A melt polymerization process for the preparation of poly(1,3-propylene-co-isosorbide) terephthalate (3GIT), new 3GITs and products made from the 3GITs. The process comprises (a) providing a mixture comprising terephthalic acid or its alkyl ester, 1,3-propanediol and isosorbide in a molar ratio of diols to terephthalic acid or its alkyl ester of from about 1.1:1 to about 1.6:1 and a molar ratio of 1,3-propanediol to isosorbide of from about 2:1 to about 10:1; (b) reacting the mixture in an inert atmosphere at a temperature of about 180 to about 245&#xb0; C., with concurrent removal of a distillate comprising at least 80% of the water or alkanol volatile reaction product, wherein the distillate contains less than about 5 weight % 1,3-propanediol and less than 1 weight % isosorbide; and (c) continuing the reaction in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst at a pressure of about 0.25 to about 2 mm Hg and about 245 to about 260&#xb0; C. to form a 3GIT containing about 4 to about 20 mole % isosorbide units, based on the 3GIT.

Poly(1,3-propylene-co-1,4:3,6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol terephthalate) and manufacturing process

A polymeric composition, a process for producing the composition, and a process for using the composition in, for example, hydrocyanation or isomerization are disclosed. The composition comprises repeat units derived from (1) a carbonyl compound, a monomer, and phosphorochloridite; (2) phosphorus trichloride, a polyhydric alcohol, and an aromatic diol; or (3) combinations of (1) and (2) in which the monomer can be a polyhydric alcohol, an amine, combinations thereof. The composition can further comprise a Group VIII metal and optionally a Lewis acid. The composition can be produced by (1) contacting a carbonyl compound with the monomer to produce an intermediate and contacting the intermediate with phosphorochloridite; (2) contacting phosphorus trichloride with a second polyhydric alcohol under a condition sufficient to produce a phosphorus-containing polymer and contacting the phosphorus-containing polymer with an aromatic diol; or (3) contacting an N,N-dialkyl dichlorophosphoramidite with a second polyhydric alcohol to produce a polymer phosphoramidite, contacting the polymer phosphoramidite with an acid such as HCl to produce the phospphorus-containing polymer, which is then contacted with an aromatic diol. The composition can be used as catalyst, for example, for converting an unsaturated organic compound to a nitrile and isomerizing a nitrile.

Polymeric phosphite composition and hydrocyanation of unsaturated organic compounds and the isomerization of unsaturated nitriles

A polymeric composition, a process for producing the composition, and a process for using the composition in, for example, hydrocyanation or isomerization are disclosed. The composition comprises repeat units derived from (1) a carbonyl compound, a monomer, and phosphorochloridite; (2) phosphorus trichloride, a polyhydric alcohol, and an aromatic diol; or (3) combinations of (1) and (2) in which the monomer can be a polyhydric alcohol, an amine, combinations thereof. The composition can further comprise a Group VIII metal and optionally a Lewis acid. The composition can be produced by (1) contacting a carbonyl compound with the monomer to produce an intermediate and contacting the intermediate with phosphorochloridite; (2) contacting phosphorus trichloride with a second polyhydric alcohol under a condition sufficient to produce a phosphorus-containing polymer and contacting the phosphorus-containing polymer with an aromatic diol; or (3) contacting an N,N-dialkyl dichlorophosphoramidite with a second polyhydric alcohol to produce a polymer phosphoramidite, contacting the polymer phosphoramidite with an acid such as HCl to produce the phosphorus-containing polymer, which is then contacted with an aromatic diol. The composition can be used as catalyst, for example, for converting an unsaturated organic compound to a nitrile and isomerizing a nitrile.

A process for melt spinning spandex, utilizing a polyurethaneurea polymer prepared from a purified capped glycol, linear aliphatic diamines and a monoamine chain terminator, is provided.

A thermoplastic, segmented, linear copolyetherester elastomer with soft segments derived from poly(alkylene oxide) glycol and hard segments of poly(1,2-ethylene terephthalate) or poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate) contains very small amounts of certain bifunctional units. Preferred units are derived from trans-1,4-cyclohexylene-bis-(N-trimellitimide) and p-phenylene-bis-(N-trimellitimide). Fibers of the elastomer have non-tacky characteristics and improved elastic properties.

Copolyetherester elastomer

A thermoplastic, segmented, copolyetherester elastomer having soft segments derived from poly(alkylene oxide) glycols and bibenzoic acid, and hard segments constituting 10-17 weight percent of the elastomer and being 95 to 100% poly(1,3-propylenebibenzoate). Melt-spun fibers of the elastomer have significantly superior elastic and set properties and are less stiff than similar elastomeric fibers having the same soft segments but with hard segments of poly(ethylenebibenzoate), poly(1,4-butylenebibenzoate) or poly(1,6-hexylenebibenzoate).

Copolyetherester elastomer with poly(1,3-propylenebibenzoate) hard

A segmented copolyetherester elastomer has soft segments formed from 60-95% poly(ethylene oxide) glycol and 40-45% of a second poly(alkylene oxide)glycol, preferably poly(tetramethylene oxide) glycol, and hard segments formed from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol or 1,4-butane diol, the hard segments amounting to 8-20% of the elastomer weight. The elastomer can be molded into soft, elastic objects and can absorb water amounting to at least 100% of its dry weight.

Water-swellable thermoplastic copolyetherester elastomer

A thermoplastic, segmented, linear copolyetherester elastomer of at least 70 weight percent soft segments, derived from poly(alkylene oxide) glycols and terephthalic acid, and hard segments constituting 10-30% of the elastomer and being 95 to 100% poly(1,3-propylene terephthalate). Melt-spun and drawn fibers of the elastomer have superior elastic and set properties versus comparable fibers made from such elastomers having hard segments of poly(ethylene terephthalate) or of poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate).

A segmented thermoplastic copolyetherester having soft segments formed from a long chain polyalkyleneether glycol containing 80 to 97 mole percent of copolymerized tetrahydrofuran and 3 to 20 mole percent of a copolymerized cyclic alkylene oxide, preferably copolymerized 3-methyltetrahydrofuran, provides fibers and films with an improved combination of high tenacity, high unload power, high melting temperatures and low set.
