A system and method are disclosed for navigation on the World Wide Web using voice commands. The name of a website may be called out by users several different ways. A user may speak the entire URL, a portion of the URL, or a name of the website which may bear little resemblance to the URL. The present technology uses rules and heuristics embodied in various software engines to determine the best candidate website based on the received voice command, and then navigates to that website.

A combination carrying device includes a rigid basket having a flexible bag nested therein. The flexible bag may be formed from one or more fabrics or like materials and form or define a tapered volume having a pair of handle extensions. The rigid basket may be formed from plastics or like materials and include rotatable handles mounted to sides of the rigid basket. The flexible bag and the rigid basket include magnetically compatible components that cause the flexible bag to remain nested within the rigid basket when such components are within a close proximity of one another. A customer carrying a combination carrying device in a materials handling facility may place one or more items in the flexible bag nested within the rigid basket, and extract the flexible bag from the rigid basket after executing a purchase for the items therein.

Techniques to share media files through messaging are described. An apparatus may comprise a processor and a memory communicatively coupled to the processor. The memory may store a message application that when executed by the processor is operative to communicate a message and a message attachment comprising a media file at different time intervals using different transports. The message may have a link comprising a reference to a discoverable storage location for the media file. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Multi-stage cursor control techniques are described herein in which a control algorithm having multiple stages is applied to facilitate fine grained control over cursor movement and positioning. In one or more implementations, monitoring is performed to detect input provided via a controller for a computing device to manipulate a cursor within a user interface for an application. When input is detected, a multi-stage damping algorithm is applied to the detected input. The multi-stage damping algorithm may include both spatial and temporal dampening factors. Movement of the cursor is rendered in accordance with the damped input determined via application of the algorithm. Then, when input to manipulate the cursor is concluded, an attraction sequence is initiated to move the cursor to a target element contained in the user interface.

Switching between an arm's length user interface and a distance user interface is provided. A first user interface optimized to operate a computer from an arm's-length distance is presented on a display. A command is received. It is determined whether the command is from a wired device or a wirelessly-connected device. When the command is from a wired device, then the first user interface continues to be presented. When the command is from a wirelessly-connected device, then the display is toggled from the first user interface to the distance user interface. The distance user interface is optimized for operating the computer from a television-viewing distance. The television-viewing distance measured in feet is approximately half of a diagonal measure of the image displayed on the display device measured in inches.

Techniques for modes for applications are described. In one or more implementations, multiple operational modes are provided for an application. The operational modes can be associated with different resource access permissions, trust statuses, graphical user interfaces, and so on. An application can be launched in a particular one of the operational modes based on a context in which a request to launch the application is received. In one or more implementations, correlations between launch request contexts for an application and operational modes can be configured to enable different launch requests to cause an application to launch into different operational modes.

Embodiments are disclosed that relate to facilitating navigation through a predefined list of websites, such as a list of favorite websites. One embodiment provides a method of operating a web browser. The method comprises receiving a user input corresponding to a web address list navigation command, and sending to the display device a representation of a navigational overlay that illustrates a change of a current location within a predefined list of web addresses responsive to the user input. The method further comprises, after sending the representation of the navigational overlay, ceasing sending of the representation of the navigational overlay to the display device, and sending to the display device a representation of website content obtained from a web address at the current location within the predefined list of web addresses.

A new user interface, a distance user interface, in a computer system for operating a computer from a television-viewing distance is provided. A centralized display is provided enabling a user to access streaming video and sound as well as music files, video files, and picture files from a single screen. A method, application interface, and medium is provided for presenting a variety of data representations in a screen-area inset. The inset(s) can be one or more bounded portions of a graphical user interface. The inset offers a picture-in-picture type of functionality to present videos, data, pictures, audio, and other data representations in a persistently viewable screen area that does not consume the entirety of a display device. The API includes instructions to allow software components to use the inset. The method includes receiving one or more event requests related to the inset, communicating them to a software application or operating system, receiving one or more data sets to satisfy the event requests, and communicating the data sets to the original software application to present a data representation in the inset.
