Generally speaking, pursuant to the various embodiments, pre-allocation of resources in a RAN of a communication system is performed. A system element having an application function determines, for a set of user equipment (UE), pre-allocation information used to select a set of cells in the RAN to which the set of UE will connect for exchanging data. The element sends a request to establish a bearer to an evolved packet core (EPC), wherein the request includes the pre-allocation information. The determining and sending actions are performed prior to one or more of the UE in the set of UE connecting to the set of cells. The EPC processes the request and returns a response to the system element, which identifies that a bearer for unicast and/or group communications has been established.

Method for bearer establishment in a radio access network

A hosted inter-radio frequency subsystem interface (HIF) maintains a list of affiliated radio frequency subsystems (RFSSs), the list identifies at least one serving RFSS. An affiliation request is transmitted from the HIF to the home RFSS, which is a home RFSS of the group. The HIF receives from the serving RFSS a request to initiate an inter-RFSS group call to the group using HIF addressing. The HIF transmits a request to the home RFSS to initiate the inter-RFSS group call using serving RFSS addressing. A data packet from the home RFSS or the serving RFSS is received at the HIF. Upon receipt, the HIF transmits a copy of the data packet to the serving RFSS if the data packet was received from the home RFSS; otherwise, the HIF transmits a copy of the data packet to the home RFSS if the data packet was received from the serving RFSS.

Method and device for establishing an inter-radio frequency subsystem interface (ISSI) group call

A method and device enable establishing an inter-radio frequency subsystem interface (ISSI) unit-to-unit call between a calling unit of a calling home radio frequency subsystem (RFSS), and a called unit of a called home RFSS, through a hosted ISSI function (HIF). The method includes processing, at the HIF, a first invite message received from the calling home RFSS, wherein the first invite message includes a first request uniform resource identifier (URI) that designates an alias system unit identification (SU-ID). In response to the first invite message, transmitting, from the HIF to the called home RFSS, a second invite message, including a second request URI that designates a real SU-ID, wherein the HIF acts as the calling home RFSS. The unit-to-unit call is thus established between the calling unit and the called unit through the calling home RFSS, the HIF, and the called home RFSS.

Method and device for establishing an inter-radio frequency subsystem interface (ISSI) unit-to-unit call

Resource allocation is performed in a shared wireless network that includes multiple cells, a shared wireless network QoS manager, and multiple local QoS managers. The shared wireless QoS manager receives from multiple ones of the local QoS managers on a per cell and per QoS service class basis (for a plurality of QoS service classes): an aggregation of current cell usage estimations; an aggregation of cell load level indicators, and an aggregation of additional resources needed. Using this received information, the shared wireless network QoS manager: determines a total capacity of each cell that is needed to satisfy a total resource need on a cell by cell basis for the local QoS managers; and based on a maximum capacity for each cell, allocates to each local QoS manager a percentage of their total resource need.

A method and system is implemented to form a communication group comprising a plurality of entities. The method includes receiving a resource manager state generated for an event and extracting a plurality of parameters that indicate resource availability based on the resource manager state. The method further includes applying a set of rules to the resource state and to the plurality of parameters to select resources to form a communication group comprising a plurality of entities to distribute content related to the event.

Method and system for forming a communication group for content distribution related to an event

An apparatus and method for establishing a session in a communication network supporting multimedia group calls. A first step () includes determining streams for a multimedia group call by the service entity. A next step () includes providing an indicator of the resources required for at least one stream of the group call by the service entity. A next step () includes paging the subscriber unit with the indicator for the at least one stream of the group call by the service entity. A next step () includes ascertaining the capabilities and resources of the subscriber unit. A next step () includes establishing a channel for only those streams of the group call for which the capabilities and resources of the subscriber unit are sufficient with respect to the indicator for those streams.

Joining a session in a communication network supporting multimedia group calls

A method, device, and computer-readable storage element enables a multi-mode device to establish a session through multiple networks in a communication system. The method includes registering, at the same time, each of a plurality of sub-clients of a single multi-mode device with a single application server, wherein each sub-client is separately registered through a different network, using an individual logical identity. The method further includes detecting an invitation including session parameters to establish a session using the single application server, and selecting at least one of the sub-clients to process the invitation based on the session parameters to establish the session through the networks corresponding to the selected sub-client.

Method and devices for enabling a multi-mode device to establish a session through multiple networks

A subscriber unit: sends a media flow to a correspondent host; receives, from the correspondent host, an indication of a level of congestion in the communication network; compares the level of congestion to a congestion threshold (TH) during a first time interval, wherein THis determined based on an assigned priority level for the media flow, and terminates the media flow and enters a sleep mode state when, after expiration of the first time interval, the level of congestion exceeds TH; while in the sleep mode state, the subscriber unit compares a level of congestion in the communication network to a congestion threshold (TH), and exits the sleep mode state and resumes the media flow when the level of congestion remains below THfor the duration of a second time interval.

Methods and apparatus for controlling congestion in a communication network

A method and apparatus resolves message collisions in wireless TDMA packet systems for subscribers that communicate in half duplex modes. In one embodiment, a wireless TDMA network element () includes at least one processing device () and memory (), operatively coupled to the processing device (). The processing device () divides an outbound message () designated for a first subscriber and produces therefrom an independent first message portion (such as an independent short message) () and an independent second message portion (such as an independent longer remaining message) (). Each of the independent first and second message portions () are allocated to two different wireless outbound reservations for a common subscriber. The independent first message () is transmitted first. If a collision is detected, the wireless network element () avoids sending the independent second portion () to the first subscriber, otherwise the independent second message portion () is subsequently sent.

Method and apparatus for resolving half duplex message collisions

A wireless communication system ( ) employs a method and apparatus for providing information to multiple communication units ( ). The communication system includes a communication infrastructure ( ), a data network ( ) and an information source ( ). The multiple communication units each subscribe to an information service provided by the information source. The communication infrastructure creates a subscription group that includes the multiple communication units. The infrastructure receives subscriber information including at least one information unit from the information source and sets up a point-to-multipoint group call with the subscription group. The infrastructure then transmits the subscriber information to the multiple communication units. Any information unit not confirmed by the multiple communication units is re-transmit by the infrastructure. If any information unit remains unconfirmed after the re-transmission, the infrastructure sets up a point-to-point communication session with individual communication units and re-transmits the remaining unconfirmed information unit.

Method and apparatus for providing information to a plurality of communication units in a wireless communication system

A cellular radio communications system comprises: at least one base station for broadcasting radio signals to mobile stations within a cell; a mobile station addressable using IP addresses; and a first controller in the cell of the cellular radio communications system, the first controller being adapted: (i) to receive a request from the mobile station that the cellular radio communication system assign to the mobile station the static IP address previously assigned to the mobile station outside of the cell; (ii) in response to the request from the mobile station, to check with a second controller associated with the location where the mobile station was previously registered that the static IP address has not been assigned to another mobile station; and (iii) to assign the static IP address previously assigned to the mobile station, outside of the cell, to the mobile station for use in the cell, if the static IP address has not been assigned to another mobile station. Alternatively, the first controller may perform the check for availability of the static IP address with a controller associated with the location where the static IP address is registered. The invention also comprises methods of mobile station registration in cellular radio communication systems. The invention enables roaming by a mobile station between cellular systems which are under the control of different Software and Measurement Infrastructures. Mobile stations may be adapted to check one or more timers prior to making the static IP address request.

Assigning an IP address to a mobile station while roaming

A data communications system includes a server router (,), such as an access controller gateway, operably coupled to at least one client router (,), such as a base radio controller, by an asynchronous link, such as a LAN (,). The client router forwards data received from the server router and stored in the client router's outbound queue (,) synchronously to a device, such as a mobile station (,). The client router's outbound queue is maintained between a lower queue limit and an upper queue limit so as to both reduce the occurrence of data starvation and reduce the amount of data lost should the mobile station hand off to a new serving site. The server router calculates an optimum average send rate and transmits data in bursts at regular intervals, and adjusts the average send rate in response to changes in the outbound rate of the client router. The client router is state machine driven, and sends flow control messages only when entering a new state so as to reduce the amount of flow control messaging.

Method and apparatus for performing flow control in a wireless communications system

In a wireless communication system, session timers are separately maintained by a communication device (101) and a system controller (104). When a portion of outbound data is sent to a base station (102) for transmission to the communication device, the base station creates at least one transmission time stamp which is then sent to the system controller (203). If a session has not been previously established, the system controller uses the at least one transmission time stamp to establish a session and initiate a session timer (204). If a session has been previously established, the system controller uses the at least one transmission time stamp to determine whether to continue the current session timer (709). This applies to inbound data as well. Furthermore, session timers can also be synchronized to paging acknowledgments (305), channel information messages (503) or channel access messages (602). In this manner, session timers are more accurately synchronized.

Method for synchronizing a session timer

A radio communication system (100) employs a method and apparatus for providing packet data communications to a communication unit (e.g., 120). The communication system includes a system controller (102), a packet data router (101), and multiple base sites (103-109). Each base site serves a respective service coverage area (133-139) and the service coverage areas a grouped into multiple location areas (150-151). The packet data router receives a data packet intended for the communication unit and processes a transport protocol layer of the packet. The packet data router then determines whether the communication unit is presently involved in a packet data communication session based at least on information contained in the transport protocol layer of the packet. When the communication unit is presently involved in such a communication session, the packet data router provides the first data packet directly to the communication unit via a base site (104) serving a service coverage area (134) containing the communication unit. However, when the communication unit is not presently involved in such a communication session, the packet data router instructs the system controller to page the communication unit from the base sites (103-106) serving a location area (150) containing the communication unit.
