A carrier strip having a plurality of areas for retaining anatomical pathology specimens may have a backing, a cover coupled to the backing along side regions located along opposite longitudinal edges of the carrier strip and along lateral intermediate regions positioned between each of the plurality of areas for retaining anatomical pathology specimens. The carrier strip may be configured to individually retain each of the anatomical pathology specimens in one of the plurality of areas for retaining anatomical pathology specimens between the backing and the cover. Diagnostic studies of anatomical pathology specimens may be facilitated by distributing a digital copy of an image of the specimen may be to a pathologist. A diagnosis may be received from the pathologist based on the digital image of the specimen.

System and method for anatomical pathology sample handling, storage, and analysis

A device and method for automating the handling and testing of microbiological specimens are provided. A portable specimen collection vehicle (SCV) is provided which comprises a protective housing, a specimen chamber for receiving a biospecimen sample, a plurality of culturing chambers each for receiving a portion of the biospecimen sample and each containing a different culture medium, a system of fluid ducts connecting the specimen chamber to each of the culturing chambers, and an actuator that facilitates flow of portions of the biospecimen sample from the specimen chamber through the system of fluid ducts and into each of the culturing chambers, wherein biological organisms in the biospecimen begin to grow in one or more of the culturing chambers and cultured portions of the biospecimen sample can be withdrawn selectively from the apparatus.

Device and method for automating microbiology processes

A method for automatic evaluation, processing and/or testing of an anatomic pathology specimen is disclosed. The specimen is placed into a primary or secondary container labeled with a unique identification code, placed into a specimen carrier, and the carrier marked with an identification code which uniquely identifies the specimen and, by virtue of the identification code, the evaluation, processing and/or tests to be conducted thereon. The identification code may be in the form of a bar code, an RFID tag or similar device or any other identification that is either human read able, machine readable or electronically transferred. The specimen contained within the specimen container or within the specimen carrier is entered into the anatomic pathology, histology or molecular diagnostics LAS at a receiving station, which reads the identification code.

Method for automatic testing of anatomical laboratory specimens

A computerized method for normalizing the results of clinical laboratory tests to a reference scale includes providing a measured value of a clinically significant parameter, providing a set of patient data, and providing a set of method data, including an indication of a method used by a testing instrument used to measure the measured value. One or more correlation factors are retrieved including a method correlation factor from a computer readable database based on the method data. The method correlation factor corresponds to the method used by the testing instrument used to measure the measured value. A normalized value of the clinically significant parameter is calculated based upon the one or more correlation factors. The normalized value may correspond to a value on the reference scale regardless of the method used by the testing instrument.

Method for normalizing clinical laboratory measurements

A laboratory organizer unit includes an enclosed housing with a storage area containing a plurality of racks for storing specimen containers, the racks movable throughout the storage area to permit access to all of the racks from an opening in the upper end of the storage area. A robotic transfer apparatus is operable to insert and retrieve specimen containers from selected racks in the storage area and move them between the storage area and a buffer area on the housing, as well as between the buffer area and a conveyor located adjacent the housing. The conveyor is of a type which transports specimen carriers having a specimen container therein, and the buffer area includes a rack for intermediate storage of specimen containers. The buffer area thereby permits the transfer apparatus to retrieve and load specimen containers on specimen carriers on the conveyor, while awaiting an appropriate rack to move into position in the storage area.

A method for automatic testing of a laboratory specimen includes the initial step of obtaining a specimen to be tested and placing the specimen in a specimen container. The container is removably mounted in an independent carrier designed to carry an individual specimen through a laboratory to one or more of a plurality of work stations, where a predetermined test will be performed on the specimen. Once the test has been performed, the carrier is moved to another work station based on the result of the first test and then to an archiving station for storage of the specimen.

An elevator for specimen carriers includes an upper housing which is removably connected to an upstream end of an upper conveyor track and a lower housing which is removably connected to a downstream end of a lower conveyor track, the conveyor tracks being vertically spaced. Each conveyor track has a moving support surface which transports a specimen carrier downstream. The elevator includes a pair of opposingly disposed lift pins operably mounted along a chain housed within the elevator, the lift pins located to engage opposingly disposed wings on each specimen carrier, to lift the specimen carrier from the lower track to the upper track. The elevator housings are adjustably connected together, to permit adjustment of the overall height of the elevator for a variety of vertically spaced tracks.

The method for automatic testing of a laboratory specimen of the present invention includes the initial step of obtaining a specimen to be tested and placing the specimen in a specimen container. Information regarding the specimen and any tests to be conducted thereon is entered into a computerized laboratory information system (LIS) which is connected to and communicates with a laboratory automation system (LAS) software. The specimen container is inserted in a specimen carrier, and the carrier marked with an identification code which uniquely identifies the specimen and, by virtue of the identification code, the tests to be conducted thereon. The specimen contained within the specimen carrier is entered into the LAS at a receiving station, which reads the identification code and thereby determines:

A specimen carrier is designed for transporting specimen tubes throughout an automatic laboratory conveyance system. The specimen carrier includes a generally rectilinear carrier body with a forward face having an identification zone delimited thereon. An identification code is marked in the identification zone so as to permit mechanical sensing and identification of the carrier on a conveyor system. A plurality of holes of various diameters and depths are provided in the top surface of the carrier to receive specimen tubes of various types. The deepest holes are located centrally, so that the carrier is stable while retaining specimens therein. A groove is formed in the top surface of the carrier body which extends between the specimen tube holes, so as to communicate any fluid spilling from a test tube to the other empty holes in the specimen carrier, thereby retaining the fluid within the body of the carrier. A special vertical slot is provided in one of the vertical holes, utilizing a pair of opposing vertical channels, so as to retain a specimen slide in the specimen carrier.

Elevator and speciman carrier for automated conveyor system

A central control apparatus for an automated laboratory conveyor system includes a conveyor track arranged in a closed loop to continuously transport a specimen carrier having a laboratory specimen therein. A receiving station is provided along the track which is connected to a laboratory information system having identification and instructional data with respect to a particular specimen, and which marks an individual specimen carrier to identify the carrier with a particular specimen as it is conveyed throughout the conveyor system. The receiving station and an archiving station are both connected to a central control unit which is connected to the conveyor track and the laboratory information system to control the entire automated laboratory conveyor system. At least one work station is located along the conveyor track for performing a predetermined test on a particular specimen. Each work station includes a gate apparatus for transferring the selected specimen carrier from the conveyor track to a work station track, for transport to a work station. The gate apparatus includes a reader for identifying a particular specimen carrier being conveyed by the conveyor track. The reader is also connected to the central control unit, as are the gates for each work station, so that particular specimens may be directed to an appropriate work station by the central control unit.

Central control apparatus for an automated laboratory conveyor system

The enunciator system for an AGV includes a transmitter mounted on the AGV connected to an electrical control circuit having a plurality of individual switches operable to cause the transmitter to transmit a specific signal upon arrival of the AGV at predetermined locations along a circuitous route. Each location along the AGV route has identifier markings detectable by the AGV such that the AGV will stop for a predetermined period of time at each location as it travels along its route. If a switch for a specific location is actuated, the transmitter will transmit a signal to a receiver at that location which then triggers an audio or visual alarm at the location to alert a person at the location as to the arrival of an item on the AGV. After a predetermined period of time, the alarm will cease and the AGV will continue along its circuitous route. If the item is not removed from the AGV at the specified location, the AGV will continue along with the route until it arrives once again at the specified location at which time it will again trigger the alarm at that location, Because each specific location has its own independent receiver to receive an independent signal from the transmitter, more than one location may be specified for different items without triggering the alarms of undesignated locations.
