A disconnect mechanism is provided which, upon a suitable trigger event, such as excess temperature causes a camming elementhaving a tapered headto move under the urging of a compression springsuch that the tapered headbecomes trapped between a rotating elementand a support. This gives rise to frictional inter-engagement which prevents further rotation of the rotating elementand thereby locks the rotating machine against further rotation. This is turn causes the shear region to fail thereby drivingly disconnecting the machine from its prime mover.

Disconnect mechanism and devices including such a disconnect mechanism

A drive disconnect device is provided in which a drive transfer element () is axially movable with respect to input and output shafts () so as to selectively disconnect them. A collar () is disposed in spaced apart configuration around the drive transfer element so that they do not touch except when the disconnect device is operated to disconnect the drive. When the disconnect operation is initiated, force is provided from a resilient element () to move the drive transfer element.

A pump system is provided where low pressure ( ) and high pressure ( ) pumps are coaxially mounted to receive motive power from a shared drive ( ). The drive shafts are arranged such that one extends within a void in the other and both have shear regions such that, in the event of torque overload, either shaft can shear so as to disconnect the drive to it's associated pump while the other pump and shaft can continue to work.

An overfill prevention valve is provided in the fill line of a tank. The valve is arranged such that the valve is held at a closed position unless an overflow for the tank is open.

A rotary generator comprises a rotor within a stator having end windings, the rotor defining a flow path for cooling fluid which, during rotation of the rotor forms an annular layer in the rotor. A cooling fluid feed means is provided having an inlet which, in use, is positioned within the annular layer of cooling fluid whereby a head of cooling fluid is formed at the inlet. The feed means defines a duct through which the cooling fluid passes by the action of centrifugal force towards an outlet from which cooling fluid is directed onto the end windings. The rotation of the rotor causes the head of fluid at the inlet to reduce with increasing rotational speed thereby effecting control of cooling fluid flow through the feed means as the rotational speed of the rotor increases.
