Techniques are provided for reducing the likelihood of missed pages during cell reselection. For cell reselection with early camping, a terminal determines that reselection from a first base station to a second base station is required. The terminal then performs cell reselection and receives sufficient system information to process a paging channel for the second base station. The terminal starts monitoring the paging channel upon receiving this information and prior to completing the cell reselection. For cell reselection with reconfirmation, the terminal receives and decodes a control channel for the second base station prior to performing cell reselection. For cell reselection with overlapping page reception, the terminal monitors the paging channel for the first base station until a terminating event occurs and starts monitoring the paging channel for the second base station upon receiving sufficient system information. The monitoring of the two paging channels overlaps in time.

Reducing missed pages during cell reselection in a wireless communication system

Upon power on, a terminal performs cell selection, finds the most suitable cell to receive communication service, and camps on this cell (the serving cell). The terminal thereafter performs 'C2-based' cell reselection if a better cell is found, 'non-C2 based' cell reselection if the current serving cell cannot be camped on, &#x201c;power scan&#x201d; cell reselection if the C2-based or non-C2 based cell reselection fails, and cell selection if the power scan cell reselection fails. For the power scan cell reselection, the terminal initially performs a power scan and obtains received signal strength measurements for a list of RF channels. This list includes fewer than all RF channels evaluated by the cell selection. The terminal then acquires and decodes the N strongest RF channels, preferably in parallel, to find a suitable cell. The terminal selects a suitable cell, if found, with the highest C2 value as the new serving cell from which to receive service.

Cell reselection with power scan and parallel decoding

The mobile telephone system employs a fleet of satellites and a set of gateway ground stations arranged around the globe for handling communications to and from mobile communication units such as mobile telephones. Signals are transmitted between a subscriber unit and the nearest gateway via one or more of the satellites. The gateway system is configured to process telephone call connection requests from a mobile subscriber unit based upon the location of the subscriber unit. The system parses telephone numbers received from the subscriber unit based upon the parsing scheme of the locality in which the subscriber unit is located at the time the telephone call is placed. The system also identifies any emergency services numbers called, such as 911, and directs such calls to the nearest emergency services center to the current location of the subscriber unit. In another implementation, the system is configured to perform lawful intercept of telephone calls to or from a mobile subscriber unit based upon the location of the subscriber unit. The system determines whether law enforcement agencies have requested that telephone communications to or from a particular subscriber unit be intercepted and determines whether, based on the current location of the subscriber unit, the telephone communications can be permissibly intercepted. Thus, if the jurisdiction of a law enforcement agency to intercept a call is restricted to certain geographical areas, such a particular country, state or county, the system determines whether the subscriber unit is within that geographical area before performing the requested intercept.

The mobile telephone system employs a fleet of satellites and a set of gateway ground stations arranged around the globe for handling communications to and from mobile communication subscriber units such as mobile telephones. Signals are transmitted between a subscriber unit and the nearest gateway via one or more of the satellites. The gateway system is configured to process telephone call connection requests from a mobile subscriber unit based upon the location of the subscriber unit. The location of the subscriber unit is employed, for example, to determine how telephone numbers are to be parsed and how to properly route emergency telephone calls to the nearest appropriate emergency service centers. Multiple location mapping schemes are employed to facilitate a determination of the location of a subscriber unit and to assist in routing emergency calls. In one implementation, each location with the service area of the system is mapped into a set of uniformly sized and shaped information cells. Each information cell includes pointers to data structures defining, among other things, the service providers that are permitted to process calls to or from that location and the nearest emergency services center. Each location is also mapped into at least one virtual service provider cell which includes service provider preferences and requirements for handling a call to from that location and including a unique location identifier. A specific implementation for use with the Global System for Mobile Communication is described.
