Compositions and articles comprising a stress and crack resistant component comprising a thermoplastic component and an elongation component. In some examples, the invention is directed to a stress and crack resistant component comprising a thermoplastic component, an elongation modifier component and an elongation temperer; in preferred examples the thermoplastic component comprises a polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified (PETG) copolyester, the elongation modifier component comprises a halogenated polyolefin having a heat of fusion of 1 J/g or less, and the elongation temperer comprises a polystyrene acrylonitrile) (SAN). In preferred examples the stress-resistant component is comprised as a coating component covering at least one surface of a substrate, such as one comprising a medium density fiberboard (MDF), a particle board, an oriented strand board, fiberglass, a natural wood, a composite wood product, and a synthetic substrate. The stress-resistant component is preferably, though not invariably, produced by extrusion. The invention is also directed to articles, such as extrusion profiles, comprising the stress-resistant component, and methods of making such articles.

Stress-resistant extrudates

New composite members, for example, useful in decks or decking systems, rail or railing systems and window-coverings or blinds and the like, as well as methods for producing the same or like items have been discovered. The composites or composite members are easy to manufacture in a variety of configurations using relatively inexpensive materials. In addition, the composites are sturdy, lightweight and have excellent weatherability properties. In addition, the composites or composite members have many of the desirable properties of natural wood products such as fences and decks and railings. For example, the composites of the invention can be made to have a wood-like look and texture, for example, without having any wood content. Moreover, unlike solid wood fences and decks, the composites of the present invention preferably are highly resistant to effects of weathering.

Composite members and methods for producing same

A coating apparatus and method are disclosed that applies a coating to a product in a uniform and controlled manner. The coating apparatus comprises a feeding stage, an optional pre-treatment stage, at least one coating stage and a finishing stage. The coating stage(s) comprise a coating material feeder and a coating device. The coating device includes an aperture conforming to the perimeter of a substrate to be coated in a first and second dimension. As the substrate passes through the aperture, coating material is applied in a uniform and consistent layer ranging from 0.001 inches to 0.250 inches. The coating material also back fills minor surface imperfections and blemishes on the substrate to achieve a consistent finish across the whole area where coating material is applied. The coating device includes first and second shell portions. The first shell portion has a concave surface surrounding the aperture portion. The concave surface allows for coating material to collect prior to deposition upon the surface of the substrate. The second shell has a substantially flat face and a mirror aperture that aligns with the aperture of the first shell. A groove is formed along the perimeter of the aperture to collect coating material for coating the object as it passes through the apertures of both shells.

Method and apparatus for extruding a coating upon a substrate surface

Useful composites and methods of using such composites are provided. The composites include an outer layer containing a first polymeric material, an intermediate layer circumscribed by the outer layer and containing a second polymeric material, and an inner layer circumscribed by the intermediate layer and containing a third polymeric material. The inner layer, in combination with the intermediate layer, is structured and effective to reinforce the composite relative to a substantially identical composite without the inner layer. The present composites can be produced using co-extrusion processing.

Layered composites

Materials which have substantial weatherability and impact resistance include a substantially uniform blend of an acrylonitrile/styrene/acrylic (ASA) polymeric material, a wood component in an amount effective as a filler, and a vinyl chloride polymeric material. Methods for making such compositions include combining a first population of pellets comprising an ASA polymeric material and a wood component, and a second population of different pellets comprising a vinyl chloride polymeric material.

Extrudable compositions and processes for producing same

A coating method is disclosed that applies a coating to a product in a uniform and controlled manner. The coating method comprises a feeding step, an optional pre-treatment step, at least one coating step, and a finishing step. The coating step(s) comprise the use of a coating material feeder and a coating device. During the coating step(s), a substrate passes through an aperture in the coating device which, includes first and second shell portions, where the first shell portion has a concave surface surrounding the aperture portion. The second shell has a substantially flat face and a mirror aperture that aligns with the aperture of the first shell. The concave surface of the first shell and a groove formed along the perimeter of the aperture collect coating material for coating the object as it passes through the apertures of both shells.

Polymer processing systems are provided including an extrusion assembly, a specially configured decompression chamber assembly, and a die assembly. Such systems are effective to provide shaped polymer products having reduced extrusion markings.

Foamed composites and methods for making same

Composite fence and decking components, for example, rails, posts and planks, are provided which generally include a weatherable outer layer, a core layer made of a thermoplastic polymeric composition and a wood component in an amount effective as a filler, and an inner layer made of a thermoplastic material. The layers are configured so as to form a generally central hollow space. The components are light weight and inexpensive to manufacture. The components can be manufactured by using a single coextrusion process to produce a cylindrical form. The cylindrical form is passed through a reshaping die to form a composite having a desired cross sectional form, for example, a composite with a substantially square or rectangular cross section.
