One of the methods includes receiving a free text query; generating a travel query from the free text query, wherein the travel query expressly specifies an origin location, a destination location, and a departure date, wherein each of the origin location, the destination location, and the departure date are expressly identified as such in the travel query; and submitting the travel query to a travel search engine. Optionally the method includes obtaining user information about a user associated with the free text query, obtaining popular travel information, and deriving origin or destination locations, or departure or return dates from the free text query, the user information, and the popular-travel information.

Generating travel queries in response to free-text search queries

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for presenting graphical user interfaces comprising multiple components interrelated such that inputs received in one component of a graphical user interface render automatic and corresponding updates for another component of the graphical user interface. In one aspect, a method includes the actions of presenting a graphical user interface; and receiving user input of one or more parameters, the graphical user interface including a calendar portion and an associated graphical portion, the calendar portion comprising a date box for each date in a range of dates, and the graphical portion specifying non-date parameters for trips beginning on each date of the range of dates. A change in the calendar portion of the graphical user interface automatically renders a corresponding change in the graphical portion of the graphical user interface.

Generating travel queries in response to free text queries

A user interface for presenting travel itineraries to a user includes an itinerary region for displaying travel itineraries and a filter region. Each travel itinerary has a corresponding value for a first travel criterion and the travel itineraries are grouped into categories based on the values of the first travel criterion. The filter region includes a plurality of cells, each of which is associated with one of the categories of travel itineraries. When a user selects a cell, the itinerary region displays only travel itineraries in the category associated with the selected cell.

Techniques, for automatically determining frequent traveler award redemptions by rule are disclosed. The frequent travel award redemption program is encoded in rules using predefined data structures based on fare by rule data structures. The techniques automatically determine a travel itinerary based on a query and the rules. Also included is a graphical user interface that displays a plurality of possible travel options for redemption using a frequent travel award. The rules include fields to determine co-pay options and for calculating mileage purchase options.
