An apparatus, system, and method for an eye tracking system for a head-mounted device include a light source, an image sensor, and a frame tracking system. The light source and image sensor may be configured to determine absolute and relative eye orientations. The frame tracking system may be configured to determine the displacement of a head-mounted device frame relative to the face of the user. The frame tracking system may provide displacement data for the displacement of the head-mounted device frame to the eye tracking system to enable the eye tracking system to compensate for frame slippage, frame jostling, or other frame displacement (relative to the face of the user). The frame tracking system may include one or more position sensors disposed on the head-mounted device frame and logic configured to determine displacement data using information from the one or more position sensors.

Eyeglass devices may include a frame shaped and sized to be worn by a user at least partially in front of the user's eyes, a varifocal optical element mounted to the frame, and an eye-tracking element mounted to the frame. The varifocal optical element may include a substantially transparent actuator positioned at least partially within an optical aperture of the varifocal optical element and configured to alter a shape of the varifocal optical element upon actuation. The eye-tracking element may be configured to track at least a gaze direction of the user's eyes, and the varifocal optical element may be configured to change, based on information from the eye-tracking element, in at least one optical property including a focal distance. Various other devices, systems, and methods are also disclosed.

Eyeglass devices and related methods

An actuator includes a primary electrode, a secondary electrode overlapping at least a portion of the primary electrode, and an electroactive layer disposed between and abutting the primary electrode and the secondary electrode, where a mechanical deformation of the electroactive layer is locally controllable over an area of the actuator. The mechanical deformation of the electroactive layer may be configured to generate compound curvature, e.g., in an optical element co-integrated with the actuator, without buckling the optical element.

An optical assembly is configured to receive visible scene light at the backside of the optical assembly and to direct the visible scene light on an optical path toward the eyeward side. The optical assembly includes a dimming element disposed on the optical path, where the dimming element includes a photochromic material that is configured to darken in response to exposure to a range of light wavelengths. A display layer is disposed on the optical path between the eyeward side of the optical assembly and the dimming element. The display layer is configured to direct visible display light toward the eyeward side and also to direct activation light to the dimming element, where the activation light is within the range of light wavelengths to activate a darkening of the photochromic material to dim the visible scene light.

An optical element may include two or more zones to perform functions in a head-mounted display (HMD) device. An optical component may include a first optical zone characterized by a first sag profile to correct a refractive error of an eye of a user and a second optical zone characterized by a second sag profile to redirect a path of an illumination light beam. A transition zone located between the first optical zone and the second optical zone may provide a smooth transition between the first optical zone and the second optical zone.

The disclosure includes near-eye optical elements configured to suppress stray infrared light. Infrared light sources illuminate an eyebox area. A combiner layer may receive reflected infrared light and direct the reflected infrared light to a camera.

A light source structure includes a vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) device having a top surface and at least one side surface substantially perpendicular to and adjoining the top surface. The VCSEL device is configurable to output directed emission of light through the top surface. The light source structure also includes a light barrier surrounding at least a top portion of the VCSEL device and separated from the at least one side surface. The light barrier is configured to receive spontaneous emission out of the VCSEL device through the at least one side surface.

An optical system includes a first optical element having at least a first optical surface and a second optical surface, the first optical surface is not parallel to the second optical surface. The optical system includes a plurality of optical elements positioned adjacent to the second optical surface of the first optical element. The respective optical element of the plurality of optical elements is configured to receive light transmitted through the first optical surface at a first angle with respect to the second optical surface and direct the light back toward the first optical surface at a second angle, that is distinct from the first angle, with respect to the second optical surface.

A retinal imaging system includes a projector, an imaging device, and a controller coupled to an eye tracking system under test. The projector emits a light pattern to be delivered to a pupil of an eye, a location of the pupil being estimated by the eye tracking system under test. The imaging device captures one or more images of a retina of the eye illuminated with at least a portion of the light pattern. The controller determines one or more eye tracking parameters based on the captured one or more images of the retina. The controller compares each determined eye tracking parameter with each of estimated one or more eye tracking parameters, wherein values for the one or more eye tracking parameters are estimated by the eye tracking system under test. The controller characterizes each estimated eye tracking parameter based on the comparison.

An eye is illuminated with infrared illumination light. Illuminating the eye includes illuminating a near-eye ellipsoidal lensing structure. A tracking image of Purkinje reflections of the infrared illumination light is captured by a camera. An eye position of the eye is determined in response to the tracking image.

An apparatus, system, and method for an imaging system that may be used to support eye tracking in a head mounted display. The imaging system may include an image sensor positioned in a user's field of view and within a lens assembly to capture light that is reflected from an eye. The imaging system may include two optical elements that are configured to at least partially direct scene light around the image sensor to conceal the image sensor from the user's eye. The image sensor is positioned between the two optical elements within the lens assembly.

A near-eye imaging system includes a light source, a waveguide, a scanner, and a sensor. The light source is configured to emit light. The waveguide includes an output coupler. The output coupler has negative optical power and is configured to direct the light to exit the waveguide as expanding illumination light toward an eyebox region. The sensor is configured to generate a tracking signal in response to returning light incident on the sensor via the scanner and via the output coupler.

The grating structure is configured to diffract a first light having an incidence angle within a predetermined range, and the at least one substrate is configured to reflect a second light. An eye-tracking method includes enabling at least one light source of an array of light sources to emit non-visible light to illuminate an eye. The method also includes obtaining at least one image of the eye while the at least one light source is enabled.
