A surgical instrument includes a selectively rotatable housing, an adaptor, and a shaft including an end effector. The adaptor is coupled to the housing and is selectively movable between a first position and a second position. The shaft is coupled to one or both of the housing and the adaptor. The end effector is articulable in response to the selective rotation of the housing. The end effector is articulable toward a first direction when the adaptor is positioned in the first position and articulable toward a second direction when the adaptor is positioned in the second position. The first and second directions are different.

Surgical instrument with adapter for facilitating multi-direction end effector articulation

A surgical device for performing surgery includes a handle assembly, an elongate member extending from the handle assembly, an articulation mechanism, and an adapter. The elongate member has articulating and straight sections. The articulating section is configured to articulate with respect to the straight section. The adapter rotatably couples the elongate member with the articulation mechanism such that when the elongate member is in a first rotational orientation with respect to the articulation mechanism, the articulating section articulates toward a first direction relative to the straight section upon movement of the handle assembly towards the first direction with respect to the straight section and when the elongate member is in a second rotational orientation with respect to the articulation mechanism, the articulating section articulates toward a second direction relative to the straight section upon movement of the handle assembly towards the first direction with respect to the straight section.

Dual directional articulation hand instrument

To enable a user to readily determine the gauge of the needle of a needle assembly that has a base and a needle protective housing pivotably attached thereto, the needle assembly is injection molded from a color coded molding material which color was preassigned to correspond to the gauge of the needle. As a result, both the base and the protective housing of the needle assembly have the same specific color, and reflect or provide an indication of the given gauge of the needle. The needle sheath that covers the needle prior to use may be made of a plastics material that may be clear, or have the same or a different color than that of the needle assembly. The gauge of the needle of a fixed needle syringe could also be ascertained by its color coded needle protective housing. Color coded markings that correspond to the gauge of the needle may also be printed onto the syringe barrel of the fixed needle syringe.

Vessel wound closure systems and method for sealing a puncture wound in a target vessel, such as those puncture wounds that occur from interventional procedures. The vessel wound closure system comprises at least a biocompatible, viscoelastic, self-sealing septum material injected onto the adventitia of the target vessel prior to performance of an interventional procedure. The prior injected septum material remains and seals the puncture wound of the target vessel even after various components associated with accessing the target vessel and the performance of the interventional procedure are removed from the target vessel and the puncture wound.

Systems and methods for closing a vessel wound

A fixed needle syringe has a syringe barrel with its distal portion modified to accept a needle protective housing. In particular, the distal portion is formed with the a groove dimensioned to accept a collar that is attached to the housing. The inside surface of the collar is provided with a number of flanges that fit within the groove formed at the distal portion of the syringe barrel of the fixed needle syringe. Protrusions are provided at the inside surface of the collar to frictionally act against the syringe barrel, so that the needle protective housing does not freely rotate, but is rotatable relative to the syringe barrel by the application of a predetermined torque to either the collar or the housing attached thereto. An internal hook is provided in the housing to grasp the needle of the syringe, when the housing is pivoted to cover the needle extending from the needle hub of the syringe. Coacting locking members are provided at the base of the housing and the outside of the collar for fixedly retaining the housing relative to the collar, once the housing has been pivoted along the alignment position of the syringe. The collar reception portion of the syringe barrel may also be modified with a circumferential boss, with the inside surface of the collar correspondingly grooved so that the collar is matable with the syringe body in an alternative embodiment.

By interposing an adapter between the endotracheal or tracheal tube inserted to a patient and the ventilation and suction systems that are connected to the endotracheal tube, a catheter could be inserted via an input port built into the adapter so as to enable a medical personnel to provide localized treatments in the lungs of a patient without having to disconnect either one of the systems connected to the endotracheal tube. The adapter is configured to have a securing mechanism that allows the medical personnel to secure the medication catheter in place. A one way valve fitted to the apertured arm that forms the input port of the adapter prevents any back flow of fluid from the input port. The catheter is manufactured with calibration markings, most likely equally spaced, and a radiopaque line along its length to enhance the maneuvering and the positioning thereof in the patient so that the distal tip of the catheter could be accurately positioned to the desired location of the patient's tracheal/bronchial tree. As a result, the localized treatment such as the injection of a medicament is accurately provided to the appropriate location where the need is the greatest.

Adapter for localized treatment through a tracheal tube and method for use thereof

An electrosurgical instrument and method is provided for transecting an organ. The electrosurgical instrument includes an introducer having a channel therein, and a conductive wire positioned in and deployable from the channel. A deployment device on the introducer is capable of moving the conductive wire between an undeployed position wherein it is substantially positioned within the channel, and a deployed position wherein a portion is deployed from and positioned outside of the channel and has a substantially looped configuration. A capture element at the distal end of the introducer can secure the distal end of the wire to the introducer, and the deployment device can subsequently move the wire toward the undeployed position to thereby cinch the conductive wire.

Electrosurgical instrument and method for transecting an organ

A sterilization device which causes occlusion to the fallopian tubes of a patient is designed to be trancervically positioned in the intramural portion of the tube without perforating the tube. The device includes a flexible hollow catheter having an interior passageway, a distal end for insertion trancervically into a patient, and a proximal end opposite the distal end for grasping and manipulation by a physician. The device further includes a pair of diametrically opposed electrodes, each being movably mounted on the distal end of the catheter and radially movable with respect to the distal end. The electrodes are elongated axially and arcuate transversely and are expandable from a closed state, which defines the distal end of the catheter with a reduced diameter for proper transcervical delivery and placement in the fallopian tube of a patient, and an open state, where the electrodes are separated from one another a greater distance than when they are in the closed state, to define the distal end of the catheter with an enlarged diameter. In the expanded state, the diametrically opposed electrodes stretch the tissue of the fallopian tube to reduce blood flow and to help localize heating of the surrounding tissue. The electrodes are provided with RF (radio frequency) energy in their expanded state to heat the tissue of the fallopian tube which they contact. A temperature sensor situated at the distal end of the catheter measures the temperature of the heated tissue. The RF energy provided to the electrodes is controlled to ensure that the tissue is not overheated.

An electrode instrument is provided and includes an electrode head and a pair of electrodes for emitting RF energy for use in thermal ablation therapy. The electrodes are movable between a collapsed configuration and deployed configuration. When collapsed, the electrodes are proximate to each other, and when deployed, the electrodes are spaced apart from each other. The electrode instrument includes linkage mechanisms that are used to maintain the electrodes in their deployed configuration.

A medical device is provided and includes an elongated tube that has a longitudinal axis and an expandable member attached to the tube. The expandable member is expandable from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration. A plurality of electrodes is attached to the expandable member. The electrodes are used to emit energy. Each of the electrodes is arranged generally coaxially relative to the tube when the expandable member is in its collapsed and expanded configurations.

Device and method to expand treatment array

A needle safety device has a collar and a housing pivotally connected thereto. Cooperating locking members are provided at the collar and the respective lower sections of the housing so that, once the housing is pivoted to be in alignment with the collar, the locking members would coactingly mate with each other to thereby retain the housing to the collar. To ensure that the coacting locking members could not be sabotaged by the sidewalls of the housing being deliberately forced away from the collar, barriers in the form of guard flaps or arms are provided at the collar so as to prevent those sections of the sidewall that are susceptible to being forced away from the collar from being exposed. As an added benefit, the guard flaps could be used as an anchor to provide stabilization for the use of a hypodermic needle fitted with the safety needle device of the instant invention during a subcutaneous procedure to a patient.
