the amplified RF signal. The first delay is smaller than a second delay caused by the error path.

Extended operational bandwidth amplifiers with fractional instantaneous bandwidth feed forward correction

Apparatus and method for selective linearization of scalable fault tolerant frequency agile transmitters. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving timestamped carrier configurations and segmenting the timestamped carrier configurations into time segments having a pre-determined time length. The method also includes determining composite carrier configuration in a present time segment for a predetermined number of future time segments and determining a correction solution of a plurality of correction solutions associated with the composite carrier configuration in a mapping of a plurality of carrier configurations and the plurality of correction solutions. The method includes providing the correction solution to a linearizer of at least one of a plurality of multi-carrier power amplifiers. The plurality of power amplifiers are provided in one or more banks of multi-carrier power amplifiers.

Selective linearization of scalable fault tolerant frequency agile transmitters

Apparatus and method for dynamically linearizing multi-carrier power amplifiers. In one example, the method includes storing a correction set including a plurality of correction solutions and loading the correction set into an RF power amplifier linearizer. The method includes determining a first carrier configuration of an RF transmitter during a first timeslot of operation of the RF transmitter and sending a first correction solution index to the RF power amplifier linearizer. The first correction solution index corresponds to a first correction solution of the plurality of correction solutions. The method also includes determining that a carrier configuration change is initiated to operate the RF transmitter with a second carrier configuration during a second timeslot of operation of the RF transmitter and sending a second correction solution index to the RF power amplifier linearizer. The second correction solution index corresponds to a second correction solution of the plurality of correction solutions.

Dynamically linearizing multi-carrier power amplifiers

An apparatus and method are provided for reducing the output voltage in a power amplifier. The power amplifier contains a power supply, an amplifier stage, an impedance matching circuit, and a voltage reduction unit connected between the power supply and the amplifier stage. A power amplifier device within the amplifier stage has a gain bandwidth that covers multiple frequency bands. The output voltage of the power amplifier device is a composite voltage that contains fundamental and harmonic components that lie within the gain bandwidth. The voltage reduction unit reduces the supply voltage of the power amplifier device such that the composite output voltage is less than the breakdown voltage in the power amplifier device. The impedance matching circuit is coupled to the power amplifier device output and provides impedance matching for output signals of the fundamental and harmonic frequencies.

A supply voltage to a power amplifier is controlled. A signal at a single point in a power amplifier is detected. A signal parameter is determined for the detected signal. The signal parameter is compared to at least one predetermined limit. This comparison result is used to determine whether to adjust a supply voltage to the power amplifier. The signal parameter is, for example, an average power or a peak-to-average power ratio.

The power delivery system including a power splitter and at least one sector amplifier that is responsive to the power splitter; where each of the sector amplifiers includes an input switch and an output switch that is responsive to the sector amplifier. The power delivery system also includes a power combiner that is responsive to each of the sector amplifiers; and at least one spare amplifier that is coupled by one or more relays to each of sector amplifiers that operates in conjunction with one or more of the sector amplifiers.
