Compositions and methods are for disclosed for treating a skin condition that results from reactive oxygen species production in skin of a subject, including applying a topical formulation that contains a lipophilic cation-mitochondrially targeted antioxidant compound and that delivers a therapeutically effective amount of the antioxidant compound to skin fibroblasts and keratinocytes.

Compositions and methods for skin care

This invention relates to pharmaceutically acceptable amphiphilic antioxidant compounds, compositions and dosage forms comprising said compounds, and methods and uses reliant on said compounds. The exemplified compounds are all mitoquinone derivatives, being methoxyphenyl alkyl triphenylphosphonium or methoxy dioxocyclohexadiene alkyl triphenylphosphonium derivatives. The compounds, compositions, dosage forms, uses and methods are useful in, for example, the treatment of diseases or conditions associated with oxidative stress.

Mitoquinone derivatives used as mitochondrially targeted antioxidants

The invention provides mitochondrially targeted antioxidant compounds. A compound of the invention comprises a lipophilic cation covalently coupled to an antioxidant moiety. In preferred embodiments, the lipophilic cation is the triphenyl phosphonium cation, and the compound is of the formula P(Ph)XR.Zwhere X is a linking group, Z is an anion and R is an antioxidant moiety. Also provided are pharmaceutical compositions containing the mitochondrially targeted antioxidant compounds, and methods of therapy or prophylaxis of patients who would benefit from reduced oxidative stress, which comprise the step of administering the compounds of the invention.

Mitochondrially targeted antioxidants

The invention provides mitochondrially targeted antioxidant compounds comprising a lipophilic cation moiety covalently coupled to a glutathione peroxidase mimetic. These compounds can be used to treat patients who would benefit from the reduction of oxidative stress.

The invention provides mitochondrially targeted antioxidant compounds comprising a lipophilic cation moiety covalently coupled to an antioxidant moiety which is either a superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic or a glutathione peroxidase mimetic. These compounds can be used to treat patients who would benefit from the reduction of oxidative stress.

The invention provides mitochondrially targeted antioxidant compounds. A compound of the invention comprises a lipophilic cation covalently coupled to an antioxidant moiety.
