An exemplary method of facilitating hand-offs between Femtocells includes receiving an indication of a cell identifying code detected by a mobile station currently communicating with a serving Femtocell. A determination is made whether the received cell identifying code corresponds to a known Femtocell. The known Femtocell becomes a target Femtocell if a successful hand-off was previously made from the serving Femtocell to the known Femtocell. A hand-off is instigated to the target Femtocell.

Example embodiments provide a method and/or network element capable of mitigating one or more effects of operating at full capacity. According to an example embodiment, a network element may address load capacity by identifying that a first network element (e.g., a femto) is operating at a threshold capacity. If a communication from a second network element intended for the first network element is received, an operation is performed that informs the second network element of at least one of (i) that the first network element is operating at a threshold capacity and (ii) that the communication cannot be delivered to the first network element while the first network element is operating at a threshold capacity.

Methods for capacity limitation mitigation in a radio frequency device

The present invention provides a method involving a femtocell in communication with an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network. In one embodiment, the femtocell operates according to code division multiple access (CDMA) standards. The method includes receiving, from the femtocell and at a first secure entity in the IMS network, first authentication information generated by the mobile unit using a first random number broadcast by the femtocell in a global challenge. The method also includes receiving, from a second secure entity in the secure network, at least one security key formed based on the global challenge and second authentication information for uniquely challenging the mobile unit. In one embodiment, the second secure entity is a CDMA-based authentication server. The method further includes providing the security key(s) to the femtocell in response to authenticating the mobile unit based upon the second authentication information.

Method for authenticating a mobile unit attached to a femtocell that operates according to code division multiple access

A method for wireless communications with mobile stations located within a femtocell is described. The method includes registering a femtocell with an IMS core network to receive IMS services for one or more mobile stations located within the femtocell, and separately registering the mobile station with an application server to provide additional services to the mobile station located within the femtocell. The additional services may be CDMA services. Also, registering the femtocell with the IMS core network may include transmitting femtocell registration information that does not include information regarding the mobile station to the IMS core network to request IMS services for the mobile station.

Methods for provisioning mobile stations and wireless communications with mobile stations located within femtocells

The present invention provides a method involving a femtocell in communication with a secure core network such as an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network. The method includes receiving, from the femtocell and at a first secure entity in the IMS network, a global challenge including information indicating a random number. The method also includes receiving an authentication response computed by a mobile unit based on the random number and the first key known by the mobile unit and not known by the femtocell. The method further includes determining, at the first secure entity, that the random number is a legitimate random number provided to the femtocell by the IMS network.

Method for authenticating mobile units attached to a femtocell that operates according to code division multiple access

A method for hand-off of a CDMA access mobile from a macrocell to a femtocell is disclosed. The method includes tracking each femtocell which mobile stations have allowed access incorporating a mobile station identification for each of the mobile stations. The method continues with storing the mobile station identification for each femtocell. This may occur in a database or similar structure. The message continues on with requesting a hand-off from the macrocell to the femtocell via PN offset and the method concludes with querying all femtocells that have that PN offset that are within range of the macrocell's neighbor list. If only one femtocell fits that criteria the method is done. If more than one femtocell fits that criteria, a priority list may be set up based at least in part on the number of times and/or frequency that the mobile station has been allowed access on the femtocell. The method could include allocating resources for all high priority femtocells and cleaning up resources for the femtocells that do not send a hand-off complete message.

Method and apparatus to allow hand-off from a macrocell to a femtocell

A method for provisioning, registering and authenticating a mobile phone on a basestation is provided. The method includes receiving an addition request for the addition of a mobile station to a basestation authorization record via an interface. The method continues with creating an entry for the mobile station, where the entry includes mobile station information, and receiving a registration request including request information from the mobile station to register to receive basestation based services via the associated internet multimedia subsystem network. The method also includes authorizing registration on the IMS network based at least in part on the request information.

The dual registration system tracks two serving Mobile Switching Centers for each subscriber. The registrations are differentiated as IP Multimedia Subsystem for voice call delivery purposes and CDMA Mobile Switching Center for IP access and other non-voice services. The apparatus, method and system embodiments of the present invention provide for maintaining call control at a gateway mobile switching center (MSC), for roaming mobile units, utilizing a packet network or link, such as an ATM link. The preferred system embodiment includes a gateway MSC, a serving MSC, and a base station having a wireless link with the roaming mobile unit. The gateway MSC includes a protocol handler for voice (PHV). For any given incoming call for the roaming mobile unit or outgoing call from the roaming mobile unit, the gateway MSC designates a specific address (or channel) on the PHV, referred to as a data link connection identifier (DLCI), for use as an address for voice packets to be received from the roaming mobile unit via the base station and serving MSC, and the base station also provides a base station packet address to the gateway MSC, for use as an address for voice packets to be received from the gateway MSC (through the serving MSC) for the roaming mobile unit, thereby creating a full duplex packet link. The packet link serves as a voice path between the base station, the serving MSC, and gateway MSC, with all communication to and from the roaming mobile unit routed through the gateway MSC. The gateway MSC thereby maintains all call control for the roaming mobile unit for the implementation of advanced calling features, such as call waiting and three-way calling. In the preferred embodiment, the DLCI is included as a new parameter for ANSI-41 compatible messages. In addition, new ANSI-41 compatible messages are also utilized, a Gateway Origination Request containing the base station packet address and a Gateway Origination Request Return Result containing the new DLCI parameter.

Apparatus, method and system for maintaining call control at a gateway mobile switching center utilizing a packet network

Apparatus and a method for providing, to a service provider, telemetry access to customer equipment. The telemetry access is provided using wireless access means to avoid having to provide special residential wiring to connect to meters and control devices at customer premises. Each customer device is provided with a cellular station having its own mobile identity, either an international mobile switching identifier (IMSI) or a mobile identity number (MIN). Each IMSI or MIN need not be associated with a different telephone number. For example, a single telephone number can be assigned to a service provider to access all devices telemetered by that service provided. Advantageously, this arrangement provides for an inexpensive method and apparatus for accessing customer devices.

Audible ring, which is provided to all line appearances, is detected and used to determine whether or not a far end party has answered, i.e., answer supervision, for equipment connected to the line appearance which requires answer supervision for proper operation. The line appearance is monitored to detect ringing tone received at the line appearance within a first period of time from call origination. If ringing tone is not detected at the line appearance within the first period of time, receipt of answer supervision is indicated. If ringing tone is detected at the line appearance within the first period of time, the timing for the first period of time is canceled and timing for a second period of time is started from the cancellation of timing for the first time period. The timing for the second period of time is restarted each time ringing tone is detected at the line appearance during the second period of time with receipt of answer supervision being indicated if ringing tone is not detected within the second period of time.

Method of determining answer supervision at a line appearance of a public switch telephone network

This invention provides a method and apparatus for associating call data with particular users instead of line ports. This call data includes the last incoming and outgoing calls associated with a particular number. This allows the services such as automatic callback, automatic recall, and customer originated trace to be implemented with dynamic line assignment allowing users to maintain the same level of subscribed services at different locations. For mobile users, automatic callback, automatic recall, and customer originated trace can be implemented at the home mobile switching center as well as roaming mobile switching centers. If the mobile user is roaming, updating the call history of the mobile station at the new mobile switching center allows the mobile user to experience seamless services across a large territory.
