A variable compression ratio (VCR) phaser configured to control a compression ratio of an engine having a crankshaft and a control shaft. The variable compress ratio phaser comprises: i) a control shaft gear configured to mesh with a gear on the control shaft of the engine and to receive torque from the control shaft; ii) a crankshaft gear configured to mesh with a gear on the crankshaft of the engine and to deliver torque to the crankshaft; and iii) a torque conversion mechanism configured to receive torque from the control shaft and to convert the torque to a linear force that changes the compression ratio of the engine.

Torque-actuated variable compression ratio phaser

An engine assembly includes a crankshaft, a control shaft, a drive gear fixed to the crankshaft, a carrier, a first planetary gear set, an actuator, and a second planetary gear set. The first planetary gear set includes a first sun gear fixed to ground, a first ring gear engaged with the drive gear, and a first planet gear rotatably mounted on the carrier and engaged with the first ring gear and the first sun gear. The second planetary gear set includes a second sun gear fixed to the actuator, a second ring gear coupled with the control shaft, and a second planet gear rotatably mounted on the carrier and engaged with the second ring gear and the second sun gear. The actuator is operable to rotate the second sun gear and thereby adjust a ratio of a rotational speed of the crankshaft to a rotational speed of the control shaft.

A internal combustion engine comprises an engine block defining a cylinder bore, and a piston slideably supported within the cylinder bore. The piston slides reciprocally within the cylinder bore throughout an engine cycle through a piston compression stroke having a compression stroke length and a piston expansion stroke having an expansion stroke length. A crankshaft is rotatably supported by the engine block and rotatable about a crank axis, and a drive gear is co-axially mounted on the crankshaft. A control shaft is rotatably supported by the engine block and rotatable about a control axis that is parallel to and distal from the crank axis. A driven gear is coaxially mounted on the control shaft. A link rod is rotatably connected to the crankshaft and rotatable relative to the crankshaft about an axis that is parallel to and distal from the crank axis. A lower connecting rod has a first end rotatably connected to the link rod, and a second end rotatably connected to the control shaft and is rotatable relative to the control shaft about an axis that is parallel to and distal from the control axis, and an upper connecting rod has a first end rotatably connected to the link rod, and a second end rotatably connected to the piston. A phasing device is supported by the engine block between and interconnecting the crankshaft and the control shaft, and includes an idler shaft rotatable about a phase axis, an electric motor adapted to rotate the idler shaft, a gearbox mounted co-axially on the idler shaft, a crank gear supported on the gearbox co-axial to the idler shaft, and a control shaft gear mounted co-axially on the idler shaft distal from the crank gear. The drive gear engages the crank gear and transfers rotation of the crank shaft to the idler shaft, and the driven gear engages the control shaft gear and transfers rotation of the idler shaft to the control shaft, and when the electric motor rotates the idler shaft, the gearbox is adapted to allow the rotational speed of the idler shaft to change relative to the rotational speed of the crank shaft to change the rotational speed of the control shaft relative to the crankshaft and change the clearance volume.

Variable compression ratio engine

An engine assembly includes a cylinder head having an intake side and an exhaust side opposite the intake side. The cylinder head has an intake port, an exhaust port, and a combustion chamber in fluid communication with the intake port and the exhaust port. The engine assembly further includes a port fuel injector coupled to the cylinder head. The port fuel injector is disposed closer to the exhaust side than to the intake side of the cylinder head. Further, the port fuel injector is fluid communication with the intake port to allow fuel to be injected directly into the intake port. The engine assembly further includes a direct fuel injector coupled to the cylinder head. The direct injector is in fluid communication with the combustion chamber to allow fuel to be injected directly into the combustion chamber.

Engine assembly

An assembly such as a piston assembly for an engine includes a piston pin that has an outer member and a core. The outer member has a cavity extending lengthwise therethrough. The cavity has a first volume. The core is fit to the outer member in the cavity, and has a second volume less than the first volume. For example, the second volume may be less than the first volume because the core has an opening, because the core is shorter in length than the cavity, or both. A method of manufacturing a piston pin includes providing an outer member having a first density and a first length, creating a cavity that extends lengthwise through the outer member, providing a core having a second density and a second length, and inserting the core into the cavity of the outer member.

An engine assembly includes an intake assembly, a spark-ignited internal combustion engine, and an exhaust assembly. The intake assembly includes a charge air cooler disposed between an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) mixer and a backpressure valve. The charge air cooler has both an inlet and an outlet, and the back pressure valve is configured to maintain a minimum pressure difference between the inlet of the charge air cooler and an outlet of the backpressure valve. A dedicated exhaust gas recirculation system is provided in fluid communication with at least one cylinder and with the EGR mixer. The dedicated exhaust gas recirculation system is configured to route all of the exhaust gas from the at least one cylinder to the EGR mixer for recirculation back to the engine.

Engine with pulse-suppressed dedicated exhaust gas recirculation

A partially integrated manifold assembly is disclosed which improves performance, reduces cost and provides efficient packaging of engine components. The partially integrated manifold assembly includes a first leg extending from a first port and terminating at a mounting flange for an exhaust gas control valve. Multiple additional legs (depending on the total number of cylinders) are integrally formed with the cylinder head assembly and extend from the ports of the associated cylinder and terminate at an exit port flange. These additional legs are longer than the first leg such that the exit port flange is spaced apart from the mounting flange. This configuration provides increased packaging space adjacent the first leg for any valving that may be required to control the direction and destination of exhaust flow in recirculation to an EGR valve or downstream to a catalytic converter.

Partially integrated exhaust manifold

An internal combustion engine comprises a compressor disposed in an intake system configured to compress combustion air and deliver it to cylinders of the engine. A compressor inlet assembly has a combustion air inlet, in fluid communication with, and configured to receive combustion air from the intake system. A combustion air passage extends through the assembly to an outlet located downstream of the inlet and is configured for fluid communication with the compressor. An EGR mixing conduit is disposed within the compressor inlet assembly and has an EGR inlet configured for fluid communication with, and receipt of EGR from, an EGR supply conduit. An EGR passage extends from the EGR inlet to an EGR supply annulus disposed about the combustion air inlet opening and a plurality of EGR ports extend between the EGR supply annulus and the combustion air passage for delivery of EGR thereto.

Internal combustion engine

An engine assembly includes an engine block having a first bank defining a first cylinder bore and a second bank defining a second cylinder bore. A first cylinder head is coupled to the first bank and defines first and second ports in communication with the first cylinder bore. A second cylinder head is coupled to the second bank and defines a third port in communication with the second cylinder bore. A first valve is located in the first port and engaged with a first valve lift mechanism, a second valve is located in the second port and engaged with a second valve lift mechanism, and a third valve is located in the third port and engaged with a third valve lift mechanism. A first camshaft is engaged with the first and third valve lift mechanisms and a second camshaft is engaged with the second valve lift mechanism.

A turbocharger assembly for an internal combustion engine includes a bypass valve for controlling a flow of exhaust gas from a second group of exhaust ports of a cylinder head assembly. When disposed in an open position, the bypass valve allows exhaust gas from the second group of exhaust ports to combine with exhaust gas from a first group of exhaust ports to spin a turbine of the turbocharger assembly. When disposed in a closed position, the bypass valve forces the exhaust gas from the second group of exhaust ports through an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) passage to an intake manifold to establish a dedicated EGR system.

An engine assembly may include an engine structure, a first camshaft housing assembly and a first camshaft assembly. The first camshaft housing assembly may be supported by the engine structure and have a first portion providing a first plurality of bearing support surfaces on a first side and a second portion coupled to the first portion and providing a second plurality of bearing support surfaces on a second side opposite the first side. The first camshaft assembly may be rotationally supported by the first camshaft housing assembly and arranged between the first portion and second portion.

In one exemplary embodiment of an exhaust system, the system includes an exhaust manifold in fluid communication with an internal combustion engine and a forced induction device in fluid communication with the exhaust manifold, the forced induction device including a housing. The system further includes a flow control device to control fluid communication between the forced induction device and a catalyst substrate and to control fluid communication between the exhaust manifold and the catalyst substrate.

Forced induction and exhaust system

An intake manifold assembly for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle includes a plenum, a plurality of lower runners coupled to and in fluid communication with the plenum, and a plurality of upper runners. Each of the upper runners is coupled to and in fluid communication with one of the lower runners. The plurality of upper runners includes a single dedicated upper EGR runner configured for supplying combustion air to at least two dedicated EGR cylinders. A primary throttle body is coupled to the plenum and configured for regulating a flow rate of compressed combustion air through the plenum. An EGR throttle body is coupled to the dedicated upper EGR runner and configured for regulating a flow rate of the compressed combustion air through the dedicated upper EGR runner to control the flow rate of the compressed combustion air to the dedicated EGR cylinders.

A camshaft assembly may include a monolithic camshaft body, a journal member and a thrust ring. The monolithic camshaft body may define lobes and journal regions along an axial extent thereof. The journal member may be separate from and fixed to an axial end of the camshaft body adjacent an end lobe of the camshaft body. The thrust ring may be axially secured to the camshaft assembly at the axial end of the camshaft body.

Multipiece camshaft assembly

A cylinder head including a dam defining a reservoir surrounding the periphery of the fuel pump tappet/roller follower mounting hole is provided. The cylinder head includes a tappet/roller follower mounted in the tappet/roller follower mounting hole and in communication with a cam and a fuel pump. The fuel pump is located on the high side of the head and oil drainage occurs in a direction away from the mounting hole. The dam and reservoir are configured to retain lubricant in the mounting hole and the sliding interface between the mounting hole and the tappet/roller follower. The dam and reservoir are configured to retain a minimum level of oil in the mounting hole when the head is in vehicle position. A method is provided for retaining lubrication in the tappet/roller follower hole by forming a dam defining a reservoir in the head and passively providing lubricant to the tappet/roller follower hole.
