A low cost, energy monitoring system comprises a plurality of remote sensors for monitoring energy consumption in specific circuits, or by specific appliances, a adapter that communicates with the remote sensors over a wireless network, and a host device with a display. The remote sensors monitor energy consumption in specific circuits, or by specific appliances, and report the energy consumption by the monitored circuits or appliances to the remote adapter. The adapter stores the energy consumption data in memory and generates output images for display by the host device. The output images are based on display templates stored in the memory of the adapter and define how the energy consumption data is formatted and displayed for the user.

Wireless home energy monitoring system

A data synchronization method and apparatus are provided for a distributed control system where multiple controllers can control a plurality of actuators or sensors. The actuators or sensors are assigned to logical groups that share a common state. One of the actuators or sensors within a logical group serves as a reference device for a state variable. Before taking a control action, the controllers read the current value of the state variable from the reference device. Data synchronization is maintained by one or more refresh master controllers.

An algorithm for verifying the state of switches (such as in a transfer switch mechanism) and for controlling the switches. The control algorithm controls automatic actuation of the switches. The verification algorithm measures the instantaneous voltage on the source and load sides of one or both switches and calculates the RMS magnitude, period, and relative phase for each voltage measurement. If the voltage characteristics for the load do not match any of those for any source, an error is outputted. If the voltage characteristics of the sources match each other, the algorithm determines that they are synchronized. The algorithm determines which switch is closed by comparing the voltage characteristics of the load and of each source, and if there is a match, then the switch associated with the source that is matched with the load is determined to be closed. Otherwise, the switch is determined to be opened.

A DC motor mechanical shock protection system monitors the motor current to determine the torque the motor is applying to the gearbox, and takes mitigating action if the torque approaches a level that can damage the driven device and/or the drive system. This protects the system from mechanical shock without limiting the available torque during normal operation. The change in motor current is monitored to detect the inertial torque before the elasticity between the motor and the driven device is fully compressed and the motor mounting or gearbox begin to be damaged.

A DC motor phase detection algorithm that monitors the change in motor current to detect pulses in the current caused by the motor's commutator brushes crossing over the gap between rotor commutator segments as the motor shaft rotates. A pulse is generated each time a commutator brush breaks and then reconnects to a commutator segment. The algorithm detects and counts the pulses in order to determine the number of revolutions the shaft has rotated. The motor phase can then be used to determine the distance, rotational or linear, that the moving portion of the load attached to the motor has traveled. If the initial position of the moving portion of the device is known then the absolute position can be calculated.

A sensor system is disclosed. The system comprises a sensor for sensing an input between a first, minimum sensor input value and a second, maximum sensor input value. The sensor generates a sensor output signal relative to the sensor input value. The sensor is subject to offset and gain errors. The system further includes a microprocessor having first and second output signals and a signal conditioner coupled between the sensor and the microprocessor. The signal conditioner generates a first signal conditioner signal when the sensor input value equals the minimum sensor input value and generates a maximum signal conditioner signal when the sensor input value equals the maximum sensor input value. The signal conditioner includes circuitry for minimizing the sensor offset error and circuitry for minimizing the sensor gain error. The offset minimizing circuitry includes circuitry responsive to the first microprocessor signal for generating a signal substantially equal to zero when the sensor input value is at the minimum sensor value. The gain error minimizing circuit includes circuitry responsive to the second microprocessor signal for generating a signal substantially equal to the maximum signal conditioner value when the sensor input is at the maximum sensor value.
