A burner tube and door assembly for a water heater includes a burner tube and a fuel supply line in telescoping relationship to define a tube junction. The tube junction extends through the door of a water heater. One of the tube and line includes an enlarged portion. A lock ring applies a radially-directed force around a portion of the tube junction. The enlarged portion and lock ring are on opposite sides of the door to secure the door to the burner tube and fuel supply line. The enlarged portion and lock ring apply a compressive load to the door to resist rotation of the door with respect to the tube junction.

Water heater burner tube and door assembly

A water heater door assembly includes a base plate sized and shaped to substantially sealingly cover an access opening in a water heater combustion chamber and has at least one opening through which a fuel supply line extends at least partly between a burner in the combustion chamber and a gas control valve, and a flexible seal positioned at least partly within the opening including an engaging portion substantially sealed to an edge portion of the opening, and a through hole that is shaped to receive the fuel supply and has a size slightly smaller than the size of an outer dimension of the fuel supply line such that the flexible seal and the fuel supply line are friction fit together to form a seal.

The body extends along the longitudinal axis from the first end to the second end. The first head includes multiple landings. The first head is coupled to the first end so that the first head is convex and extends away from the body. The longitudinally outermost points of the landings define a first plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. The second head includes multiple landings. The second head is identical to the first head except for at least one opening through a landing. The second head is coupled to the second end so that the second head is convex and extends away from the body. The longitudinally outermost points of the landings define a second plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

A method of making a circular support base for a water heater in which a sheet of material having two ends is formed with corrugations such that the corrugations are progressively more pronounced towards one longitudinal edge thereby creating a generally circular shape out of the formerly straight sheet material, the two ends are connected to form an unbroken circular shape, the corrugated material is shaped to form a lip at an inner circumferential region, and the circular lip intersects with an outer circumferential region of the support base to form a circular trough for supporting and positioning a water tank of the water heater.

The water heater includes a water tank adapted to contain water to be heated, a combustion chamber positioned proximate the water tank, a combustor positioned in the combustion chamber and operable to create products of combustion, a passage extending upwardly from the combustion chamber and through the water tank, the passage having an upper portion comprising an inner tube and an outer tube and a lower portion comprising an inner tube and an outer tube, and a transition element positioned in the passage and configured to direct supply air from the outer tube of the upper portion to the inner tube of the lower portion and deliver hot products of combustion from the outer tube of the lower portion to the inner tube of the upper portion, the transition element maintaining separation of the supply air and the products of combustion.

Transition element for a passage in a water heater

A support base is provided for a water heater, the support base having a structure for supporting components of the water heater in their proper position in a manner that elevates an outer jacket of the heater and provides space for insulation between the outer jacket and an inner water tank. The support base comprises a lip at one end of the support base, an angled middle portion projecting upwardly from the lip such that the lip and the angled middle portion intersect to form a trough for positioning and supporting the water tank. The support base also has a top portion extending in a generally vertical direction from an upper end of the angled middle portion such that the top portion provides support for the outer jacket.

A dam assembly to protect a component mounted on a water heater tank wall while insulating foam is injected between the tank and a jacket surrounding the tank, the dam assembly comprising an outer portion, an inner portion, and a frangible web connecting the inner and outer portions, the web having a strength sufficient to withstand force applied to the inner portion to press the dam assembly into an aperture in the jacket such that the outer portion surrounds the component between the tank and the jacket, and the web breaking under the application of a pre-determined force on the inner portion, allowing the inner portion to be at least partially pushed inside the outer portion to enclose the component within the dam assembly.

Foam dam

A tank connector assembly including a metal spud member having an internally threaded portion and a cylindrical wall portion. An insert member of polymer material having a cylindrical wall portion. The insert member is mounted inside the cylindrical wall portion of the spud member. A bonding member of polymer material fits the cylindrical wall portion of said bonding member positioned between the external surface of the cylindrical wall portion of the insert member and the internal surface of the cylindrical wall portion of the spud member. The cylindrical wall portion of said bonding member being securely bonded to both the insert member and the spud member. In a preferred embodiment, the polymer material of the bonding member is malcated olefin. The bonding of the cylindrical wall portion of the bonding member to the polymer insert and the steel spud will prevent or at least substantially reduce any tendency of the water in the tank to leak past the outer surface of the insert member which, in turn, prevents water from coming into contact with the wall of the steel tank. Such contact if allowed to occur may cause corrosion of the steel tank. The bond between the outer surface of the cylindrical wall of the bonding member and the steel spud prevents water from coming into contact with the steel spud to thus prevent corrosion of the spud.

Tank connector construction

A tank connector construction comprised of an outer shell of metal material and an inner shell of polymer material mounted inside the outer shell. A metal connector member having a tubular wall and a welding projection at one end thereof is provided with the welding projection of said metal connector member welded to the outer shell of metal material. An insert member of polymer material is mounted in one end of the metal connector member with the insert member fused to the inner shell of the tank. A connector sleeve member is mounted inside the tubular wall of the metal connector member. A connector sleeve member has an internally threaded tubular wall portion and is made of a polymer material having 'low creep' characteristics. In the preferred embodiment, the polymer material of the connector sleeve member is a polyamide material.

Tank and tank connector assembly

The method of fabricating a tank connector assembly comprising the steps of first providing a metal spud member having an internally threaded portion and a cylindrical wall portion. Mounting an insert member of polymer material inside the cylindrical wall portion of the spud member, the insert member having a cylindrical wall portion. Positioning a bonding member between the cylindrical wall of the spud and the cylindrical wall of the insert member. Applying heat to the spud insert member and bonding member to cause the material of the bonding member to become bonded to the spud wall and the insert wall. In a preferred embodiment, the polymer material of the bonding member is maleated olefin. The metal spud member is welded in an opening in the wall of a steel tank. A polymer material is introduced into the interior of the steel tank and the tank is then subjected to a rotational casting movement in the presence of heat to cause the polymer material in the tank to be uniformly distributed over the internal surface of the tank. The heat applied during the rotational casting step serves to cause the bonding member to become bonded to the spud and insert member.

Method of fabricating a tank and method of fabricating a tank connector

A dual element comprises two electrical heating elements of different ratings. Each heating element has first and second terminals. The second terminals of the two heating elements are secured to a common clip, which is wired into an appropriate electrical circuit. The heating element first terminals are secured to respective clips. A second wire of the circuit is connected to a selected one of the first terminal clips, thereby determining the power rating of the dual element. A jumper is provided that is selectively installable between the two first terminal clips. With the jumper installed, the second wire may be connected to either of the first terminal clips to thereby place the two heating elements in parallel. The rating of the dual element is then the sum of the ratings of the two individual heating elements. In that manner, the dual element is operable at three different ratings.

A water heater including a water tight tank and a source of heat for heating water inside the tank. A hot water outlet is located in the top of the tank. An inlet agitator tube is mounted in the tank. The tube includes a straight vertical portion, a first curved portion lying in a vertical plane and a second curved portion lying in a horizontal plane adjacent the bottom of the tank. The second curved portion has a plurality of openings in the underside thereof through which streams of water will be directed into the tank each time water is drawn out of the top of the tank, said streams of water serving to agitate the water in the bottom of the tank to prevent accumulation of sediment therein.
