Method and apparatus for dispersing a volatile composition

An apparatus and method for dispersing a volatile composition, which comprises dispersing the composition into an air stream and generating an ion wind, thereby causing the molecules of the composition to become electrically charged. The composition can be an insect repellent, an insecticide, an anti-microbial, an anti-allergenic or a room-fragrancing composition.

A method of improving the spraying of liquid droplets from a spray device onto a surface which method comprises imparting a unipolar charge to the said liquid droplets by double layer charging during the spraying of the liquid droplets from the spray device, the unipolar charge being at a level such that the said droplets have a charge to mass ratio of at least &plusmn;1&times;10 C/kg, whereby the charged droplets of the liquid are mutually repelled thereby increasing the spread of the droplets from a central spray line extending from the head of the spray device and avoiding coalescence of the droplets, thus providing a more even coverage of the surface which is to be sprayed. In particular, the method enables liquid droplets to be sprayed onto a surface which is obscured by all object located between the surface and the spray device.

A device for dispensing a volatile liquid as a vapor includes a porous support of natural or synthetic woven or non-woven fibre, porous glasses, porous plastics (optionally in film form), parchment, leather or rubber provided with an organopolysiloxane material which serves to close the pores of the support to the passage of liquid but permits the passage of vapour from the liquid. The volatile liquid is a perfume, insecticide, insect repellant, insect attractant, higher animal repellant, corrosion inhibitor, a germicidal agent or a medicament. A space treatment vapor emanating device is thus provided the external surface of which device is dry to the touch.

This invention relates to the foliar feeding of growing plants. Conventional foliar feed comprising plant nutrients dissolved in water have a very poor shelf life and chemically attack many container materials. To overcome this problem the practice is to mix the aqueous solution feed immediately before use. In practice it is necessary to mix more solution than is required and, particularly with small scale applications, there is always a waste of feed. The present invention overcomes this problem by providing an aerosol container charged with a foliar feed solution and a propellant, preferably forming a water in oil emulsion with the solution, and whereby the feed has a relatively long shelf life and can be dispensed in small quantities without wastage.

An ignitable combustible composition comprising a matrix of solid resin having distributed therethrough combustible liquid, e.g. kerosene, water and contains also up to 25% by weight of a particulate non-combustible solid having a specific surface area of not greater than 8 m.sup.2 /g e.g. sand, glass microspheres, or kieselguhr, to lengthen the burning time of a unit volume of the composition.
