A device is provided for detection and analysis of a component of interest in a sample comprising a small sample cell used with an ultra violet laser. The energy of the laser is spread over an area such that energy density is above desorption threshold, but the sample not ablated. The device provides for rapid and reliable detection of a component of interest, and a method of using the same. The sample cell provides decreased dispersion of the sample.

Methods for measuring the concentration of heavy metals such as lead in oral fluid are provided. The concentration of lead in oral fluid can be accurately correlated with the concentration of lead in the blood serum. The methods are useful for, among other things, diagnosis and monitoring of heavy metal exposure.

Oral fluid assays for the detection of heavy metal exposure

The present invention provides universal transfer apparatus and method to use this universal transfer apparatus. This invention further provides a method to obtain speciation data for organometals in a complex matrix, such as cigarette smoke. Our data demonstrate that gas chromatography linked to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrophotometer with the universal transfer apparatus provides metal speciation information for samples of tobacco smoke. The organometals include lead, tin, arsenic and cadmium.
