A fluid filtration system comprising a cross-flow filter is arranged to permit a first pump to recirculate part of the retentate of the filter to the inlet of the cross-flow filter and a second pump to return part of the permeate to the inlet of the cross-flow filter. A third pump is configured supply source fluid to the inlet of the filter. The flow path between the second pump and the cross-flow filter inlet may include an adsorption filter that may selectively remove contaminants, toxins, or pathogens in the permeate. A controller may control the first, second and third pumps to provide predetermined flow ratios among the fluid flow paths of the system in order to achieve a desired filtration level. This system may be applicable to the removal of harmful substances from blood, by first separating the plasma from the blood and then removing harmful substances from the plasma.

Recirculating fluid filtration system

Systems and methods for providing for the automatic instrument-based rapid reprocessing of an intact extracorporeal circuit for use in hemodialysis. The system includes a manifold with connectors for engaging a dialyzer as well as venous and arterial blood lines. The manifold is adapted to be moved from a dialysis machine to a reuse instrument without removing the dialyzer and associated blood lines. The system allows for reprocessing of the extracorporeal circuit wherein prior to the next treatment, there is no residual chemical disinfectant requiring testing, the extracorporeal circuit is pre-primed, the levels in the bubble traps are set, and all of the required quality assurance tests are performed and recorded.

Devices, systems, and methods for cleaning, disinfecting, rinsing, and priming blood separation devices and associated fluid lines

A device for occluding a flexible tube comprising a first body frictionally connected to a second body by a spring-loaded clip. A flexible tube having a first end and a second end is secured in a bent position to each body by a plurality of clamps. When the two bodies are separated by a predetermined threshold force acting axially on either the first end or second end of the tube so as to cause the bent section of tubing to straighten, the spring-load clip occludes the tube secured by the second body.

Devices and methods for occluding a flexible tube

A device and method to constrict or occlude the lumen of a flexible tube may include an occluder under the influence of an elastic force, such as a spring force, that can compress a portion of the wall of the flexible tube. The occluder can be under the influence of the elastic force, but prevented from occluding the tube by a stop. The stop can be connected to a tube gripping feature, so that a pulling force on the tube near the gripping feature can disengage the stop from the occluder, releasing the occluder to compress the tube. In some embodiments, the pulling force applied to the tube causes movement of the gripping feature by taking up slack in a portion of the tube held in the device. In other embodiments, the pulling force applied to the tube causes the tube to stretch elastically near the gripping feature, causing the gripping feature to move, and disengaging the stop from the occluder.

A method of disinfection of a dead-ended fluid line in a medical instrument such as a dialysis machine is described. The method comprises introducing a heated fluid into the fluid line, allowing the fluid to remain in the line for an experimentally determined optimal dwell period, removing the fluid from the fluid line, and then repeating the cycle for a time period sufficient to achieve a disinfection of the fluid line. The optimum dwell period and frequency for exchanging the heated fluid is determined so that the heated fluid is left resident in the line to exert a cidal effect but not so long that the it cools to the point of being ineffective, nor changed so frequently that that the time spent with no hot water resident in the line begins to detract (e.g., unduly prolong) the disinfection process. A representative cycle is introducing water at a temperature of about 85 degrees C, allowing it to reside in the fluid line for about 10 seconds, withdrawing the water, and then reintroducing water at 85 degrees C. The process continues for 1-2 hours. Variation from the representative cycle will be expected based on parameters such as the degree to which disinfection is to be achieved, the length and diameter of the fluid line, the temperature of the fluid, the ambient temperature, the presence of elements in the fluid line that contribute to heat loss, the material used for fluid line tubing, and whether the fluid comprises water or a disinfection solution such as a dilute citric acid solution. The optimum dwell period and frequency of the cycles can be determined experimentally from the teachings described herein.

Disinfection of dead-ended lines in medical instruments

A user interface for a medical instrument such as a dialysis machine is described which uses both a touch screen and at least one hard key off of the touch screen to effectuate a change in a parameter associated with the operation of the machine or the treatment session. The user interface is connected to a central computer control system having a host microprocessor and a backup safety microprocessor. The hard key is directly wired to the safety microprocessor. After the user selects a new parametric value on the touch screen, the user presses a hard key. The host and safety microprocessors implement a verification routine to insure that the entered parameter is appropriate for the patient's treatment and the display on the touch screen. If the verification procedure ends in a positive result, the user is prompted to presses a second hard key to confirm the change, causing an additional verification check to be preformed. If the additional verification check is successful, the parametric value is entered into a memory (such as a hard disk) storing instructions for operation of the medical instrument.

User interface and method for control of medical instruments, such as

A method for flushing and filling of an extracorporeal blood circulation system of a dialysis machine is disclosed. The machine has a dialyzer, a separate dialysis liquid circuit flowing through a dialysate side of the dialyzer with the extracorporeal blood circulation system flowing through a blood side of the dialyzer for removal of impurities from the blood and the dialysate and blood sides of the dialyzer separated by a hemodialyzer membrane. The method comprises the steps of transporting dialysis liquid from the dialysis liquid circuit in the dialysate side of the dialyzer through the hemodialyzer membrane into the blood side of the dialyzer and the extracorporeal blood circulation system to flush and fill the system and conducting a dialysis treatment.

Method for flushing and filling of an extracorporeal blood circulation

Several tests are described for verifying the integrity of the extracorporeal circuit of a medical instrument, such as a dialysis machine. One test verifies the condition of the blood tubing set. Another test verifies that the clamps in the arterial and venous lines adequately occlude the arterial and venous lines. Another test confirms that the arterial and venous lines are properly installed on their respective ports for receiving the lines after the treatment session has ended. In this last test, a fluid such as heated water is then introduced into one of the arterial or venous lines and sent out of the line through its respective port, where it is detected with suitable fluid detection equipment such as a thermistor. The heated fluid and thermistor verify that the arterial line is connected to its arterial port and the venous line is connected to its venous port and that there is an unobstructed fluid path in the blood tubing set. If the lines are installed on the wrong port, the user is prompted to correctly install the arterial and venous lines on their respective ports.

Blood tubing set integrity tests for extracorporeal circuits

A method for withdrawing priming fluid from the extracorporeal circuit of a dialysis machine is described which substantially prevents return of the priming fluid back to the patient. In accordance with the method, priming fluid is drawn from the extracorporeal circuit through the dialyzer membrane and into the dialysate circuit. Blood is introduced into the extracorporeal circuit as the priming fluid is withdrawn through the dialyzer. Withdrawal of the priming fluid may be accomplished by pumping the blood pump in the forward direction at a first rate and operating a pump in the dialysate circuit at a second rate. Valves in the dialysate circuit are operated such that the pump in the dialysate circuit draws priming fluid across the dialyzer membrane into the dialysate circuit, and thereby prevents the priming fluid from being returned to the patient. In a preferred embodiment, the fluid volumes of the arterial and venous portions of the extracorporeal circuit, and the fluid volume of the blood side of the dialyzer, are known in advance. With this information, it is possible to operate the blood and dialysate pumps such that the blood progresses into the arterial and venous lines at different rates such that blood reaches the dialyzer via both lines at about the same time, while at the same time the priming fluid is withdrawn through the dialyzer. Thus, in this embodiment, blood fills the extracorporeal circuit after priming with only a small amount of priming fluid remaining in the blood compartment of the dialyzer being returned to the patient.

Withdrawal of priming fluid from extracorporeal circuit of hemodialysis

A method for raising or lowering the fluid level in a chamber in an extracorporeal circuit of a dialysis machine, such as an air trap or compliance chamber, is provided which uses a touch screen. The user of the machine is prompted to indicate on the touch screen the current or actual level of fluid (e.g., blood) in the drip chamber. The user then touches the touch screen to indicate the level, such as by touching an illustration of the chamber at a level corresponding to the actual level. The control system for the machine determines from the level indicated on the touch screen whether the level in the chamber needs to be raised or lowered, and by how much, and responsively operates chamber level adjustment apparatus (such as pressure adjustment apparatus in air communication with the chamber) to raise or lower the level closer to the proper level.
