Dual coated erosion resistant metal or ceramic structures are provided having an interior adherent indicating metallic or ceramic layer containing a UV sensitive phosphor and an exterior ceramic or metallic protective coating. A method of making such dual coated structures also is provided involving the plasma or flame spraying of blends of particulated metal powder or metal oxide powder and a metal oxide UV sensitive phosphor onto the surface of the metal or ceramic structure.

Zirconium-base alloy channels, fuel cladding tubes and other components are made resistant to accelerated pustular corrosion in a boiling water reactor environment by coating them with a small amount of a suitable electronically conducting material.

Corrosion resistant zirconium alloy structural components and process

A small amount of lanthanum and praseodymium will substantially improve the slow strain rate ductility of certain zirconium-base alloys and these new alloys and certain other zirconium-base alloys in the irradiated condition can under certain circumstances have surprising load-carrying capacity and service life. Such other alloys contain yttrium or calcium instead of lanthanum or praseodymium.

Zirconium-base alloy structural component for nuclear reactor and method

Tapered stainless steel spool pieces are welded to the ends of stainless steel pipe lengths at the factory to provide subassemblies which are then annealed and thereafter in the field are positioned with the larger free ends of opposed spool pieces disposed to receive weld metal uniting the subassemblies while coolant liquid is maintained in contact with the inside surfaces of the spool pieces.

The stress corrosion tendency of a welded pipe in service in a nuclear reactor water line is reduced by applying to the outside of the pipe a secondary weld bridging the primary weld of the joint beyond the axial extremities of the primary weld heat affected zone and particularly that part of the zone at the inner surface of the pipe.
