Validation of the identity of the user is performed with the use of a card associated with intelligence that identifies the user. Validation of the document involves one or more of: validating the presence of a signature; validating the amount of the monetary transaction document including a manual entry of the amount by the user; validating CAR against the LAR; and validating the banking system parameters and rules for the customer and/or the transaction. To assist in the automatic analysis of data on monetary transactional documents or on remittance documents, the user is prompted to provide a bounding box about the data. An image touch screen may be touched by the user to locate the bounding box and the user may magnify the data to fill the boundary box to exclude other data from analysis. After document and person validation, the system will dispense money or transfer monies to a savings account, a checking account, a smart card, or the like. The system will also write money orders or wire transfer money.

An automated document cashing system is provided with an automated machine that cashes monetary transaction documents such as checks, money orders, and that makes deposit entries into the bank account of the user after validation of the user and monetary transaction document, without the aid of a bank teller. A biometric device also may be used in identifying the validity of the user. An automated banking system for wire transfer of funds is provided with a machine where the user has a card to identify the user as being qualified to use the banking system. The user must know and be provided with the transferee's bank number and the transferee's account number. Preferably, the user knows the routing number and the user inputs the routing number at the machine which is preferably an ATM machine that accepts and dispenses cash. The user may pay for the wire transfer at the machine by cash, a credit card, debit card, smart card or a withdrawal from the user's account. The machine has card readers and means for writing down on a card the amount paid therefrom for this wire transaction. The user is assured by the verification that the wire transfer is to the proper receiving account.

An unattended banking machine such as an ATM machine has a payment acceptor for accepting payment from the machine user and for determining the amount of payment from the user. A calculator determines the transactional difference between the amount of the transaction and the payment by the user. In ATM machines service fees may be charged to the ATM user for issuing a money order or for a wire transfer that are not in even multiples of the smallest denomination of the currency being dispensed by the ATM machine. The preferred cash dispenser has only bills of different denominations and no coins. To pay the transactional difference without the use of very small denomination currency and/or coins the transactional difference is divided into a cash payment portion which is dispensed in bills from the machine's cash dispenser. The remainder of the transactional payment is paid electronically to the ATM user either on a card, such as a smart card, or into the user's ATM account as an electronic remainder payment portion. The ATM machine includes a card reader and card writer to add the electronic payment portion to the balance on the card. The ATM machine may perform a number of other transactions such as cashing a check, paying a bill, and purchasing an item.

The image capture apparatus also can capture an image of a utility bill or the like that is presented by a user. By supplying monies in the form of cash, credit card authorization, smart card balance, or the like, the user can pay bills such as a utility bill through the system or purchase items dispensed by the system.
