A retaining system in which straps are provided with hooks that remain engaged with retaining loops even when tension on the straps is released and in which the tightening mechanism includes rods which are located partially below a rib surface on which the straps are placed such that the ends of the rods are near the plane of the strap ends, thereby greatly reducing the bending moment applied to the strap ends and threaded rods. The hook preferably includes a cavity opposite the hook end that will engage the retaining loop when no tension is on the line. In some embodiments, the hook includes a spring-loaded retaining clip to further ensure that the hook does not become disengaged from the retaining loop. The tightening mechanism includes two rods, each of which is positioned to one side of a rib on which the straps rest.

Tank retaining system

A storage tank includes a dome placed over an open end of a riser and secured to the riser by a fiberglass ring formed over a flanged end of the dome and a portion of the riser that is adjacent to the dome such that the interior of the tank may be pressurized to facilitate leak detection. A fillet of putty or other material that will not adhere or only weakly adhere to the riser and dome is placed over a horizontal surface of the flanged end. This arrangement allows the dome to be removed from the riser by simply grinding away a corner portion of the fiberglass ring at the bottom edge of the dome. The dome may then be reused for other tanks. In another embodiment, a domed cover is formed on an interior of the riser. The domed cover preferably includes a flat outside edge which is permanently attached to the inside wall of the riser. After the tank has been installed and tested, the domed portion is cut away, leaving the flat edge attached to the interior wall of the riser. The flat edge then serves as a flange for supporting a required pump, filter or other device.

Method and apparatus for pressure testing storage tanks

A rib suitable for use with a storage tank has a &ldquo;Y&rdquo; cross sectional shape including a trunk section and branches. Each of the branches includes a substantially flat upper surface for positioning adjacent to a tank wall. The branches together with the tank wall define an annular space which may be used as part of an annular space in a multiple wall tank. The rib preferably includes a high modulus material such as graphite or steel. The high modulus material may be present in the trunk, branches, or both.

High strength rib for storage tanks

An underground storage tank includes an outer wall having integrally formed ribs, the ribs being closed off by a layer of material applied directly over the space defined created by the ribs and attached to the outer wall, a layer of plastic film or other annular material through which liquid may flow placed over portions of the outer wall between the ribs and extending past the shoulders of the ribs but not extending completely over the material covering the opening of the rib, and an inner wall formed over the annular material and attached to the portion of the material covering the opening provided by the rib that is not covered by the annular material. In this way, the inner wall is tied and preferably chemically and mechanically bonded to the outer wall through the material covering the opening of the rib.

Double walled underground storage tank and method for making the same

In a method and apparatus for detecting leaks in riser and lid assemblies, a difference in pressure between the inside of the riser and cover assembly and the outside is created and monitored to insure that no leaks exist. Preferably, a vacuum is created on the inside of the riser and cover assembly. This vacuum is then monitored for a set period of time to insure that the total change in pressure does not exceed a threshold. In a highly preferred embodiment, an apparatus automatically creates the desired vacuum and then isolates a vacuum gauge to monitor the vacuum in the riser. Method for isolating a leak are also presented in the event that a leak is detected.

Method and apparatus for vacuum testing water resistant and watertight risers and lids

A double walled storage tank includes an outer wall, an inner wall, a plurality of ribs disposed between the inner and outer walls, and a plurality of annular spaces between the ribs. The annular space between each pair of ribs is connected to other annular spaces only at the top of the tank. When a leak occurs in either the outer or inner wall, the annular space corresponding to the leak will at least partially drain while the other annular spaces will remain full. Thus, the leak location can be determined by simply examining the annular spaces between pairs of ribs.

System and method for detecting leaks in underground storage tank

A telescoping and rolling cover assembly for a barge includes a plurality of cover sections that travel along a track or tracks provided on the barge coaming. The cover sections may be provided with anti-derailment clamps that engage a vertical lip of the barge coaming to prevent the covers from being pulled off the track. The clamps may further be provided with wind latch extensions that secure the cover sections when in a stacked position. The cover sections may be provided with a stacking shelf that provides a surface on which an overlying stacked cover may rest. The cover sections may travel along one or more tracks provided on the sides of the barge coaming. A portion of some cover sections may travel along tracks attached to underlying cover sections. The cover assembly may be made of fiber reinforced plastic.

Telescoping and rolling cover assembly for a barge

The present invention relates to a method of upgrading a tank or a method which involves the assembly of an inner tank within an existing outer tank. In the method of the present invention, rolled panel sections are inserted through a hole of an existing outer tank. The rolled panel sections are adjacently positioned within the existing outer tank and expanded so as to conform to the shape of the existing outer tank. End cap sections either flat or domed depending on the shape of the outer tank are also installed through the hole. All of the seams (axial and transverse) are sealed so as to provide for an inner tank within the outer tank that can rate as a stand-alone tank. Circumferential ribs are installed and attached along a length of the inner tank so as to provide for a structural rigidity of the inner tank. With the method of the present invention it is not necessary to completely replace an existing tank and at the same time, if the outer tank has structural weaknesses, the tank can be strengthened by the formation of the inner tank utilizing the method of the present invention.

Tank upgrading method and tank assembly

A lift-off cover assembly for barges includes adjacently positioned curved cover sections and end cover sections located at opposite ends of the adjacently positioned curved cover sections. The cover assembly includes a central walkway which extends between openings on the cover assembly and climbing stairs which are positioned so as to facilitate the travel of a cargo loading operated toward the openings. Additionally, each of openings can include cover members such as lids or doors which have handles or latches that are accessible from the central walkway.

Lift-off cover assembly for a barge

A lift-off cover assembly for barges includes adjacently positioned curved cover sections and end cover sections located at opposite ends of the adjacently positioned curved cover sections. The cover assembly includes a central walkway which extends between openings on the cover assembly and climbing stairs which are positioned so as to facilitate the travel of a cargo loading operated toward the openings. Additionally, each of openings can include cover members such as lids or doors which have handles or latches that are accessible from the central walkway. The cover assembly also includes weather seals that allow the placement of covers in different relative locations for use with barges having different dimensions.

A reversible latching hinge for the roof of a container such as a railway car which is adapted to be inverted to a discharging position. The latching hinge allows the roof to pivot away automatically from the opening of the container during inversion. The reversible latching hinge is designed so as to minimize or eliminate undesirable impact loading that may arise from lateral displacement of the roof during inversion. The construction includes flanges extending laterally outward from the roof and terminating in ears which extend toward latch bars mounted to the container. Contact between the ears and the latch bars forms a pivot point for the roof. The construction also includes freely pivoting hooks which, on the upper side of the roof engage the latch bars to prevent the roof from falling off of the container. The hooks on the lower side disengage from the latch bars by gravity to permit the roof to swing outwardly during inversion.

Reversible latching hinge

An oceangoing barge cover is provided, which is made from lightweight structural fabric but enjoys the strength and stiffness of heavier steel covers and meets the requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping. The cover is comprised of a series of units, each of which in crosssection, is in the form of a series of concave quaternary curves, to the underside of which are fixed structural beams of fiberglass encasing rebar for support. Further support is provided by pipes of a structural fabric running perpendicular to the structural beams. A hatch can be optionally provided. Weathersealing and barge affixing means are also disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the structural elements of the cover are comprised of fiberglass or fiberglass laminate.
