An elevator system () load bearing assembly () includes a plurality of load bearing members (-). At least one of the load bearing members (-) has a load carrying capacity that is different than at least one other of the load bearing members (-). A disclosed example includes equal numbers of load bearing members () having a first load carrying capacity and equal numbers of load bearing members () having a second, different load carrying capacities. Another example includes at least three different load carrying capacities. With the disclosed examples, the aggregate load carrying capacity of an elevator load bearing assembly () can more closely meet the load carrying requirements for a given elevator system without over-roping the system.

An exemplary elevator door frame includes a sill member and a header member. A plurality of jamb members are generally perpendicular to the sill member and the header member. A plurality of guide rail brackets are supported on at least one of the sill member, the header member or one of the jamb members. The guide rail brackets are configured to receive a portion of a guide rail.

A device () for damping vibrations between a first component () and a second component () includes a receiving member () configured to be connected to the first component (), a first permanent magnet () arranged inside the receiving member (), a second permanent magnet () arranged inside the receiving member () in series with the first magnet (), and an engaging member () slidably connected to the receiving member () and including a first end configured to engage the second component () and a second end inside the receiving member () adjacent the first magnet (). The second magnet () includes a pole which repels a facing pole of the first magnet ().

An exemplary elevator system comprises a machine support () including a first portion () situated in a generally horizontal position at least partially within a hoistway (). A second portion () is oriented generally perpendicular to the first portion. The second portion has one end supported by a support surface () adjacent the hoistway such that a portion of a load of the machine support is transferred to the support surface. One end of the first portion () is supported by the second portion () and another end of the first portion is supported by a structural member at least partially in the hoistway such that a remainder of the load of the machine support is transferred to the structural member.

An example method of coating a surface includes rotating a sprayer about an axis and directing spray away from the axis using the sprayer. The method coats a surface with the spray. The method moves a fluid through apertures established in the surface to limit movement of spray into apertures. The apertures are configured to direct the fluid toward the axis.

Coating a perforated surface

An elevator machine () assembly useful in an elevator system () includes a motor frame () that supports a motor () for selectively rotating a motor shaft (). A brake () selectively applies a braking force to resist rotation of the motor shaft (). At least one load sensor () resists undesirable movement of the brake () and provides an indication of a load that results from applying the braking force. A disclosed example includes using a first resistive member () to resist movement of the brake () relative to the motor frame () when the load is below a threshold load and using a second resistive member () to resist movement when the load exceeds the threshold load.

An elevator () includes a sill () that extends out from underneath an elevator car () to bridge an operating gap () between the car () and a landing (). When an elevator door () is aligned with a landing door (), the sill () extends outwardly from the car () until the sill () makes contact with a landing structure (). A locking mechanism () securely locks the sill () to the landing structure (). In one example, once proper sill alignment and locking engagement occurs, a door moving mechanism () is released and the elevator () and landing () doors open.

A brake mechanism () for an elevator () is activated in response to an electronic control signal to prevent movement of an elevator car () under predetermined conditions. The brake mechanism is preferably a safety mechanism () and does not require a governor sheave, a governor rope, or a tension sheave. The safety mechanism in one disclosed example utilizes a solenoid actuator () and an electric motor () and gear box assembly () to move safety wedges () into engagement with a guide rail () to stop the elevator car (). The safety wedges () are held in a non-deployed position during normal elevator operation. If there is a power loss or if elevator car speed exceeds a predetermined threshold, an electronic control signal activates the safety mechanism () causing the solenoid to release, which causes the safety wedges () move in a direction opposite to that of a safety housing () mounted for movement with the elevator car (). Angled surfaces of the safety housing () force the safety wedges () into engagement with the guide rail (). The safety mechanism () can be selectively reset from a remote location.

Remotely resettable ropeless emergency stopping device for an elevator

A heads-up display for a vehicle is in contrast to the windshield behind the display or the environment outside the vehicle windshield. In this way, the heads-up display is more visible than prior art heads-up displays. In one embodiment, the windshield is tinted to be in contrast with the color of the heads-up display, at least over a small area. In other embodiments, the image forward of the vehicle is captured and sent to a control for the heads-up display. The heads-up display is then modified to be in contrast with the environment approaching the vehicle. In another embodiment, the window is modified to have a back glow over a small area. The heads-up display is directed onto this small area.

A gas turbine engine includes a variable area nozzle having a plurality of flaps. The flaps are actuated by a plurality of actuating mechanisms driven by shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators to vary fan exist nozzle area. The SMA actuator has a deformed shape in its martensitic state and a parent shape in its austenitic state. The SMA actuator is heated to transform from martensitic state to austenitic state generating a force output to actuate the flaps. The variable area nozzle also includes a plurality of return mechanisms deforming the SMA actuator when the SMA actuator is in its martensitic state.

A control switch assembly includes a variable and selectively activatable feedback unit. The feedback unit provides tactile feedback to a user of the system depending upon a particular adjustment to be made by manipulating the control switch. In the preferred embodiment, the feedback unit includes an electromagnetic arrangement that is selectively energized to provide tactile feedback under preselected conditions.

A window wiper system for an automotive vehicle has an electromagnetic device, a rotatable member and a window wiper oscillating mechanism. In another aspect of the present invention, the electromagnetic device is an electric motor which operates in a unidirectional manner to oscillate a window wiper assembly back and forth in a normal window wiping range. The electric motor and rotatable member then reverse rotational direction to move the wiper assembly to a park position offset from the normal window wiping range.

An acoustic jet disposed within an aerodynamic surface, such as a wing or a blade, has a resilient wall supporting a mass. Vibrations of the blade cause oscillatory pressure waves within the acoustic jet, the nozzle of which directs fluid particles having high momentum flux essentially tangentially into the boundary layer of the suction surface of the blade, the resonant cavity of the synthetic jet being replenished with particles having low momentum flux drawn from the flow in a direction normal to the surface, thereby to provide a net time averaged flow of fluid particles of increasing momentum flux into the boundary layer to defer or prevent the onset of boundary layer separation. Single and double chambers drive nozzles separated streamwise or spanwise on airfoils (blades, wings) and fuselages. Applications include helicopters, airplanes, air moving machines and wind energy electric power generators.
