A system and method for managing network communication in an asymmetric network environment. The system includes a gateway. The gateway receives a plurality of packets for transmission over first communication network. The plurality of packets are received via primary network path. The gateway dynamically evaluates the plurality of packets. The gateway classifies the plurality of packets into a latency sensitive packet and a latency agnostic packet. The gateway determines network capacity of the primary network path and a secondary network path. The gateway splits the latency sensitive packet and the latency agnostic packet between the primary network path and the secondary network path. The gateway selects the primary network path for transmitting the latency sensitive packet. The gateway selects the secondary network path for transmitting the latency agnostic packet over downstream transmission. Furthermore, the gateway transmits the latency sensitive packet and the latency agnostic packet to a client device.

Network system for enhanced communication using multiple paths

A network communication system which provides cost effective support for two or more WAN transports from a single SD-WAN site. The network communication system, may at times by default, monitor a higher-cost WAN for only basic connectivity to reduce monitoring costs of the transport. Where an application is properly configured, the system may override the default to monitor a higher-cost WAN for acceptable performance (i.e., monitored for connectivity, packet loss, latency, jitter & capacity) even when that WAN is not selected as active transport.

Cost-effective control of multiple transports of an SD-WAN gateway

An approach for allocating bandwidth is disclosed. A request is detected from a terminal for capacity on a communication channel based on type of traffic transmitted from the terminal. A bandwidth allocation pattern designated for the terminal is retrieved, wherein the bandwidth allocation pattern is set based on a predetermined service plan associated with the terminal. Bandwidth over the communication channel is reserved for the terminal according to the bandwidth allocation pattern without feedback to the terminal. This arrangement has particular applicability to a satellite network that provides data communication services.

Method and apparatus for providing open loop bandwidth allocation

An approach for transmission of data packets, based on virtual frame timing, over a communications channel is provided. A remote terminal receives a first stream of data packets at periodic time intervals. The terminal receives an allocation of time slots within a sequence of TDMA transmission frames, for transmission of the data packets over the channel. The timing structure of the allocated time slots is based on a virtual frame size relative to the interval timing of the first data packet stream, and independent of the frame size/timing of the TDMA transmission frames. The remote terminal may receive a second stream of data packets at periodic time intervals that differ from the time intervals of the first stream. In a multi-stream scenario, the virtual frame size for the time slot allocation is based on the greatest common denominator of the interval timings of the first and second data streams.

Virtual data framing for data packet transmission over channels of a communications network

A method of providing a high symbol rate communication system with reduced overhead bandwidth includes calculating a minimum feasible aperture length at a network operations center, setting a hub demodulator subsystem to use an aperture length calculated from the minimum feasible aperture length, broadcasting the aperture length to a VSAT, and receiving an inroute data stream from the VSAT utilizing the aperture length.

Method and apparatus for high symbol rate communication system with reduced overhead bandwidth

A device is provided for use with an input signal including a first packet of a first modulation type in series with a second packet of a second modulation type. The device includes a gain adjustment portion and a gain portion. The gain adjustment portion can output a first gain adjustment signal based on the first packet or can output a second gain adjustment signal based on the second packet. The gain portion can output a first signal corresponding to the first packet and can output a second signal corresponding to the second packet. The first signal is based on the input signal and a first gain factor. The second signal is based on the input signal and a second gain factor. The first gain factor is based on the first gain adjustment signal. The second gain factor is based on the second gain adjustment signal.

System and method for dynamic output back-off

An approach for load balancing is disclosed. A user load is determined based upon data queued for transmission at each of the terminals. In addition, an inroute load corresponding to loading of inroutes serving the terminals is determined. A user-to-inroute distribution that minimizes variation of the inroute load is generated. The user-to-inroute distribution maps the user load to the inroutes. The user load is reassigned to the inroutes based on the determined user-to-inroute distribution. This arrangement has particular applicability to a satellite network that provides data communication services.

Method and system for load balancing over a set of communication channels

An approach is provided for shaping traffic of a communication system. Resource usage of a network element of the communication system is determined. The usage is compared with thresholds that are established according to loading of the communication system; these thresholds correspond to various transmission states that limit usage of the resources of the communication system (e.g., bandwidth). Further, based on the comparison, the resource usage of the network element is controlled according to a particular transmission state, thereby ensuring fair access. This approach as particular applicability to shared capacity systems, such as a satellite communication system.

Method and system for providing load sensitive throttling

An approach is provided for obtaining load of a terminal operating in a communication system. A query is transmitted for a cumulative load of the terminal, wherein the terminal belongs to a group of terminals having a common service level. The cumulative load for the terminal is determined based on load information supplied by the terminal and bandwidth allocation information, wherein the cumulative load represents a total amount of data sent over a communication channel of the communication system. The determined cumulative load is provided in response to the query. This arrangement has particular applicability to a satellite network that provides data communication services.

Method and apparatus for assessing traffic load of a communication network

This disclosure relates to the transmission of binary data over a network between a transmission host and a receiving host. The transmission host receives packets of data including data in a first format which may be ASCII formatted and contain 6 bits-per-byte words, and including data which had an original binary format containing greater than 6 bits-per-byte words (such as 8 bits-per-byte) and which has been encoded (such as Uuencoded) to 6 bits-per-byte words. The transmission host searches the packets and identifies the encoded data and reverse codes the encoded data to its original binary format, before transmitting the data on a suitable network transmission media that can transmit both ASCII formatted data and data having greater than 6 bit-per-byte formats. The transmission host also includes an application packet demultiplexer for separating the incoming data according its application such as HTTP, NNTP, FTP, etc. The transmitting host includes an identifier in the packets for identifying the reverse coded data. The receiving host responds to the identifier and may encode the previously reverse coded data.

Technique for data compression by decoding binary encoded data

An approach is provided for supporting monitoring of network load. An allocation state is determined based on a bandwidth allocation value, a group load, and a guaranteed portion of capacity of a communication channel. The bandwidth allocation value specifies an actual amount of capacity of the communication channel allocated to one of a plurality of groups of terminals. The group load indicates loads of the terminals belonging to the one group. Capacity of the communication channel is assigned according to the determined allocation state. This arrangement has particular applicability to a satellite network that provides data communication services.

Method and apparatus for providing quality of service guarantees using stateful monitoring of network load

An approach for providing secure access to inroutes or return channels in a radio communication system including a hub communicating with terminals is disclosed. A quality of service level (QoS) corresponding to one of the terminals is determined. An identifier is assigned to the one terminal for communicating over a set of return channels that are in the direction of the one terminal to the hub. The identifier associates a subset of the terminals with the QoS level; the subset includes the one terminal. This arrangement has particular applicability to a satellite network that provides data communication services.
