An underground storage tank for the containment of liquids such as gasoline or water is comprised of a cylindrical body with ribs provided about the circumference of the body. The ribs have a cross-section in the nature of a rectangular sine wave. By providing lower ribs, no greater than one half-inch in height above the surface of the cylindrical body, and as much as five or six inches in breath, strength is maintained with a reduction in the amount of material used. The rib may be strengthened against crushing forces by providing linear material of high modulus, such as graphite or carbon fiber, in the upper portion of the rib. The resulting tank can be built to take advantage or recent changes in transportation regulations and may extend up to eight and one half feet, providing for more economical tank manufacture from source to installation.

The plurality of furniture members may comprise: a front member; opposing side furniture members; and a back furniture member.

System and method for modular furniture assembly

A triple-walled underground storage tank is provided with primary, secondary and tertiary walls. Between each two adjacent walls, an annular space is provided. The annular space is continuous throughout, and permits the flow of liquid therein. Monitors may be provided separately for each annulus, to detect the formation of leaks, or a lack of containment, in either wall defining the annular space. In one embodiment, the tertiary wall is a smooth cylinder formed about the circumferential ribs of the secondary wall. In the alternative embodiment, the rib-bearing wall is the tertiary wall, and the walls and annular materials of the tank are formed within a female mold. In either case, a tank prepared from integral ribs, with superior robustness and strength, is provided with triple containment.

Triple walled underground storage tank

A water-tight fiberglass septic tank is strong enough to withstand live loads. The fiberglass septic tank is preferably designed with integral ribs to for structural strength. In one preferred embodiment, the tank is made in two unequal halves. The lower half comprises the major portion of the tank and includes a bottom, two endwalls and two sidewalls. The upper half comprises a cover. This arrangement allows the horizontal seam to be placed above the internal waterline, thereby protecting the seam from exposure to sewage. At least one of the endwalls includes a raised top portion that allows a pipe to be located near the top of the lower portion without passing through the seam between the upper and lower portions of the tank. The endwalls are also curved to allow for angled inlet and outlet pipe connections. The ribs are preferably internal and hollow. The lower portion of the tank is also preferably flat bottomed. A provision has been made for a self-locating baffle if required. In another preferred embodiment, a cylindrical male molded tank is created on a mandrel. The tank circumference is stepped, which both provides for built-in stepped ribs and eases removal of the tank from the mandrel. In preferred embodiments of the tank, a baffle is located at the position of a stepped rib so that the stepped rib supports the baffle.

A barge cover assembly includes at least one first cover section and at least one end cover section. The first cover section includes a stairway that is within a rib profile. The first cover section also includes a door that protrudes only slightly above an upper surface such that the door is not impacted when cover sections are stacked. The door opening is approximately four feet by eight feet such that a standard-sized sheet of a material such as plywood can be used to cover the door opening in the event that a door has been removed from the cover section. The end cover section has an end with a stepped rib/valley structure wherein successive ribs and valleys form steps of the stairway.

A method for calculating underground storage tank (UST) buoyancy and buoyancy safety factors defines boundaries of side areas such that the boundaries do not overlap for multiple tank installations. Installation plan information may be input over a medium such as the Internet. The computer calculates the buoyancy and buoyancy safety factor and returns this information to the requesting party over the same medium. This technique allows installers to verify the adequacy of installation plans quickly. Records of the information provided by the installer may be kept so the recipient of the information (typically the UST manufacturer) can reconcile differences between the actual installation and the installation plan in the event of UST flotation. The information may be provided on a paper form supplied by the installer. In preferred embodiments, the calculations are tailored to installation guidelines (often provided by the UST manufacturer), which may specify such parameters as spacing between tanks in multi-tank installations, some or all deadman dimensions, slab dimensions, etc. Preferred embodiments generate a form letter that includes the installation plan information and the results of the buoyancy and/or buoyancy safety factor calculations.

A method for modeling the behavior of an underground structure such as an underground storage tank under seismic loads includes the steps of constructing separate finite element models for the ribs, tank and fill material. The fill material model comprises a plurality of three-dimensional solid &ldquo;brick&rdquo; elements. The tank model comprises a plurality of three dimensional plate/shell elements. The rib model comprises a plurality of beam elements. The nodal points for the beam elements correspond to nodes defining one edge of the tank shell. The tank/rib model is preferably joined to the soil model through a plurality of radial link elements between the brick and shell elements. Spring elements may also be added for stability. A dynamic vertical or horizontal forcing function from an earth quake is then applied to the model. Stress and/or displacement results from horizontal and vertical forcing functions may then be combined if desired. The forcing functions are preferably taken from an actual earthquake, although simulated forcing functions may also be used.

Residential septic tank

An underground storage tank having a shape approximating a traditional bread loaf. A dome-shaped top extends vertically downward in integral common lateral sides, which terminate in an integral flat bottom.

A female-molded double-walled underground storage tank is provided with an annulus of reduced thickness, defined by a plastic film. The film separates the inner and outer walls of the tank, providing an annulus which can be monitored to monitor the tank for failure of either the inner or the outer tank, before contamination of the exterior environment. The tank is formed of fiberglass reinforced plastic, the inner and outer walls thereof being tied together by fiberglass reinforced plastic which holds the annular film in place. The domes of the outer and inner shell are separated due to a layer of wax and alcohol applied to the inner surface of the dome of the exterior tank prior to formation of the interior tank. The spaces between the flats of the two tanks, the domes of the two tanks, and the interior of the ribs of the exterior tank are placed in fluid communication by gutters running along the length of the tank.

Female-molded underground storage tank and method of making

An underground storage tank provided with a manway is equipped with a riser extending from the storage tank, about the manway, to a point just below the access way provided in the ground level of the installation. The riser is provided with a water-tight cover which is released through operation of a cam. The water-tight riser excludes water from the interior of the riser and the manway, ensuring access to the manway, operation of the fittings provided in the manway, an additional containment of fluid passing through the manway and the area of the tank adjacent thereto. Because it is water-tight, an alarm sensitive to liquid may be placed in the interior of the riser to alert the operator to the possible loss of containment, or loss of water-tight sealing between the cover and the riser.

A system for the storage and dispensing of liquid product from an underground installation comprises a storage tank which bears on its top a containment chamber enclosing all fittings for apparatus which gasoline or other stored product will pass through under pressure. Attached to at least one fitting each are a fill arrangement for introducing liquid to the storage tank, and a pump for pumping fluid therefrom, both of which are entirely enclosed in secondary containment, the storage tank itself and piping also being enclosed in secondary containment, such that the system is pressure tight, and recovers all leaked fluid in a state in which the fluid can be reused.

An underground storage tank is provided with a load-transmitting material in the annular space between inner and outer walls. The load-transmitting material passes aqueous liquid and the stored product and so may be used with either wet or dry alarm systems.

Double walled underground storage tank

Domes for enclosing human habitations are prepared from graphite-reinforced composite trusses and panels of clear plastic. The domes are provided on the exterior with a plurality of horizontally disposed, circumferentially extending ribs, to reduce lift and draft coefficients.
