A barrier coating comprising a polyurethane dispersion and an elastomeric material is disclosed. The polyurethane comprises at least 30 weight percent of meta-substituted aromatic material. Methods for improving barrier using the coatings are also disclosed.

The present invention provides methods for forming composite coatings on substrates including the steps of: (A) applying an aqueous primary coating composition to at least a portion of a surface of a substrate, the primary coating composition including: (1) at least one thermosettable dispersion including polymeric microparticles having functionality adapted to react with a crosslinking material, the microparticles including: (a) at least one acid functional reaction product of ethylenically unsaturated monomers; and (b) at least one hydrophobic polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 500; and (2) at least one crosslinking material, to form a substantially uncured primary coating thereon; (B) applying a secondary coating composition to at least a portion of the primary coating formed in step (A) without substantially curing the primary coating to form a substantially uncured secondary coating thereon; and (C) applying a clear coating composition to at least a portion of the secondary coating formed in step (B) without substantially curing the secondary coating to form a substantially uncured composite coating thereon.

Methods for forming composite coatings on substrates

An adherent coating composition and method has a resin composition that is the polymerization reaction product of one or more polyhydric alcohols and two polybasic carboxylic acids and salt forming compounds of phosphorus. The carboxylic acid is comprised of at least adipic acid and phthalic anhydride in a mole ratio in the range of about 0.6:1 to about 3:1, and the phosphorus compound is present in the range of about 1 to about 5 weight percent of the resin composition. The resin composition can have a weight average molecular weight in the range of about 1100 to about 4000 and an acid value in the range of about 5 to about 40. Optionally, the resin can have up to about 35 weight percent of tetrahydrophthlic anhydride. The resin composition is ungelled and curable with crosslinking agents in an amount of about 30 to about 90 weight percent of resin to about 10 to about 45 weight percent of the crosslinking agent. These weight percents are based on the resin solids of the coating composition which is useful as a primer coating for substrates such as metal.

A composition is disclosed which includes a urethane resin containing reactive ethylenically unsaturated groups and hydroxyl groups, which is preferably derived by reacting a polyisocyanate and an isocyanate reactive group-containing unsaturated monomer selected from the group consisting of hydroxyalkyl acrylates, hydroxyalkyl methacrylates, hydroxyalkyl acrylamides, hydroxy functional allylic compounds, and mixtures thereof to form an isocyanate group-containing reaction product which is then reacted with an organic polyol wherein the equivalent number of hydroxyl groups is in excess compared with the equivalent number of isocyanate groups. The composition also includes an aminoplast resin for reaction with hydroxyl groups on the urethane resin in an amount of less than about 10% by weight based on solids of the composition which is effective in thin film curing of the composition. The composition can also optionally include a thermally activated free radical initiator and a cure-promoting catalyst different from the free radical initiator; such as a metal soap. A method is also disclosed of applying a layer of the composition in which a portion of the layer is a thin film. The method is particularly useful in applying the composition to a substrate which is coated with a cationically electrodeposited primer. The composition and method of the invention are particularly useful for making a chip resistant coating and obtaining good cure at thin film layers of the composition.

This invention relates to coating compositions which are 'solid' prior to application, yet, which when applied to a substrate, flow and level in a manner similar to conventional coating compositions. The coating compositions of the invention comprise a gelled coating composition, capable of application and flow on a solid substrate comprising: (a) a water reducible polymer, (b) water, (c) an electrolyte, (d) a colloidal gelling agent, gelable by interaction with the electrolyte, in an amount sufficient, when interacted with said electrolyte, to gel the composition to form a stable semisolid and to provide a composition reducible to a coating application viscosity upon the application of a relatively small shearing force at a relatively small shearing rate; which gelled coating composition, after being sheared to a coating application viscosity, does not recover substantial colloidal gelling agent contributed gel structure and (e) an amount of a gel structure formation rate increasing compound which corresponds, or is hydrolyzable in situ to effectively provide a compound which corresponds to the formula:

A pad applicator suitable for applying paint comprises a handle, an exterior applying layer and a resilient cushion interposed between the handle and the exterior applying layer. The exterior applying layer comprises two working zones, the first having a pile of generally erect bristle-like fibers and the second having a pile of soft, fleecy fibers.

Semi-solid water-based coating compositions

Void-containing microcapsules are prepared by a method featuring gellation of an organic polymer with the simultaneous precipitation of an organic liquid non-solvent. The method involves the preparation of a solution containing an organic polymer, a good solvent for the polymer and an organic liquid non-solvent which is miscible with the polymer solvent. The solution is then atomized into a bath containing a liquid which is miscible with the good polymer solvent but which is immiscible with the organic liquid non-solvent. The bath liquid extracts out the good polymer solvent, causing gellation of polymer around discrete droplets of the organic liquid non-solvent, which simultaneously precipitates out of the solution as the good polymer solvent is extracted, thereby producing microcapsules having encapsulated therein the non-solvent. The organic liquid non-solvent can then be removed as by evaporation to provide void-containing microcapsules. These void-containing microcapsules may be employed as opacifying agents. In addition to producing void-containing microcapsules, this method can be utilized to produce microcapsules in which pigments are entrapped in the voids or the polymeric walls of the microcapsules or in which certain non-solvents which serve a secondary function remain entrapped in the microcapsules. Such non-solvents include, for instance, vitamins, minerals, biocides, perfumes, chemical reactants, fertilizers, and the like.

Method of preparing microcapsules

Microcapsules are produced in-situ in a film or during the manufacturing process of a water-based coating composition from which the film is formed. A principal process involves the in-situ production of void-containing microcapsules in a film formed from a water-based coating. This principal process involves as a first step the preparation of a polymer composition which may be a homogeneous solution containing a water-immiscible organic polymer, a water-immiscible solvent for the polymer, and a water-immiscible lower volatility non-solvent which is miscible with the solvent; or an emulsion containing as the continuous phase a water-immiscible organic polymer dissolved in a water-immiscible solvent for the polymer and, as the discontinuous phase, droplets of a lower volatility non-solvent dispersed in the continuous phase. This polymer composition is then emulsified under agitation and in the presence of a surfactant into a water-based coating composition. The water-based coating composition containing this emulsified polymer composition is then applied to a substrate and the solvent is evaporated from the polymer composition to produce microcapsules containing discrete droplets of the non-solvent. Subsequent drying of the water-based coating and evaporation of the non-solvent from the microcapsules produces a film having incorporated therein structured, closed-cell, void-containing microcapsules with the voids serving to provide opacity and gloss control to the film. In an alternative to the principal process, microcapsules containing the non-solvent are produced in-situ in the water-based coating composition prior to forming a film therefrom.

Solid organic inert flatting agents are prepared by reacting urea or phenol and formaldehyde in a basic aqueous medium to provide a prepolymer solution, then blending the prepolymer in the presence of a protective colloid-forming material, subsequently acidifying the basic prepolymer solution so that particles are formed and precipitated in the presence of a colloid-forming material, as spheroidal beads, and finally collecting and, if desired, drying the urea or phenol formaldehyde particulate beads. These beads have a high flatting efficiency and may be incorporated in resinous vehicles to provide compositions that produce low glass coatings of desirable properties.
