The hemodialysis system includes a closed loop dialysate flow path which includes a dialyzer and a reservoir for storing dialysate, and a closed loop blood flow path which passes through the dialyzer in the opposite direction as the dialysate flow path. In addition, the hemodialysis system includes pumps for pumping dialysate and blood through their respective flow paths, a flow sensor for measuring the flow rate of dialysate in the dialysate flow path, and a level sensor for measuring the level of dialysate in the dialysate reservoir. A processor is connected to the flow sensor, reservoir level sensor and pumps to provide a first closed loop control system including the processor, flow sensor and a first dialysate pump, and a second closed loop control system including the processor, level sensor and a second dialysate pump which enable the processor to initiate, monitor and maintain ultrafiltration.

The disposable cartridge includes a dialyzer, and a dialysate flow path and a blood flow path which flow in opposing directions through the dialyzer. The processor is connected to the light source for determining whether blood has leaked from the blood flow path into the dialysate flow path. Preferably, the light source emits light having two peak wavelengths.

Preferably, the filter has a vapor membrane for releasing gases including ammonia, but not liquids such as the dialysate. The reused dialysis machine possesses a reservoir for dialysate, an ammonia sensor adjacent to the vapor membrane, a level sensor, a blood leak sensor, a venous blood line pressure sensor, a venous blood line bubble detector, pump motors, and a processor connected to the motors and sensors for controlling and monitoring hemodialysis treatment.

A portable hemodialysis system is provided including a disposable cartridge and a reused dialysis machine. The disposable cartridge includes a dialysate flow path and a blood flow path which flow in opposite directions through a dialyzer. The preferred flow sensor includes a rotatable spoked wheel in the dialysate flow path which is rotated by the flow of dialysate. The flow sensor further includes a magnetic field sensor in the reused dialysis machine which is connected to a processor for monitoring the rotation of the spoked wheel to determine flow of fluid in the dialysate flow path.

System, apparatus and method for providing corrective sensor outputs, particularly when a sensor is subject to gravitational or acceleration effects. A sensor and accelerometer may be operatively coupled to a processor, wherein the processor receives inputs from both. The processor receives the sensor signals and determines the gravitational or acceleration effects on the sensor from the accelerometer signals. Based on these, the processor determines a correction factor that is applied to the sensor signals to provide improved and more accurate sensor outputs.

System, apparatus and method for capacitive sensing, where a sensor includes an upper and lower housing, each respectively equipped with upper and lower pressure ports. The lower housing is electrically coupled to an active shield. An insulating material is provided on or near a conductive diaphragm for insulating the conductive diaphragm from the lower housing. The insulating material may be an insulator or a dielectric material, where a sensing electrode is positioned such that the sensing electrode extends laterally across at least a portion of the insulating material, and is separated from the insulating material by a predetermined distance to form an air gap.

The pump actuators having non-deformable components including a housing having a central cavity forming an internal sidewall, a rotor eccentrically positioned within the cavity having radially aligned slots at the rotor's periphery, and vanes slideably positioned in the slots to slide in and out of the slots so as to seal with the cavity's internal sidewall creating vane chambers that pump blood or dialysate.

A battery pack system may include a battery pack and a battery pack holder. The battery pack holder receives the battery pack and couples a battery pack terminal to a load associated with the battery pack holder. The battery pack includes an operation handle external to a battery pack housing. The operation handle is coupled to an operation member via an operation shaft that passes through the housing. A safety circuit of the battery pack couples power supplied by a battery to battery pack terminals based upon position of the operation handle. An operation member of the battery pack extends a locking member into an opening of the battery pack holder when the operation handle is in the engaged position, and retracts the locking member from the opening when the operation handle is in the disengaged position.
